25.01.2022 The conventional veterinary approach to cancer of cut, burn and poison is not the approach we are taking with our dog with cancer. Sadly, people faced with the dreaded diagnosis only follow what their conversational veterinarian is recommending which is often invasive and futile or indeed causing secondary cancers down the track. Often these options benefit the person but not the animal.... And we understand why as theyre not aware of other options, dont believe they can work or do not have access to an integrative or holistic veterinarian. Once surgery or chemical/radiation is complete, no proactive treatment is given so really its just a ticking time bomb as to when things return. Cancer is just the symptom of a much deeper issue. There is always another way or at the very least you can adopt some natural therapies to support the traditional cut, burn, poison approach.

23.01.2022 There are a million reason I would never apply or get my dog/cat to ingest insecticides like flea and tick treatments. Terrible what these insecticides are do...ing to the planet. The problem is these chemicals are so potent, he said, even at tiny concentrations. We would expect them to be having significant impacts on insect life in rivers. One flea treatment of a medium-sized dog with imidacloprid contains enough pesticide to kill 60 million bees - Prof Dave Goulson The researchers said the blanket use of flea treatments should be discouraged and that new regulation is needed. Currently, the flea treatments are approved without an assessment of environmental damage. https://www.theguardian.com//pet-flea-treatments-poisoning In other news: The FDA is alerting pet owners and veterinarians of the potential for neurologic adverse events in dogs and cats when treated with drugs that are in the isoxazoline class : FDA Statement - https://www.fda.gov//fact-sheet-pet-owners-and-veterinaria Peer-Reviewed Paper Out of the 2,751 respondents: When any flea treatment (Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica) was given to dogs, 66.6% of respondents experienced a REACTION to the treatment!- https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/vms3.285

22.01.2022 This is something I often show clients (in high res) when Im trying to explain things like: Why I prefer to activate pleasant feelings/engaging emotions whe...n Im trying to influence dog behavior Why it is absolutely NOT possible to strengthen/increase or activate fear with something that the dog experiences as being pleasant and thus rewarding fear cannot happen if you give your dog something it finds pleasant, like i.e. comfort, affection or food. How fear may be activated or strengthened when your dog has a threatening experience Why I therefore strongly advise people not to use any form(s) of intimidation when trying to influence dog behavior, because this could activate protective emotions (which can cause aggression as well as freezing or fleeing or avoiding and other self-protective actions) The difference between influencing behavior and influencing emotions. Emotions are influenced by the experience in itself. Behavior is driven by emotional reactions, as an outcome. Influencing behavior and influencing emotions really are two different things. 17.01.2022 THE PUPPY BRAIN & FEAR Dr Kathy Murphy of Barking Brains gave a fantastic talk on the neurological process of fear yesterday at #GeekWeek. The session primar...ily focused on the developing puppy brain and how best to protect them. While the current trend is to get our dogs out into routine life, during a puppy's sensitive period (3-16 weeks) it is critical to carefully socialize your puppy only in heavily controlled environments. Be discerning. You also need to be assertive in protecting your puppy from too many negative interactions as their brain is not in a state to recover from these events fully. The classic puppy guardian mistake is forced interaction with people or other dogs aiming to "socialize" them. This exposure can sometimes provide a double whammy if there is food involved. The puppy is forced into close contact with a person, they may be interested in the food being offered from the stranger's hand, they go to take the food and then the hand reaches in to touch them, invading their space and teaching them the human hand with food is not always a positive experience. Dr Murphy warns that the repercussion of a fairly innocuous event can quickly establish a stable, long-term fear memory that can be virtually impossible to desensitize away. This is not to say puppies can never have a negative experience, but the resiliency needed to bounce back from these events has not fully formed in the dog's young brain. What can you do to help your puppy? Sign up to a good, structured puppy class run by a fear/force-free professional as soon as you know you have a puppy joining your family. This class does NOT need to be in-person, virtual classes can often be more effective as your puppy is able to learn in a comfortable environment, without distractions and you can work on solidifying the most important relationship in your dog's life - the one with YOU. Many people will skip puppy classes, but puppy classes should be seen as a fundamental care element, like vaccinations.

14.01.2022 Yes, it is important for your dog to exercise - BUT the type of exercise is just as important. Just as it is not appropriate to attach another human being to a ...lead and drag them alongside a car to make them exercise it is not appropriate for a dog to be attached to a lead and dragged alongside a bike as it is ridden along. This type of exercise places stress on your dog physically - It places stress on their joints, bones and muscles. Long term this can lead to arthritis and many other health conditions. This type of exercise places stress on your dog mentally - Imagine the stress of having to keep running, not being able to stop if you were feeling pain, not being able to stop and catch your breath, not being able to stop to go to the toilet, not being able to stop if you were feeling unwell. Not being able to stop until the bike stops. Long term, this mental stress can lead to poor health and behavioural issues. Not only does this type of exercise affect your dog mentally and physically, it is dangerous for yourself, the public and your dog. Please be mindful and respectful of your dog. Please allow them to leisurely explore their environment, please allow them choice and curiosity, please allow them to enjoy their walk. All dogs, even the most active ones, love a slower walk, one where they can sniff and explore. We have amazing customers here at The Complete Pet Company who understand the benefits of allowing their dogs the freedom to sniff and explore their environment, but sadly when out and about we see far too many dogs having no choice but to run alongside their owners bike. Please share this post. Lets get the word out. It is illegal to run your dog from a lead while riding a bike and it is not OK! Take your dog for a walk before going for a bike ride.

12.01.2022 NEW YEAR, NEW DOG? Ever wondered what to for in a trainer? It really should be someone your dog and you feel comfortable with, but in my opinion we need t...o be open to finding the best of the best in our local area and sometimes challenging our beliefs and learning new things can be uncomfortable. Here's some things to consider: 1 Qualifications matter! You wouldn't take nutrition advice from a nutritionist if they weren't suitably qualified. The same should be said for dog training. Ask who they trained with and verify they are a registered training provider. You will be surprise how many aren't qualified. 2 What do you believe? A good trainer should use methods that are backed by current scientific evidence. This is why I harp on about positive reinforcement. A recent study (there are many others too), "Does training method matter? Evidence for the negative impact of aversive-based methods on companion dog welfare", showed that this does matter. While you might have grown up thinking about dogs and how to train them, be open to learning something new for your dog's benefit..and yours. 3 Support. Learning for dog and owner takes . A lifetime really. Work with a trainer who wants to support you and your dog on this journey and is passionate about your individual dog's needs. 4 FUN! Above all else learning and training should be fun. So make sure you are all having fun!

07.01.2022 THE NOT TALKED ABOUT SIDE EFFECTS OF THE MOST POPULAR DRUG IN THE WORLD! Metronidazole is the most prescribed antimicrobial for treatment of diarrhea & GI ...problems in pets and a new study highlights some very important issues that pet parents and their veterinarians need to talk about before prescribing this drug. The new study from the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine found metronidazole administration obliterated a dogs microbiome and a month after the drug, the microbiome was still profoundly destroyed. Our results point toward a longlasting effect of metronidazole administration, and should be considered as further evidence to support a more cautious approach to prescribing this antimicrobial to dogs. - https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/jvim.15871 Has your pet been on this medication? This Sunday at 10am ET, Rodney Habib and I will do a quick FB Live about this new study and I will go over what you need to to think about before and after using this medication.

07.01.2022 Use your Manners! The Sniff test - Stop doing that! The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of ...what they're actually doing. When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions. If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed. People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you. Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction. If you are meeting a dog, what should you do? Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again. Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side. Ignore the dog & talk to the owner. Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats. This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

05.01.2022 Bad news for snacking cats ...(dont shoot the messenger, I didnt write the study!) New Research says: Got a cat that always seems hungry? New University of... Guelph research suggests you might want to reduce -- not increase -- how often you feed them. Animal nutrition specialists in U of G's Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) and Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) have found that feeding cats one large meal a day may help control hunger better than feeding them several times a day. The research, published in the journal PLOS One, revealed that cats that ate one meal a day were more satisfied, which could result in less food-begging behaviour. The results also suggest cutting back feeding frequency could help reduce the risk of obesity by controlling cats' appetite and potentially making them eat less -- an important discovery given that obesity is the most common nutritional problem affecting cats.

04.01.2022 Learn what your dog is trying to communicate with you and other animals

04.01.2022 [MEETING OTHER DOGS ON A SMILING LEASH] Dakota is one of our regulars on the Smiling Leash page. Today we want to share some pictures of her second meeting with... Barney. For the first meeting we arranged an encounter where they did some parallel walking but did not meet up close. Parallel walking is a really good way of letting dogs get used to other dogs they dont know or havent met up close before. For more information on parallel walking, take a look at this post: https://www.facebook.com/smilingleash/posts/177310770414902 It is always important to make sure that the encounter is not stressful for any of the dogs involved. Dakota is a bit impulsive when meeting other dogs. If you have a dog that does not know how to meet other dogs, prepare first and do some pre-meeting sessions. Consult an ethical trainer if you need help. As always, we recommend you look for one in your area here: https://www.pdte.eu/find-a-trainer ? Communication is vital for a dog encounter. Dogs mostly communicate in a silent way, using their body and facial expressions to talk to other dogs. These little behaviours are known as calming signals. Calming signals are a fascinating language all of its own, and one every dog caretaker would benefit from understanding. When you learn what to look for, you will see your dog use calming signals not only with other dogs, but also with yourself, other humans, animals and even objects. Dogs understand each other straight away. But they need total freedom, or as close to it as we can get, to express themselves adequately. This is where equipment comes into play. A proper H type harness allows the dog to move with freedom. A long (3 metres or more) smiling leash allows the dog to listen and talk to other dogs without interference from the handler. In dog to dog encounters, any tension on the leash will worry the dog. We may be unknowingly transmitting our insecurities through the leash It is best to hold the leash softly and keep it loose while dogs are close together. Give dogs plenty of space to move around and time to make the encounter stress-free. A smiling leash is important on any occasion, but even more so while dogs are talking to other dogs. P.S.: If you would like to learn the fascinating language of calming signals, we highly recommend the book "On Talking Terms With Dogs - Calming Signals" by Turid Rugaas. #smilingleash #looseleashwalking #harnessesnotcollars #letthemsniff #letthembe #dogs #respect #bekind #turidsway #slowwalk #slowwalking #calmingsignals

03.01.2022 #letthemsniff can apply to cats as well as dogs. Although cats don't have as acute sense of smell as dogs, in comparison to us, a cat's nose is a sensory world... miles from ours. Cats have an amazing sense of smell, especially when compared to us humans. How does this apply to your cat and their behaviour? To cats, with their sensitive noses, smells do matter - make sure the litter box is cleaned daily or twice a day if you have a multi-cat household - clean their litter boxes once a month with soap and water and let them dry out - don't use covered boxes as they trap smells - don't use scented litter as it has perfumes that are repellent or can agitate your cat - be mindful that if you are with your friend and they have a cat or dog that your cat can smell that cat or dog on you. Let them smell your clothing and hands, and be mindful if they hiss when smelling that other cat, don't punish them simply change your clothes - introduce any new item in the house like furniture or even cat scratching posts with catnip to create positive associations and so your can can mark it appropriately by rubbing on it, putting their mark on it, which is a natural behaviour. Unfamiliar smells can upset a cat
