24.01.2022 Meet 'Buzzy Bee' - part of the HelloKoala exhibition In November I was delighted to see 22 charming HelloKoala artworks in a travelling exhibition at the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens. Of special interest was 'Buzzy Bee', a gorgeous celebration of our beautiful Australian native bees. Painted by the talented mid-north coast artist, Lisa Burrell, 'Buzzy Bee' features colourful and accurate portraits of 20 Australian native bee species, ranging from the Great Carpenter Bee down... to some of our minute varieties. These bees buzz around vibrant bush flowers, including all of the state floral emblems. Commentary with the artwork pointed out the importance of these tiny bees as as Australian pollinators. Read more: https://www.hellokoalas.com/koalas/buzzy-bee/ 'Buzzy Bee' is one of over 75 individually designed artworks painted on one-metre high koala sculptures based in the Port Macquarie district of the NSW Mid North Coast. All the artworks raise awareness of protecting our koalas and our environment. The Sydney Botanic Gardens exhibition has now ended. However, all of the HelloKoala sculptures will be reunited again for the HelloKoalas 2020 Festival on 6-8 June, 2020 in Port Macquarie. What a great time to visit Port Macquarie and support this regional area, which was so badly impacted in the recent bushfires! https://www.hellokoalas.com/hello-koalas-festival-2020/ #nativebees #bees #hellokoala #wildflowers #ozpollinators

23.01.2022 https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au//scientists-say-native-st Health benefits and unique qualities of stingless bee honey! Exciting new research shows native stingless bee honey contains a rare sugar called trehalulose. This gives native bee honey a lower GI than European bee honey.... Professor Fletcher, University of Queensland, said, "Indigenous people had long claimed health benefits from native honey and science has now backed up many of those claims." 16.01.2022 https://www.wheenbeefoundation.org.au//green-carpenter-be/ The devastating bushfires in SE Australia have impacted countless native bees -- including the iconic Green Carpenter Bees of Kangaroo Island. Three months of ferocious bushfires have swept extensively through our national parks. Countless native bees have been lost, including stingless bees trapped in their hollow tree nests. Many surviving native bee populations will have little or no flowers left to visit. ... The iconic Green Carpenter Bees of Kangaroo Island, SA, have been heavily impacted too. Efforts were underway to provide supplementary nest stalks for these stunning bees, the only population that remains in SA and Victoria. Sadly researchers fear that most of these nests will have been lost in the recent bushfires. For the full story, read: https://www.wheenbeefoundation.org.au//green-carpenter-be/ Here at Aussie Bee, we have been uncomfortably close to major NSW bushfires since November. We have had to devote all our energies to protecting our research centre and its native bee nests. Fortunately, thanks to the amazing backburning work of the Rural Fire Service, the threat in our area has now substantially eased. However, we still have two or three months of hot weather ahead. We hope that the heavy rain this week across the firegrounds, forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology, comes to pass! 10.01.2022 Our native bees are enjoying some much-needed rain! As steady rain falls over Sydney and the mountains, our blue banded bees are napping on their roost in the shelter of the house eaves. After months of devastating fires in NSW, we hope this rain brings some respite to our hard-hit wildlife, as well as to our exhausted fire fighters. ... So many native bees, that nest in tiny holes in timber, would have lost their nest sites in these fires. You could help these bees by setting up a Bee Hotel. 04.01.2022 https://www.horticulture.com.au//glasshouse-trials-prove-/ Stingless Bee success in crop pollination trials Trials of stingless bee pollination of greenhouse strawberries found good yields of tasty fruit were produced. This is part of a major Western Sydney Uni research program searching for better ways to use Australia's native wild pollinators.... European honeybees do not adapt well to greenhouses and can sting; and pollinating by hand is labour intensive. So using native stingless bees as pollinators could be a good option for growers. Professor James Cook said: 'Australia is home to around 2000 species of native bees, as well as thousands of species of pollinating moths, flies, butterflies, birds and even bats, that all contribute to native and managed ecosystem pollination.' #bees #nativebees #ozpollinators #pollination #strawberries
