24.01.2022 Very interesting, relating to many of today’s issues of political control

24.01.2022 The NCSCs email reporting service has so far received more than 1.8 million reports in the past few months, resulting in 16,800 phishing sites being blocked or taken down, with the the fraudsters malicious activities having already cost the British public over 197 million in 2018 alone.

22.01.2022 I would rather have a cat.

22.01.2022 AusScot does not endorse this.

21.01.2022 Phishing scams, the most common form of scam, are up by 44 per cent compared with the same time last year. Scammers pretend to be from government departments and businesses, like the ATO, myGov, Telstra or the NBN, to gain bank account details and other information about a person that can be used to impersonate them. Once a scammer has that information, they can then use it to access individuals bank accounts or superannuation, take out loans under their names and impersonate them on social media to try to get money from family and friends. Scam victims who have lost personal information are vulnerable to further scams, fraud or identity theft, Ms Rickard said.

21.01.2022 So thats how it works folks.

20.01.2022 more issues with hackers, about time Facebook took some serious action .

16.01.2022 Navy Veteran Grace Hopper was a rear admiral of the United States Navy and an innovator in the realm of computer science. She earned her Ph.D. in mathematics fr...om Yale and became a professor of mathematics at Vassar College before deciding to serve during World War II. In 1943 Hopper was sworn in to the Naval Reserve and received her commission as a lieutenant, junior grade. She was assigned to the Bureau of Ships Computation Project at Harvard, where she served as one of the first programmers for the Mark I computer, which became instrumental to the war effort. After World War II, Hopper started working on the team developing the UNIVAC I, one of the first commercial computers in the United States. She also spent years pursuing her idea of creating a programming language using only English words, and in 1957 she and another team created FLOW-MATIC, the first data processing language based on English. FLOW-MATIC would influence the creation of COBOL, a computer language still widely in use today. Hopper would continue to serve as a consultant and speaker on computer technologies for much of her life. Hopper was forced to retire from the Naval Reserve in 1966 after turning 60 but was recalled in 1967 to help the Navy standardize their multiple computer languages and programs. She retired again in 1971, but was asked to return in 1972. After more than 40 years of service Hopper retired in 1986 as the Navys oldest active duty commissioned officer and one of its few female admirals. During her lifetime, she was awarded the Legion of Merit and the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. We honor her service. #HonoringVets

15.01.2022 CUDAHY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Neighbors are shocked after a Cudahy mother is accused of trying to help ISIS. We told you last night at ten, Facebook turned the woman into the FBI. Authorities say she hacked social media accounts to communicate her support for the terrorist group.... Waheba Dais is in jail now but is said to have hacked accounts on multiple social media sites including Facebook. "Its really more classified as a takeover attack." According to the criminal complaint, Waheba Dais could crack passwords. Once inside the account, she would delete the persons friends, change the profile picture, name, and start posting about ISIS. "A lot of times take over and impersonate. In this case, shes completely changed the profile, started from scratch, but under someone elses name," said Geoff Gardiner, Owner/President of Rescue Dog Technology.

12.01.2022 Heres how Facebooks secret ambient audio recording tech works: Smartphones listen out for signals hidden in adverts or other content which are too high-pitched for humans to hear. Once they hear this signal, the phone begins recording ambient audio including the sound of the advert which contains the code. This is then analysed to generate an ambient audio footprint which is stored on an online system along with identify information about the person who owns the phone. The data is then used to work out whether someone watched an ad or engaged with content. This info is stored to make sure Facebook shows it users adverts they are likely to engage with. 07.01.2022 According to an IBM blog, the company has made incredible headway on an innovation that not only functions better than conventional lithium-ion batteries but could actually eliminate the need for heavy metals such as iron, cobalt and nickel in battery production. Heavy metals, especially cobalt, have received negative attention for being mined in exploitative and unethical ways. Instead, the companys invention makes use of three new materials, which have no recorded history ...of being combined to form a battery before according to Young-hye Na, IBMs manager of materials innovation for next-gen batteries. In fact, the materials for the newest battery, which include lithium iodide and a new and proprietary electrolyte formulation, are sourced in the last place you would expect seaweed, and can be extracted in a way that is much less invasive than mining.

06.01.2022 Fed up Facebook users say they are being forced to go to extreme measures to regain control of their hacked personal pages, even hiring lawyers to take action against the social media giant. Last month, nine.com.au reported on a well-known tactic used by Facebook hackers which appears to be growing in popularity. The hackers are targeting users who also have a linked business account on Facebook. Usually, the first thing a user notices is a request to change the password for ...their personal account. Then their profile photo is suddenly swapped to an ISIS flag. Facebook will automatically take down the users account for violating its "community standards". But, by this time, the hacker has made themselves an admin on the users business page, and set about achieving their goal, which is to use the credit card details associated with the business page to purchase Facebook ads. Two high-profile Australians have recently fallen victim to the ISIS hack. See more

01.01.2022 As the owner of two small Victorian businesses that Ive worked my absolute backside off and spent much money building, Jen Clark Design and Ranges Escapes (the... latter of which is currently and indefinitely inoperational) I was ABSOLUTELY INCENSED yesterday, not by Daniel Andrews governments announcements, which were in most expected, but by the email I received from Paul Guerra, the CEO of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry immediately following. Let me quote the first two paragraphs of Pauls email: "Today is a massive blow for business and jobs in Victoria. Businesses needed hope from the State Governments roadmap to reopening, but it failed to deliver an easing of restrictions quickly. Instead of a plan to reopen and invest back into business, the painful truth will now be the realisation for many of our members, who have been desperately hanging on, they will have to close, and tell their employees they no longer have a job." .................................... Lets make this as easy as possible and look at some key points here (Note: Im using caps not to shout but in lieu of being able to bold or italicise points / particular words): 1. MASSIVE BLOW FOR BUSINESSES AND JOBS IN VICTORIA Absolutely. No-one has ever said otherwise. This situation is utterly crap and no-one is disputing that. It is one of the most challenging, confronting and repetitious exercises we will ever have to endure and many of our individual and collective hopes and dreams for the future will be lost and - in some cases - need to be completely reimagined. That is HARD. But let me state one thing, NO ONES (and I mean NO ONES) business or job is worth more than another persons life. 2. NEEDED HOPE FROM THE STATE GOVERNMENT How does THIS STATE GOVERNMENT VALUES YOUR LIFE so much so that it is prepared to do what is right for the community it has been elected to serve and protect, based on data, science and modelling assembled and widely endorsed by multiple epidemiological experts, AS OPPOSED TO prioritising economic growth at the expense of indefinitely more lives, NOT equate to providing hope? Maybe Im going out on a limb here, but I assume I can only have / experience hope if Im alive? 3. FAILED TO DELIVER AN EASING OF RESTRICTIONS QUICKLY This was possibly the sentence that got me most irate. I shouldnt have to state this, but restrictions CANNOT be eased quickly Paul AS PEOPLE WILL DIE. If this is the governments failure then I hope they fail and fail again. Im sorry this doesnt suit your broader business agenda, but I dare say those whove lost loved ones due to this ridiculously contagious and horrible disease might beg to differ. I suggest perhaps you go and meet with some of them and hear about the suffering and loss theyve gone through first-hand. Maybe then youll reconsider your need for efficiency above life? 4. PLAN TO REOPEN AND INVEST BACK INTO BUSINESS Poor us, the dates the government proposed for this based on the fact that were dealing with a HIGHLY UNPREDICTABLE AND DEADLY INFECTIOUS DISEASE, didnt suit our second quarter marketing plans. That said, A PLAN WAS ACTUALLY PUT FORWARD that on or around October 26th many Melbourne-based businesses will be able to re-open FOR GOOD, rather than opening next week and then having to close within 2-3 weeks again for a third lockdown which would likely INCLUDE CHRISTMAS. Dare I say it, but for many businesses, Christmas is one of the most lucrative periods of the year, is it not? Not to mention social. Andrews made assurances hed announce further business support mechanisms today and throughout the next few days. Many regional Victorian businesses will realistically be able to reopen within weeks, if currently closed. 5. PAINFUL TRUTH No shit, sherlock. Yes, it is painful. But we will rise above it, and it is both TEMPORARY and TRANSITORY. We will only get back to normal if and when we do the right thing and when people are not dying at a rate that reopening businesses and the community at large would threaten even more life. .................................... This email from Paul implies the business community in Victoria has no resilience, tenacity, dynamism, ability to make sacrifices, be agile, socially conscious and put aside their entitlement and disappointment for the greater good and/or ability to prioritise human life over economic profit. That, put simply, is the crux of it. It doesnt in ANY WAY reflect my values as a business owner or a person. And I know many other businesses and business owners that embody these very values above and who Pauls statement couldnt reflect less. Ironically, it is often possessing these values that enables many wonderful people to run successful small businesses in the first place. I absolutely stand with Dan Andrews, Brett Sutton and their greater teams decisions. Lets see this thing out and get back to business PROPERLY as soon as the threat to human life is at such a level that we can safely and sustainably do so. #IStandWithDan
