25.01.2022 WAGIN farmers Andrew and Tegan Scanlon run 7000 Merino ewes on their mixed farming operation near Wagin, WA. Andrew says his top three reasons for running Merinos are gross margin, gross margin, gross margin. I’m not here for lifestyle reasons, I’m here to earn a quid so it comes down to functionality and what earns the most money. I’ve not seen any WA benchmarking information that says anything beats a Merino."... "If you do swap out your wool for a meat component, then you don’t get the lambing percentages to compensate for it. Wool accounted for 55 per cent of our sheep income last year, even with record sheep prices and wool prices coming off, so why would I compromise the 55pc to ‘theoretically’ increase the 45pc?

23.01.2022 "Tim Salter, Elders Longreach estimated that roughly 30% of the Longreach district is now fenced allowing for producers to get back into Merino sheep. Salter stated this recent rain, coupled with the fencing has been a real game changer returning much needed confidence back into the once traditional sheep grazing areas of Australia." Great to see Queensland producers getting back into Merinos. Insight thanks to AuctionsPlus #breedmoremerinoewes

20.01.2022 Last year the Hayes family sold 477 lambs at an average price of $180 a head with the first line of 200 weighing an average of 26kg and fetching $196.38. "They were only 9.5-10 months old, so to average $180 across the lot, well, we were pretty happy with that result," Mr Hayes said. "Factoring in that we shore the lambs in October and got an average of $34.50 a head for their wool, we were able to produce a $214 animal in under 10 months."... 18.01.2022 THE ‘modern Merino’ is far from just a buzzword for Mooralla producer Ricky Luhrs, it’s the key to a profitable business. Overhauling their Merino genetics to focus on breeding the right balance of fat, muscle and carcase is just one of many aims for the Luhr family. So next year we plan on breeding an extra 800-1000 Merino ewes and less terminals, to get more ewes out to the industry. My aim then is to have a 100pc Merino flock in the next five years, they are more profitab...le and flexible. #breedmoremerinoewes
17.01.2022 STAWELL producer Scott Nicholson likes to control as many variables as possible to maximise profitability in his livestock operation. It’s one of the reasons he runs the operation from a 100 per cent Merino base. I genuinely believe that Merinos are the most profitable animal we can run. The best thing for us is that combination of the wool market and prices for lambs, it put the industry in a good position and it really stacks up against a high-input cropping program. We’re confident that a 100pc Merino base stacks up for us financially and that it will continue to do so.

13.01.2022 Queensland pastoralists Boyd and Katie Webb run some cattle and goats but with profitability in mind, have put Merinos back at the forefront of the business, made possible with the installation of 140km of exclusion fencing. Whatever we do in the future, Merinos will be play a major part. In the past, healthy and diverse towns and communities have always been supported by a strong sheep and wool industry. Merino wool is a sustainable, clean product and should tick a lot of ethical and environmental boxes for people, I think there are still many opportunities for the demand to grow worldwide. https://www.merinos.com.au/news/342-boyd-webb-queensland

11.01.2022 MAKING a decision to increase Merino breeder numbers this season was easier than expected for Richard Verner, Korunye, but he said having a contingency plan, existing infrastructure and an ability to source feed was crucial.
