22.01.2022 Belly scratches with "Dad" Tim Faulkner. Did you know that Rufous bettongs usually emerge shortly after dark to forage and primarily eat herbs, roots, tubers and fungi. They can cover up to 2km 4.5km a night when foraging. The rufous bettong is a solitary species that shelters during the day in ‘nests’, shallow excavations with a dome of fibrous vegetation across the top and a single entrance. All that digging is what makes them so important to the ecosystem!

15.01.2022 Tasmanian Devils are making an Australian mainland comeback with the help of some friends! Actors and friends of WildArk, Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky, helped release 11 Tasmanian Devils into the wild on September 10th, bringing the total released Devils to 26. They are among the first Tasmanian Devils to live in the wild on mainland Australia in 3,000 years. The team at Aussie Ark will monitor the marsupials in the 400-hectare wildlife sanctuary in the Barrington Tops thr...ough camera traps, radio collars and surveys to check how they are adjusting to life in the wild. The Devils have been given a platform to succeed - so stay tuned for regular updates on their progress and the 2021 breeding season! Tasmanian devils vanished entirely from mainland Australia, theoretically because they were outcompeted by introduced dingoes, which hunt in packs. Dingoes no longer occur in Aussie Arks protected areas, making it the perfect location for Devils. Dingoes never made it to Tasmania and the Devils thrived, but the island state, along with its Devils, now has it's own problems. A transmissible, painful and fatal disease called Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD)one of very few known contagious cancershas decimated between 80 - 90 percent of the wild population of Tasmanian devils. Aussie Ark, previously known as Devil Ark, is as committed to the survival of the Devil in Tasmanian as ever. As a part of the mainland disease free insurance population we've bred over 400 joeys some of which have returned to Tasmanian. Now we are embarking on the ambitious opportunity to rewild and rebuild mainland ecosystems. Aussie Ark is their lifeline! You can help Aussie Arlk rewilding Australia by donating today! This sanctuary is the first of many - we have the land, we need your help to rebuild Australia's ecosystems. 13.01.2022 FIVE FAST FACTS - Long-nosed Potoroos are generally solitary, except when females have a young at heel. They are not territorial. - Potoroos are mainly nocturnal, resting during day in nests made of leaves under dense cover. - Habitat includes wet forests and wet scrubland. Dense under-storey is essential for cover; eucalypt forests are important because potoroos rely on fungi associated with these trees. - The female potoroo carries nesting material with her tail; tails a...re semi-prehensile. - Their fur is brown-grey with rufous tinge on flanks; pale grey under parts. 12.01.2022 Aussie Ark Returns Platypus to The Wild After Bushfire Rescue During Australia’s bushfire crisis, the world watched as Australian land was flattened and left covered in ash. During this time Aussie Ark staff were in the field providing supplementary food sources, relocating animals and bringing into care those that needed veterinary attention. Among the species rescued by Aussie Ark were 5 platypus. The individuals were severely malnourished, and their pelts were showing sig...ns of extreme distress. With rains now falling and river systems repairing, Aussie Ark has been out releasing the animals back into the waters they were rescued from. Each waterway the platypus was collected from has been carefully surveyed to establish water quality, abundance of food and disease in preparation for the release. This is the moment we have worked so hard for! . . . . Rewild Australia
