24.01.2022 THE SUNDAY SONG STORY A year in the making This song and film clip started one Friday morning nearly a year ago at Taree High School where I ...have been teaching music for the ACMF Australian Children's Music Foundation - ACMF for the last few years. The program, founded by Don Spencer OAM the program has been active at the school since 2013 and is life changing for many young people. These amazing students singing are part of the Taree High Support Unit. I have loved every single moment being involved with the class and teaching them. We have learned so much together and this song and film clip is a true testament to that. Some of these students I have taught music for the ACMF as far back as 2013 when I started with the program here in Taree. When you spend so much time with people and have so much fun the relationships build and things like this become possible. I rolled into school on my usual Friday sat down with my guitar and just randomly said to them all, Why don’t we all write a song together? They all said yes, and I thought ok let’s see how we go and blurted out the first thing that came to my head, Its Friday morning once again! Young Caleb the master of rhymes and jokes said, I can’t wait for this day to end! With that we, teachers and all the class burst out laughing and we were off. Lesson after lesson, week after week we worked together building the song, rhyming, and laughing thinking about how much we all loved the weekend and how we did not want Sunday to end. Two-day weeks, five-day weekends, laying in hammocks, fishing, sailing, dolphins and all the things we could conjure up to be the best weekend imaginable. One of the best things was to have teacher and bassist Benn Saunders in class with us, his way with the students is just something amazing to be around along with all the class teachers and support crew. Over the whole term we finally wrote the last line I don’t want Monday to come! and decided it was done. We had such a good song and we sang it together over and over and at every lesson after that for weeks. So many incredible emotional, funny, and inspirational moments getting this together, these are moments that I will never forget. I thought, we can’t just leave it here! This needs to be heard by everyone and this story needs to be told. We approached the wonderful principal of Taree High, Allison Alliston to ask would the school support a recording and film clip. Without any hesitation her answer was yes. We arranged a recording session with the extraordinary producer and engineer Jake Davey at his studio Jake is also an ex ACMF teacher and student of Taree High, so it was the perfect scenario. The day for recording came and all the students arrived with the teachers to the studio. Everyone had an opportunity to experience what it was like to sing and record a song, their excitement was infectious. It was without a doubt in my mind one of the most inspirational things to be involved with. They all conquered their anxieties to give it a go and sang their absolute best. Jake was able to show them the recording process on the computer so they could hear and see it all come together. Another fantastic thing that happened amid all of this was having Taree High student Kurt Stephenson playing piano on the recording. Kurt, prior to the recording was awarded the Joel Abernethy Advantage a scholarship for excellence in music courtesy of John Abernethy and Wendy Smyrk in memory of their son Joel. This scholarship is awarded by the ACMF to some students showing exceptional talent in music where they can access extra personal support with private lessons etc. Kurt now is playing fantastic music and multiple instruments. It’s so good to have him play his first recording session with us and we are very proud of him. Also featured on the song is the incredible electric guitar playing of the ACMF ambassador Pete Northcote who happily sent his track to add to it. On drums the very talented Rhys Zacher from Spinlight Studios. Next was the film clip. The very next week we all went out to the very popular live music venue, Flow at Old Bar. Thanks Steve and Jen for all the support, the day was fantastic to say the least. Jake took all the footage back to the studio and put it all together. The very next week we all watched it at school and the reaction was astounding and emotional at the same time. We were so happy with the song and the clip we sent it to Don Spencer (Founder of the ACMF) to see if he would like to sing with us. He said yes which was just the icing on the cake. So, we set a date for Don to come up. Just before he was due to come and record his track the devastating bushfires hit our valley and we had to the project on ice. The year got away with all the mayhem that followed with the fires and so we pushed it forward to after the school holidays January 2020. We were all set to go with a new school year. Don had made plans to Taree and along came Covid 19 to put a stop once again to the project and it went back up on the shelf. Our opportunity finally came when Don visited Wingham Brush Public School to do a segment for the ABC news about bushfire relief and how music is such a healing thing. He dropped into Jakes studio, sang with us, and just gave it that signature Don Spencer feel. What a treat for all of us to have him as part of this epic project. I just want to take a moment to commend the incredible students in this clip who gave their all and helped create this wonderful story and song. You all are leaders and inspire others to have a go. Your courage to sing in the studio, to sing on the stage for the clip was just fantastic and you all can be very proud of yourselves. As a parent of a young boy (Marli) who is on the autism spectrum who needs constant support both at school and at home these young people are very dear to me. I also want to make mention of the wonderful parents and carers of this group of for supporting all of this. The ACMF is such a positive force in so many lives and creates opportunities for so many young people all over the country. This video is and always will be one of the happiest things I have ever been involved in and I hope everyone who watches this gets that same feeling I get every time I watch it. Thanks to Lara Coffee NBN Television and Andy(Camera) up here in Taree for covering the story to give it such great support. Huge thanks to the selfless and kind teachers, Allison Alliston (Principal), Karlene Reading (Taree High ACMF program coordinator), Diana Silcock Benn Saunders, Janelle Muldoon, Deb Bonds and Lillians dad Chris Rowsell. Jake Davey you excel in everything you do and it’s such a treat to have worked so closely with you in getting this together. To our Taree Rotary Clubs thanks for such support over the years. You were there from the very start and still supporting year in year out Rotary Club of Taree All of this would never have happened without the Australian Children’s Music Foundation. So the biggest thanks to Don Spencer and all the ACMF crew for keeping this whole thing going through thick and thin so that so many kids in Australia can access music to make them happy. It really is an honour to be a part of it.
