08.01.2022 Love to go back really soon I love the outback with its colours, smells, the sunsets and the sunrises.

02.01.2022 Just spent the last few days travelling to Ooldea for the 100th Anniversary of the joining of the East and West Lines (17 October 1917). The day was a warm one, 38 degrees and there was a crowd in excess of 500, a great turnout . Among the dignitaries was Dick Smith, who donated his time and Dick Smith Foods sponsored the celebration. The original memorial, which was placed in 1967 (50th celebration), was made of plywood and obviously didn’t stand up to the extreme weather o...ver the years. This was replaced with a new memorial which included the original pieces of rail from the 1967 structure. The two pieces of steel were from both Western Australia and South Australia rail construction teams. SA steel was from BHP in Newcastle and WA rail line was from Tennessee USA. Apparently the two states were in competition to build the longest part of the railway. South Australia held up supplies of BHP steel from Broken Hill to Western Australia. The Western Australian team eventually had to source from USA. The final tally of line completed - approximately 995kms from Kalgoorlie and 697kms from Port Augusta. The joining of the lines occurred 1.45pm (SA time) 17 October 1917 just west of Ooldea. See more
