24.01.2022 Snakes are starting to wake up from their long winter rest, and our pets are once again at risk! All snake bites or suspected snake bites in Australia should be... treated as life-threatening. It is vital that you keep your pet calm and as still as possible. Try to limit any movement (including walking) as much as possible and transport them to your nearest veterinary practice immediately, even if they look well. If you are not close to a veterinary clinic and the bite was witnessed to have occurred on a limb, apply a pressure immobilisation bandage to that limb before transporting the animal to a veterinarian. The bandage should cover the entire limb, from the paw to the base of the limb. The pressure bandage should not be applied too tight as to restrict blood flow, but at a similar tightness to what would be applied for a sprained ankle. There is no role for a pressure immobilisation bandage for bites that are not on a limb. The sooner your pet is treated, the better their chances of survival. Symptoms of snake bites include: - Sudden weakness followed by collapse - Vomiting - Laboured breathing - Paralysis, starting with the hind legs - Loss of bladder and bowel control - Shaking or twitching of the muscles - Blood in the urine DO NOT try to catch or kill the snake for ID or for any other purpose DO NOT apply a tourniquet DO NOT wash the bite site DO NOT cut, suck or apply any other treatments to the bite-site Our service is free for all pet owners and has assisted over 5,000 accidentally poisoned pets so far this year. You can save a pets life by keeping this critical service free. Please visit animalpoisons.com.au/support to learn about ways you can support the service.

21.01.2022 Unfortunately in the past two weeks we have seen two confirmed cases of canine parvovirus from the Blacktown area. Parvo is a highly contagious virus that affe...cts puppies and dogs that are unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated. The common symptoms of parvo are: Lethargy Anorexia Vomiting Severe, bloody diarrhoea Fever Weight loss Weakness Depression Dehydration Because parvo is a virus, there is no real cure for it. Treatment is focused on managing the symptoms and preventing secondary bacterial infections. Intensive therapy in hospital provides the best chance for recovery. Parvo is preventable through vaccination. Puppies should receive vaccinations from 6-8 weeks, then boosters at 10-12 weeks, 14-16 weeks and then yearly. #westblacktownvet #vetclinic #parvovirus #parvokills #vaccinateyourdogs

21.01.2022 UPDATE: this little girl has been found. I can never understand why someone would do this

21.01.2022 Sweet natured Timba is an Australian Shepherd and yesterday he had a bath in the protein shampoo. It is a creamy, rich shampoo that really helps the coat to be ...soft and silky. He had a few knots around the neck and pantaloons and they were able to be combed out pretty well after being rinsed with the detangler solution in the water. After his session he was all floofy and cuddlicious. That tail! See more

11.01.2022 As many households prepare their gardens for spring, we have noticed a significant increase in calls to the Animal Poisons Helpline regarding fertiliser ingesti...on. Fertilisers are available in a diverse range of formulations. Inorganic fertilisers tend to contain varying but generally high quantities of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; as well as trace elements which are tailored to suit specific purposes. Whilst a small lick or taste is unlikely to cause significant poisoning, large ingestions can potentially result in severe effects. Organic fertilisers contain lower concentrations of these minerals. They are often made of different types of manures, blood, bone and other meals and as such are highly attractive to dogs. If dogs are allowed access to organic fertiliser packaging, it is not unusual for them to ingest very large quantities. Ingestion of organic fertilisers can result in severe gastroenteritis, possibly pancreatitis and gastrointestinal obstruction. As you prepare your garden for the warmer months ahead, take a moment to consider your pets: Never allow pets access to fertiliser containers or packaging. Keep in mind that dogs find organic fertilisers highly appetizing and will readily chew through packaging, so they need to be stored out of reach. Apply fertiliser as per the manufacturers recommendations (do not use excessive amounts) Water in fertiliser after application where possible - this is especially true for areas with chickens since they are very effective at picking up granules that have dropped to lower soil areas Avoid using organic fertiliser around spring bulbs (dogs will dig up the organic fertiliser and will often find these bulbs and eat them!) If you think your pet has ingested fertiliser, call us on 1300 869 738 (AU) or 0800 869 738 (NZ) for a tailored risk assessment and recommendation, including first aid measures. Our service is free for all pet owners and has assisted over 5,000 accidentally poisoned pets so far this year. You can save a pets life by keeping this critical service free. 03.01.2022 I met Tyson for the first time today when he had his monthly session. Besides being completely adorable, hes a whirl of energy and enthusiasm for life...but no...t so when it was time to get into the bath, which is usually a bit challenging. But today he walked with me as far as the trailer and was very well behaved in the bath. He really enjoyed it and when he was returned to his mum I could tell he was quite liking feeling all clean and fresh and loose hair free! So heres hoping next bath, Tyson goes that little step further and hops in to the bath all on his own. See more
