20.01.2022 Live Exporters and cattle suppliers want reduced stocking densities on vessels due to start in November shelved, given the increased trade importance for Australia's economy and food security sensitivity in key markets. They say canning the new Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL) regulations will not be to the detriment of animal welfare given the changes have already been delayed for a year and exporter performance has not declined in its absence. The new requirements, recommended as part of a standard five-year review, will reduce exporter margins, the price that can be paid for live export stock, and the profitability of importers, Australian Livestock Exporters' Council chief executive officer Mark Harvey-Sutton said. #liveexport #globalleaders #cattle #foodsecurity #globalpartners #wholeofsupplychain
17.01.2022 The Indonesia-Australia Red Meat and Cattle Partnership have warned the introduction of new stocking density shipping regulations may partially offset the benefits of tariff reductions for Australian cattle that have come into force this year. The new regulations, due to start next month, mean between seven and 15 percent less stock on voyages. The report says the Indonesian industry adds approximately $550 per head of imported Australian cattle, through fattening and process...ing, which equates to $370 million to the Indonesian economy, and employs over 100,000 Indonesians in the feed, logistics, fattening, processing, and selling sectors. 16.01.2022 The role of mining, resources and agricultural industries were significant contributors with cattle tonnages by weight up 32 per cent on the year prior, making the Port of Townsville Australia's largest live cattle export port. "This has been a year unlike any other, but it was a testament to our employees, customers and supply chain partners who worked together to keep the economy moving and keep people in jobs,'' Port of Townsville CEO Ranee Crosby said. "The Port of Townsville's growth is crucial to the economy, jobs and the future of North Queensland.'' A record 388,296 head passed through the port, surpassing the previous highest export record of 305,778 in 2014/15. #liveexport #economy #wholeofsupplychain #domestic #international https://www.northqueenslandregister.com.au//agriculture-a/
14.01.2022 In an address that painted a picture of immense opportunity ahead for red meat producers and the supply chains that deliver beef, sheepmeat, and goatmeat to plates around the world, Meat & Livestock Australia's Managing Director Jason Strong made the case that realising that potential would hinge on unity. Mr Strong also touched on the value of the livestock export sector, a part of the business he has been particularly passionate about advocating on behalf of since stepping ...into the role of leading MLA early last year. If counted as a single market, live export would be the industry's fourth largest export market, he pointed out. It is worth $1.8 billion a year and represents 10pc of the industry's export sales. "The live export trade is incredibly valuable for our industry and has played a vital role in opening markets that have grown to become significant for Australian boxed beef, such as Korea," Mr Strong said. #liveexport #wholeofsupplychain #redmeat #foodsecurity #value See more

12.01.2022 - ? With dry conditions easing and increased access to stock feed, many producers are deciding t...o purchase livestock. It is essential to manage livestock during transport to reduce stress and minimise risks to animal welfare. Producers have an important role in ensuring they comply with the Animal Welfare Standards and guidelines for the land transport of livestock, along with any state based legislation. Here are our top tips for ensuring livestock are 'fit to load': 1. Don't transport sick, injured or heavily pregnant animals 2. Use low-stress handling techniques when loading and unloading stock 3. Don't conduct highly stressful activities such as crutching, dipping or drenching prior to loading 4. Make sure all movement documents travelling with the livestock are completed, including National Sheep/Cattle Animal Health Declarations. 12.01.2022 "After months of speculation about whether the event would go ahead as planned, it was confirmed this morning that Beef 2021 in Rockhampton is good to go. COVID-19 lockdowns and travel restrictions since April have created understandable doubts about the event’s prospects next year, but organisers have given the green light to proceed, with a few qualifiers attached. Beef Australia is the nation’s largest, most comprehensive, and most influential beef industry event, covering... the entire supply chain from conception to consumption. The program includes a vast conference and seminar program on a range of topics, the nation’s largest stud cattle exhibition, commercial cattle competitions, and displays, led steer competition, enormous commercial trade displays, property tours in surrounding cattle regions, dinners, and social gatherings. Food is another highlight, with pop-up restaurants, innovative food outlets, celebrity chefs, and cooking displays throughout the week." #Beef2021 #wholeofsupplychain #attend #exhibit #rockhampton See more

10.01.2022 Community attitude research shows a large section of Australians either doesn't have strong views one way or another on the livestock export industry or have gaps in their knowledge. The findings from the scientifically-designed study are in stark contrast to much-touted polls and claims by agenda groups that the vast majority of Australians want the trade banned. What the results highlight is the opportunity to help people understand the trade and allow them to make informed judgments, and this is backed by the data science company that conducted the research Voconiq. #liveexport #research #globalfoodsecurity #education #transparency The Livestock Collective Young Livestock Exporters Network Meat & Livestock Australia National Farmers' Federation

09.01.2022 After a handful of documentaries in recent years decrying meat production on environmental, human health, and animal welfare grounds, along comes one that powerfully not only dismantles the arguments against meat but explains why animal agriculture is essential to human lives and the planet. We’re trying to blame meat for the modern illnesses of obesity and diabetes and cancer and heart disease, US public health obesity researcher Dr Zoe Hurcombe says in the soon to be released film Sacred Cow: The Nutritional, Environmental and Ethical Case for Better Meat. It is far more likely that modern food is responsible for modern illness, not a substance that we have been eating for 3.5 million years. #foodsecurity #wholeofsupplychain #nutritional #environmental #ethical #redmeat
08.01.2022 Australia exports one million head of sheep per year, plus 20 million sale yard transactions. This highly skilled yet laborious task of counting is naturally susceptible to human error. On average the human count is 95% accurate, a discrepancy that presents a potential margin of $960,000 for Australia’s live sheep export industry and $12 million for sale yards per year. Meat & Livestock Australia, LiveCorp, and a team of University of Technology Sydney (UTS) researchers have ...developed a new cost-effective video-based counting solution in partnership, that’s recently been trialled on sheep in Fremantle’s port in Western Australia. The automated artificial intelligence technology was able to successfully differentiate between sheep, humans, and dogs in different environments in its initial trials with a 99.5% accuracy rate. #liveexport #sheep #researchdevelopment #globalleaders #wholeofsupplychain See more

06.01.2022 When Don Mackay reflects on his time as Independent Chair of the Red Meat Advisory Council (RMAC), he is proud of the industry working together to tackle the big challenges that could impact its long-term viability and prosperity. Mr Mackay says the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework is even more important now than when RMAC started those conversations. "It gets more important every day as the industry faces increasing scrutiny," he said. He says as well as protecting t...he industry's social licence and access to markets and capital, demonstrating continuous improvement can also avoid undue regulation on industry. "The last thing the industry wants is regulation, and I've found in my years representing industry, including as RMAC chair, where you go to government with a solution, it means they don't have to come in over the top and regulate." #liveexport #wholeofsupplychain #sustainability #foodsecurity See more
03.01.2022 Kimberley Pilbara Cattlemen's Association chief executive officer Emma White said exports from the Broome port in 2019 "was a record year, given the high turnoff rate due to the failed wet season/ongoing dry seasonal conditions". "For 2020, we are tracking fairly similarly to 2018 at this stage and averaging three vessels a month, mainly to Indonesia," Ms White said. The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) said in its Beef and Veal: June Quarter 2020 r...eport that the volume of live feeder and slaughter cattle exports reached record levels in the first nine months of 2019-20, increasing by 13 percent compared with the same period in 2018-19. Cattle exports from Western Australia have been strong so far this year - with 163,332 head of breeder, feeder and slaughter cattle being shipped to markets around the world from January 1 to August 31. The figure is impressive considering that Australia has the highest price in the world for cattle - topping the United States in recent weeks. #liveexport #cattle #foodsecurity #globalpartners #wholeofsupplychain See more

03.01.2022 Cattle exports from Western Australia have continued to be strong this year with a total of 213,479 head exported from Western Australian ports from January 1 to October 31, representing almost a quarter of the Australian trade. October saw the highest monthly total for the year with 32,615 head sent to various trading markets as the season winds up in the North West. Three vessels left Broome with 1992 breeder cattle and 1038 feeder cattle to Vietnam and 10,159 head of feeders to Indonesia. Fremantle was also busy with four vessels taking 2311 slaughter cattle to Vietnam, 3498 to China, 2339 to Malaysia and 5574 feeder cattle to Israel. #liveexport #cattle #foodsecurity #globalpartners #wholeofsupplychain
03.01.2022 "The reality is, when we need meat, we kill a sheep and that is one source of protein we consume and the sheep on the voyage to another part of the world are making it there safer now because the Middle East also needs a diet of meat and Australia can meet that demand. As for the surviving sheep that reach the destination, as producers we know the final outcome, the reality, they kill a sheep for meat just like us, they feed their families or they sell the meat as "their" commodity to make a living. There are no secrets, there are no videos, there is nothing to tell." 01.01.2022 The Young Livestock Exporters Network (YLEN) has held its first annual general meeting, with a new executive team elected to build on the strong groundwork of the foundation committee which was established last year. The new committee will be led by Kari Moffat as YLEN chair with Patrick Coole as vice-chair, Ryan Olive treasurer, and Camille Camp as secretary. Outgoing chair John Cunnington recognised the achievements of YLEN since its inception and encouraged the incoming ex...ecutive to continue to build networks among members and to enhance the capacity of young industry stakeholders who represent the future of the industry. By collaborating throughout the network, members gain a better understanding of the supply chain which ultimately strengthens the industry, Mr Cunnington said. I commend the work of the outgoing executive committee and am proud of what we have achieved together. #liveexport #YLEN #leadership #future #foodsecurity
01.01.2022 Mr Mark Davie has been appointed to the Australian Beef Sustainability Steering Group. Mr Davie said the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework provides the industry with the opportunity to measure and tell its sustainable production story to the world. I’m in the fortunate position of waking every morning in an Australian beef sustainability story and seeing the beauty of our biodiverse production system every day, he said. The Australian Beef Sustainability Framework de...fines sustainable beef production and tracks performance over a series of indicators each year. It is used by industry to strengthen its social licence and access to markets and capital. It does this by defining sustainable production under the themes of animal welfare, economic resilience, environmental stewardship, and people and the community. #wholeofsupplychain #liveexport #foodsecurity #globalmarkets #sustainability
01.01.2022 "The livestock exports sector plays a vital role in underpinning the price of Australian red meat sales and has a strategic role in key food security needs of our trading partners. The global pandemic has proven our industry to be resilient, demand from international markets has been strong and we’ve continued to trade, which has built trust. There’s real capacity for growth. But that’s not to say there hasn’t been challenges."
