20.01.2022 Paramedic Accreditation standards

20.01.2022 Advanced Paramedic Practitioners in Wales The Welsh Ambulance Service Trust (WAST @WelshAmbulance) operates a rotational model of Advanced Paramedic Practice (A...PP) to support the care of people closer to home. They have also been actively developing a clinical aspirational role for paramedics. buff.ly/3b7OLj3 Recent years have seen a growing recognition that the Ambulance service has a considerable part to play in supporting the Unscheduled Care System and ensuring it has a central role in managing patients more appropriately, closer to their home. This acknowledges that there is a place for experienced paramedic clinicians to undertake advanced roles in supporting the wider health system. While increasingly popular in the UK it's a role that is presently not widely recognised in Australia. WAST has been moving a significant proportion of their paramedics further along the education and practice continuum to build on their foundation professional development by creating a cohort of advanced clinicians operating across the Unscheduled Care System. WAST has a history of innovation and an extensive background in the development of advanced practice. The Trust has piloted a number of projects to test alternative methods of service delivery including the use of APPs. The results of these pilot Community Paramedic Schemes have been overwhelmingly positive. They illustrate a further opportunity to support patients and reduce the pressure on Primary and Secondary Care. The pilot schemes have served to illustrate how the Trust can use its clinicians to maximum effect. This includes supporting community provision (for Out of Hours, Primary Care and other non-Ambulance service settings) where the unique skill set of the APP can be put to most effective use. Educated to Masters Level, APPs have an increased ability to assess, treat and undertake critical clinical decision making. Their increased assessment and diagnosis skills, coupled with a greater appreciation of clinical decision making, make them ideal clinicians to work within a setting that requires a well-developed ‘generalist’ skill-set to manage undifferentiated patients across a variety of presentations. That's more evidence of how paramedics may be mobilised and contribute effectively as part of the available health workforce. Read WAST’s Final Report into the APP Pilot: https://bit.ly/3hIPDNC

10.01.2022 In the latest edition of Australian Paramedic, Chris Howie ASM from SA Ambulance Service provides an insight into managing the Covid-19 pandemic in the ambulance service. Read his article online now (from page 3): http://www.ausparamedic.com.au/3d-flip-/auspar-winter-2020/... A bit about our author: Chris Howie ASM has worked for SA Ambulance Service (SAAS) since 1998, holding various operational roles before moving into the Operations Manager role in the Executive Operations Support unit, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer. Chris’s team provides an interface between SAAS and SA Health, the emergency services in SA and other government and non-government agencies in a range of areas, manages SAAS’ Staff Wellness & Assistance Programs, provides the operational interface into WH & S within SAAS. Additionally, Chris and his team are entrusted to deliver major organisation wide projects. This team also plays a significant role in the operational elements of emergency management within SAAS, hence, Chris was appointed as the COVID-19 Incident Commander for SAAS during the pandemic. Thanks for your fabulous contribution Chris!

08.01.2022 In the news: A change in SA in an effort to reduce presentations to the Emergency Department. SA Ambulance Service says: Up to 200 patients per day will soon be able to discuss their health concerns with specialised paramedics before a decision is made about how best to respond to their needs.... Our $1.6 million investment will see patients with low acuity conditions transferred from initial call takers to highly experienced paramedics, who can then provide advice, refer to an alternative care provider or dispatch an ambulance response. This is a game-changer for South Australia, with the Emergency Department not always the best place for a number of low acuity patients. However, rest assured if you need an ambulance we will be there!
