25.01.2022 With Melbourne's new HCMT No.11 taking passengers yesterday there are 7-car trains again on Melbourne's metropolitan network. 7-car EMU's were common on the system until the standardised 6 carriage was set as the max length (2 coupled sets of 3-car sets) using Hitachi and Comeng units. It's interesting to look back at the history via Marcus Wongs well written article via: https://wongm.com//extending-melbourne-suburban-train-len/ The new HCMTs will opperate as far as the n...ew depot at Pakenham East on the Gippsland line but on the 23 August 1986 a 7-car Harris EMU is seen venturing a bit further on a rare on a special (When electrification was available into the Latrobe Valley). The Harris was destined for Traralgon and is seen at Warragal station on the down journey. The destination on the rear of the train reads Deer Park West while the front showed Traralgon. The tour even used the city loop. The City of Busselton will be marking the 150th anniversary of the locomotive engine, with an exhibition in 2021 and would love your photos, stories, and information. Ballaarat was the first locomotive to operate in Western Australia and is the last of its kind (a 3ft 6in locomotive) still in existence in Australia. Many p...eople have holidayed in Busselton and had photos taken near the engine as they are eating icecreams or getting burnt on the hot metal. We would love those photos. Maybe it is a memory of getting a finger stuck in a hole or climbing underneath the engine feel free to share! The station building is opposite the rail motor along the street. The line terminated right next to the Esplanade, which was located east of Esplanade Road (14.9 kilometres fromAdelaide station). 09.01.2022 Time for a midweek pick me up . . . R703 is on its first run with a long line of livestock trucks. R703 was the first locomotive in service for the Victorian Railways R Class, seen possibly heading to North-East Victoria on 28 June 1951. On 18 May 1964 R703 hauled the last regular steam-hauled passenger service out of Melbourne, the 6.05pm Geelong service. R703 was listed as in service from the 21 June 1951 to 28 August 1965 and was scrapped on 12 May 1967. K Smith, ARHS Archives 197999 Extra notes from the Rail Motor Society website: The last unit of the class, 638/738, was designed for use on the Casino to Murwillumbah line. The unit was based in Grafton to provide a connection with the Brisbane Express and enable t...hat train's timetable to be accelerated beyond Grafton. As it was intended to haul a parcel trailer over the branch, only a small (2 ton capacity) luggage area was provided in the No.1 End of the power car for local traffic, while the parcel trailer would handle the through traffic. The No.1 End also accommodated 20 Second Class, while the No.2 End compartment seated 28 Second Class. The car was coded MPF, while the trailer car (coded GTC) followed the layout of those used with the GPF and HFP units. Extra Notes from Col Gilbertson: The van behind the two-car unit is an EPT parcels trailer. Three of them, 1000-1002 were built between 1968 and 1972, for service on the Brisbane Express to provide a brakevan for the specially-built 620 class set that ran to Murwillumbah from May 1968 until March 1973, when the Brisbane Express was altered to run to Murwillumbah, as the Gold Coast Motorail Express. These three EPTs were built at Eveleigh Carriage Workshops using a one-piece moulded plywood body, manufactured by Ralph Symonds, whose factory was on reclaimed land at Homebush Bay, in the same salubrious locality as the State Brickworks and the State Abattoir... That area is now called Wentworth Point.
