08.01.2022 Hi all, sorry the site went a bit quite I left my I-pad at Rosehill after the knife show and I only just got it back. Here’s a photo of our stand at the Sydney Knife show, we had a great weekend, selling plenty of knifes, skins and anlter. Also meeting plenty of new business minded people. On the tanning side I have a few skins on the go and plan on posting some photo’s soon. I have a very nice and unusual Fallow menal Stag I just finished. There’s a heap of goat skins rolling in so I might do a story on getting that smell out. As soon as our hunting season is over I might get time to start up the Web page but until then for quotes please send me a message or e-mail. Cheers. Troy.

03.01.2022 Hi all, Lately I have done a few skins for clients that had dried out a little too much. I will try and post some photo’s but they are Mid size Fallow Deer. This usually happens when the skins have been left in the sun for too long before salting and storing for whatever reason. Skins usually react well too the pickle and come back good but it does make the fleshing a lot harder and more time is involved in this process. Also sometimes with thicker hides they don’t come back ...and stay quiet stiff. Here is a step by step procedure to present a perfect skin to the tanner. * Remove hide as soon as possible in a cool place. * Removing as much meat and fat as possible. * Salt skin as soon as possible keeping it about 1-2mm thick and pushed right into the edges. * Fold and Roll the skin up folding the flesh/salted side into its self. * Store rolled skin in a heshin bag or silimlar bag that breath’s. Never but in plastic, hide will sweat and rot. * Keeping in mind the hide will leak and has to be put in a suitable container. * The hide need‘s to be stored in a cool dry place. * After 1-2 days the hide needs to be removed and the old salt scrapped off. * Apply a lite coat of salt and roll the skin the same, it can know be frozen and transported to the tanner. * After the 2nd salting the skin can remain just salted for about a week or so depending on temp/skin condition etc. * Best to send in one of those foam fruit boxes with some newspaper on the bottom for leakage. This is the best method for producing the best hides. Cheers. Frito. See more
