24.01.2022 Audiobooks will continue to gain popularity and more indie authors will invest The big thing in the book industry today is audio books, it seems like almost everyone you meet is talking about audio these days. Whether it’s podcasts or audio books, people are consuming more spoken word audio than ever, and the stats back it up. A 2019 survey from Edison Research revealed that half of all readers over the age of 12 have listened to an audio book in the past year. Additionally, ...audio book listeners trended younger. Fifty-five percent of listeners were below the age of 45. The survey stats showed an increase from 2018, and the expectation is that audio will continue to grow. For audio books, 2019 was really the year of the library. We saw incredible library sales growth for authors in 2019, especially in the Cost Per Checkout model, Indie authors have long experimented with audio, and we see more indies getting into audio in 2020. Mark Lefebvre of Draft2Digital notes that access to audio is getting less difficult for authors: Indie authors have more options than just being on Audible. With better access to audio book creation and distribution, we expect to see more audio books in the marketplace in 2020. Marketing audio books remains a challenge for authors but effective marketing will become more important as the space gets more crowded. We’re seeing a lot more experimentation with price control and running promotions. The one big problem with audio, it can cost a lot of money to produce, up to $10000. You have to find someone to read the book and have a voice to suit, this is hard to find. Voice over people charge a lot to read a book, up to $230USD an hour. They read around 9500 words an hour, so you can figure out the cost on your book by looking at your word count. 19.01.2022 Why Are book covers so important? A book cover is an invitation and a way of seducing the reader. It beckons, inviting them to enter the world of your book and link with your characters for awhile. Your cover should convey the tone and genre of your story, be eye-catching and, most importantly, look like it’s been professionally done. 1. Your book cover should be big and bold. The cover design needs to clearly display the book title and author name so they can be read even w...hen the image is small. Remember, your book will exist in the digital world too, and eBook retailers like Amazon and others often display your cover as little more than a thumbnail. Make your title and author name standout. 2. Your book cover should pass the 2-second test. Can a potential reader understand what your book is about with a quick glance at your cover? Does your design quickly convey the vibe and tone of your work? Horror novel? Make it scary. Fly-fishing guide? Make sure there’s a fishing rod. 3. Your book cover should make you look like you belong in Barnes & Noble. Your writing is world class so your book cover design should reflect that. If your cover art looks amateurish, the customer will assume you writing is too. So if your book cover does not speak to your reader, or be confusing about the topic of the book, buyers will simply click of and never return. William
