19.01.2022 Hortidaily reports that "From 1 January 2020, businesses in Australia’s horticulture industry will be able to apply for the new Horticulture Industry Labour Agreement. The Horticulture Industry Labour Agreement increases access to skilled and semi-skilled migrant workers for the horticulture industry, where appropriately qualified Australians are unavailable." The agreement allows employers to sponsor overseas workers for the subclass 482 visa, Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa program and the Employer Nomination Scheme visa program, and enables access to a number of concessions to standard skilled visa requirements.

18.01.2022 The Government has announced further information on the Global Talent Program that was launched on the 4th of November. Under this program, applicants will be eligible to receive priority processing for permanent residency if they are likely to earn more than $149,000 per year in Australia, and they are highly skilled in one of seven key industry sectors: AgTech, FinTech, MedTech, Cyber Security, Energy and Mining, Space and Advanced Manufacturing, and Quantum Information/Advanced Digital/ Data Science and ICT.

16.01.2022 The Federal Government has made the following announcement: 'The Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, the Hon. David Coleman has requested and been provided with leave of absence for personal reasons. Minister Coleman is an incredibly valued member of our team and has been doing an outstanding job. I look forward to him to returning to his Ministerial role when he is in a position to do so. ... I have appointed the Hon. Alan Tudge to take on Mr Coleman’s ministerial responsibilities in an acting capacity effective immediately until such time as Mr Coleman is in a position to return. Mr Coleman will continue to perform his local responsibilities as Member for Banks. Mr Tudge has previous experience in this portfolio area in Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs and will continue with his current responsibilities as Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure. To assist Minister Tudge I have tasked the Member for Fairfax, Ted O’Brien to lead the Government’s negotiations in relation to the South East Queensland City Deal. This new responsibility will complement his existing role representing the Australian Government in relation to the 2032 South East Queensland Olympics and Paralympics. Minister Tudge will also be supported in his new responsibilities by Assistant Ministers Wood, Gee and Morton.'

14.01.2022 On the 4th of November, the Government announced that it will increase the number of places in the Work and Holiday program for applicants from Thailand, from 500 to 2000 places annually. From January, second year Work and Holiday (WH) visa holders can also apply for a third year WH visa if they carry out an additional six months specified work in regional areas during their second year. This expansion, combined with the third year visa option that starts in January, will ...see more workers available to pick crops, support farmers and boost tourism in regional Australia, Mr Coleman said. The increase will also strengthen people-to-people links between Australia and Thailand and provide more opportunities for cultural exchange between our two countries.

05.01.2022 Parent Visa Caps Reduced: On the 26th of November the Federal Government reduced the number of parent visas that can be granted in the following categories for the 2019/2020 financial year: 1. Contributory Parent Visas - from 7,175 to 6,096 visas 2. Parent Visas - from 1,500 to 1,275 visas... Interestingly, there has been an increase in other parent visas (aged dependant relative, remaining relative, carer): from 500 to 562. Is this decrease in capping a result of the Productivity Commission's " Migrant Intake into Australia Report" which states that: The contributory visa charge of just under $50 000 meets only a fraction of the fiscal costs" for contributory parent visa holders and a "minimal contribution" to parent visa holders. "Overall, the cumulated lifetime fiscal costs (in net present value terms) of a parent visa holder in 2015-16 is estimated to be between $335 000 and $410 000 per adult, which ultimately must be met by the Australian community." ... "This is a high cost for a relatively small group." Will we see a further decrease in Parent visa capping levels in future? Time will only tell. However, Australian Permanent Residents and Citizens with parents residing overseas that are considering coming to Australia to retire should urge their parents to commence the application process as soon as possible, to avoid ever-increasing waiting times and the possibility of the programme being reduced even further. 01.01.2022 The Federal Government has announced its intention to offer an incentive to International Students to study in regional areas. From 2021, International Students graduating from a bachelor or masters by course work degree at regional locations outside of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are expected to be offered a two year extension on the current post study work visa duration. Those International Students studying in Perth, the Gold Coast, Adelaide, the Sunshine Coast, Canberra, Newcastle/Lake Macquarie, Wollongong/Illawarra, Geelong and Hobart that graduate from a bachelor or masters by course work degree are expected to be offered a one year extension on the current post study work visa duration. https://www.theaustralian.com.au//d78c1565b418850b96521555
