25.01.2022 Our next cow nominated for the Aussie Red- Cross Bred Cow of the Year is from Brett and Bron Davies of Simpson in South West Victoria. Barley Dew David Bree, sired by RDAVID from a Holstein Dam. Currently on her 5th lactation she has produced 41,841 litres, 1,661kgs Fat and 1,462kgs Protein up until now. Her last completed 305 day lactation produced 734kgs of milk solids. Calving every year to the first round of A.I., shes never had any health issues and is always among the first 10 cows on the platform. Brett says, She is a classic example of the type of cow that we strive to breed every year and why we love the Aussie Reds. She has a BPI of 267 and also has two daughters in the herd. One is sired by VIKRFABER with a BPI of 200, and another sired by VIKRTOKYO with a BPI of 285, the top BPI cow in the herd.

25.01.2022 VIKRTOKYO (Viking Genetics) has maintained his position as the top proven Red sire in Australia (for Australian and International proven sires) following the August ABV release from DataGene this week. With a BPI of 291 he sits ahead of the Norwegian bulls from (ABS) ROEN (252NR11690) BPI 275 and ONSTAD P (252NR11819) BPI 260. In 4th and 5th position are VIKFAABELI and VIKRFROERUP (Viking Genetics) on 252 and 247 BPI. In 6th is the New Zealand Ayrshire bull, NZGSUPASONIC (LIC) followed by OKSJALE P (252NR11229) (ABS), ARBCYGNET (GA), AXBBLACKWOOD (AuzRedXB) and Beaulands Eden (0200AR08166) (Semex)

25.01.2022 The next cow nominated for the Aussie Red- Cross Bred Cow of the Year is from Kaycee Gardiner of Catani in West Gippsland. Her cow, Tango, was purchased as a heifer from Dave and Amanda Martin and is now on her second lactation. Sired by TANGVOLL she is a very solid cow in Kaycees small herd. While there are no official herd testing results, Kaycee confirms that she produces plenty of milk and still has plenty of future potential.

23.01.2022 Australian Red Dairy Breed 2020 National Photo Competition Judge: Ron Graham Class 4: 3- & 4-year-old in Milk Red Cow. Kindly sponsored by AuzredXB.... 62 exhibits entered. 1st Cluain 4238 Mandy, sired by AR Nougat (Graeme and Michele Hamilton) 2nd Redhollow Graphic Hudaida 7174, sired by VR Fonseca (James and Alison Finlayson) 3rd Paco Skjelvan Jackie 194, sired by Skjelvan (Paul Cocksedge) 4th 192, sired by ARB Stejac (Jennifer and Chris Read) 5th Cluain 4211 Empress, sired by V Foske (Graeme and Michele Hamilton) 6th 2345 Moyola Xena 42, sired by VR Uudin (Warren Gallagher) 7th Waikato Maxine 4330, sired by V Foske (Mike Green) 8th Cluain 4494 Princess, sired by AR Nougat (Graeme and Michele Hamilton) 9th 6463, sired by R Fastrup (Brett and Bronwyn Davies) 10th Paco Flame Jackie 228, sired by VR Flame (Paul Cocksedge) 11th Molly, sired by Orraryd (Kaycee Gardiner) 12th 4056, sired by S Valpas (James Greenacre) Comments from Ron: What a super young cow in 1st place! She has a strong top line, good loin, and excellent udder attachment with so much udder capacity. She places over the cow in 2nd because of her dairy strength. But taking nothing away from the cow in 2nd who also has such a well attached udder, an extremely long body and brilliant spring of rib giving her so much capacity. Our 3rd placegetter also has the great body capacity which I really admired in so many entries in the biggest class of the competition. Her dairy strength also really caught my attention and she is another great young cow. In fact, the amount of top quality cows in this class meant that so many good cows missed out on the top 12 places, but I want to reiterate how many fantastic cows were photographed which reinforced in my mind how far the breed has come in such a short time, to produce so many cows of such high quality. Congratulations to Graeme and Michele Hamilton for winning Class 4. Results for Classes 5 and 6 will be released tomorrow.

23.01.2022 Each year the ARDB present a special award to the highest new Aussie Red herd (30 cows or more) ranked on BPI. The award is generously sponsored by Genetics Australia ($100 semen voucher) and Viking Genetics (merchandise gift pack) Our highest ranked new herd last year was Peter Youngs herd, in South Gippsland, Victoria. ... Peter is currently milking 300 cows. He took over the farm in 2007 with a half Holstein herd with the other half made up of Jersey and Jersey/Holstein crosses. He first used some Reds in that year for the Autumn calvers to control cancer on the third eyelid of some of the very white cows. The first heifer born was by Botans, with ARBThatch and ARBJim also used. After having severe calving problems during Spring calving in his Holsteins in the first year, Peter decided to change the breeding to Reds and bought a Krejstad sired bull to put over his heifers. Peter recalls not having to pull any of those calves. He now uses about 70% Red semen on his herd and is maintaining the other 30% of his herd with Jerseys. Peter loves the health traits of the Reds and says they are perfectly suited to his pasture grazing production system. He rates Krejstad as his favourite sire used over the years giving him easy calving, medium sized cows with barrel bodies and good udders. Botans and VFoske were also very successful in Peters herd. Other influential sires used include Klens, BJurist, Peterslund, Solero, Orraryd, Edbo and VIKBalfa. Current bulls being used are VIKBuckarby, VIKRTokyo, VIKRViolin, VIKRVenom and VRHattrick. Peters Aussie Reds already rank as the number 10 BPI herd in Australia and his passion for his cows and attention to detail should see him move quickly up the ranks.

23.01.2022 Hi ARDB Community, We have recently been contacted by a farmer in Western Victoria who is hoping to purchase some Aussie Red animals. They are looking for an Aussie Red bull that will be of working age in November, as well as 10-12 Aussie Red cows in their second lactation or greater that would be calving around late December and January. If there is anyone that might be able to help with this request, or you know someone who could, please get in contact with Wayne Akrigg on 0438 957 703. Thanks everyone, and we hope you are all staying safe and well.

22.01.2022 A few months ago, the Australian Red Dairy Breed (ARDB) welcomed their newest member and new Aussie Red enthusiast, Chris Axford of Glen Burnie Aussie Reds from Korumburra in South Gippsland. Chris showed interest in becoming a member of the ARDB in early 2020, and provided the catalyst for the ARDB to get the Junior Membership program up and running. Chris is our inaugural Junior member, and at 16 years of age, he has made an early start with the purchase of 3 heifers fro...m another new member, Patrick Morgan Jarity Aussie Reds from Yanakie. The reason I bought Aussie Reds was so that we could identify them from the rest of the herd, which are mostly all Holsteins, Chris says. I bought them as a way of investing money that I earned from growing corn. Chriss heifers are due to calve in September and October. Im very excited to see my herd double, Chris says. Chris has now let us know that his first Aussie Red heifer was born on the first weekend of September - congratulations Chris! The Australian Red Dairy Breed is excited to now have the Junior Membership (18 years of age and under) available for our youngest members like Chris. It is very rewarding to watch the next generation of farmers become passionate about Aussie Red cattle. We wish Chris all the best with his growing herd and look forward to seeing how his new heifers perform.

She is clean through the shoulder and oozes dairy strength. My 2nd placegetter has very good thurl placement, a deep body with open ribs, a strong head with such a wide muzzle for grazing. I really admire the parallel legs displayed by my 3rd placegetter, who also has great dairy strength throughout and a lovely wide udder. So many top young cows in this class, who look set to be in our Australian Red herds for many years to come. Congratulations to all the farmers who entered this strong class. Congratulations to Brett and Bronwyn Davies for winning Class 3.

19.01.2022 Another entry for the Aussie Red- Cross Bred Cow of the Year and our second Queensland entry is from Kym and Ashley Harrison of Kilcoy, North West of Brisbane. Barbie 1520 Linkin, sired by Beaulands Linkin knows nothing other than drought, with the Harrison family entering their 5th consecutive season with their district being drought declared. Despite this, Barbie has still been able to display amazing fertility having started her 4th lactation six months before turning five. In tough conditions, last season she produced 624kgs of milk solids in 302 days with an average somatic cell count of just 22 and an 11 month calving interval.

Our 2nd placegetter also has plenty of width, such a high rear udder, and her teat setting is right on plumb. Our 3rd placegetter also has an outstanding top line, she has beautiful width in her udder, plumb teat placement, a strong head and she oozes dairyness. Again, this class consists of another exceptional group of cows which show us all how using Australian Red bulls in a crossbreeding program is delivering tremendous results for so many farmers. Congratulations to Brett and Bronwyn Davies for winning Class 2. Results for Classes 3 and 4 will be released tomorrow.

17.01.2022 To our Victorian ARDB members and friends- Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, weve made the unfortunate decision to cancel this years On Farm Challenge. This was a tough decision to make, but the health and safety of our community is our priority at this time. At this stage, the NSW OFC will still be going ahead.

17.01.2022 The first entry for the ARDB Aussie Red- Cross Bred Cow of the Year comes from Glen, Anne and Kathryn Drury in Tropical, Far North Queensland. The Drurys supply organic milk to markets in Northern Queensland in a biodynamic low input production system under very challenging conditions. Cow 1454 has already started her 5th lactation before turning 6 years old. Sired by ARBIMPULSE, she has an average PI of 111 . She has had all heifer calves, with her first daughter already in the herd with a PI of 103.

15.01.2022 Northern NSW Dairy Farmer, Warren Gallagher values his herd recording information so much, he changed his business to make the most of it. 07.01.2022 The Australian Red Dairy Breed (ARDB) is a major contributor to the cross breeding sector across the country and is also gaining popularity internationally. Its these cross bred cows that rarely get the recognition they deserve. In pasture based and seasonal calving production systems, it is often these Aussie Red sired cross bred cows that are the most profitable in Australian herds with their proven track record for high solids production and unsurpassed health, fertility... and survival. To recognise these cows, the ARDB recently ran an inaugural "Aussie Red- Crossbred Cow of the Year" competition on their Facebook page, asking for nominations from its members. The entries were to be sired by a UU coded bull (this group includes cows sired by Australian Red, Viking Red, Norwegian Red or German Angler bulls) and a first generation cross from another breed. One of the entries from Brett and Bronwyn Davies of Simpson in South West Victoria was a typical example of these crossbred cows. Barley Dew David Bree (pictured), sired by RDAVID from a Holstein Dam. Currently on her 5th lactation she has produced 41,841 litres, 1,661kgs Fat and 1,462kgs Protein up until her latest herd test. Moving from Northern Victoria 5 1/2 years ago with a predominately Holstein herd, Brett and Bronwyn now milk 280 Aussie Red and Aussie Red Cross bred cows with only a handful of Holsteins remaining. They initially tried crossing their Holstein herd with Red in an attempt to improve the health and fertility of the herd realising that one of the major keys to being profitable was having cows in calf that had very few health problems. This has proven to be a resounding success and the Davies were so impressed with their first Aussie Red crosses that theyve now decided to breed their entire herd to Red. Brett and Bronwyn subsequently became more involved in the Australian Red Dairy Breed, signing up as members about 5 years ago. They have thoroughly enjoyed their involvement in the organisation, catching up with like minded breeders around the country at different times. Brett and Bronwyn have been involved in industry extension since moving to Simpson, being selected as a West Vic Dairy Focus Farm from 2016 to 2018 and they are also a current GINFO herd. Brett has now become a director of the Australian Red Dairy Breed overseeing the finance and administration of the organisation.

06.01.2022 Australian Red Dairy Breed 2020 National Photo Competition Judge: Ron Graham Class 1: 2-year-old in Milk Crossbred Cow. Kindly sponsored by ABS.... 16 exhibits entered. 1st 951, sired by V Foske (Jody Boyd) 2nd 6755, sired by VR Fonseca (Brett and Bronwyn Davies) 3rd 4358, sired by Beaulands Eden (Chandler Family) 4th 818, sired by Gopollen (Andrew and Helen Dunbar) 5th 873, sired by Gopollen (Andrew and Helen Dunbar) 6th 2380 Moyola Cora 3, sired by V Foske (Warren Gallagher) 7th 1993, sired by VR Bestman (Will Colbert and Meaghan Douglas) 8th 1953, sired by VR Donato (Will Colbert and Meaghan Douglas) 9th 5232, sired by ARB Scarebear (Scott and Melissa Iddles) 10th 880, sired by Gopollen (Andrew and Helen Dunbar) Comments from Ron: Our first placed cow is an extremely balanced cow and a very worthy winner of this class. She has a tidy udder and good capacity throughout. She has a little more strength in the head than the 2nd placed cow, who is another really nice crossbred cow that I really liked. She placed over the cow in 3rd place because of her superior foreudder attachment, but it was a very close placing. While I was judging this class, when I first looked at the cow in 3rd place, I was sure she was going to win. She has the best feet and legs in this class, with excellent heel depth. She is such a wide cow and has great dairy strength, but in the end she was pipped by the exceptional top 2 placegetters. Congratulations to all the owners of these cows, they are a real credit to your breeding programs. Congratulations to Jody Boyd for winning Class 1.

06.01.2022 Another cow nominated for the Aussie Red- Cross Bred Cow of the Year comes from Paul Cocksedge in South Gippsland, Victoria. So far for this lactation she has produced 656 kgs milk solids in 266 days with a PI of 129. She also held to her first service this season and is due to TOKYO in early August. She already has a rising 4 year old VFOSKE daughter that has a 100% conception rate from 3 matings and her first Granddaughter is due to calve this Spring.

Kindly sponsored by Genetics Australia.... 20 exhibits entered. 1st Cluain 3523 Bess, sired by Beaulands Eden (Graeme and Michele Hamilton) 2nd Waikato Primula 3821, sired by GG Dragomir (Mike Green) 3rd 9655, sired by Beaulands Eden (Jennifer and Chris Read) 4th Waikato Primula 3992, sired by VR Cigar (Mike Green) 5th Redhollow Harmony Bond 1126, sired by Redhollow Hypo St John (Ascona) (James and Alison Finlayson) 6th Paco David Brandy 139, sired by R David (Paul Cocksedge) 7th Cluain 3013 Pet, sired by GG Zober (Graeme and Michele Hamilton) 8th Waikato Princess 3865, sired by V Foske (Mike Green) 9th 256, sired by Peterslund (Andrew and Helen Dunbar) 10th Paco Lex Jackie 134, sired by ARB Lex (Paul Cocksedge) Comments from Ron: Class 6 was an amazing class of mature cows, with a large variety of ages. It was difficult to judge these cows not knowing the age of the cow, as I imagine many of these cows have had more lactations that what they look they have, and it will be interesting for all to know more about these cows when the results are released. Our 1st placegetter blew me away by her body capacity. She is the best bodied cow in the whole competition, with such a wide capacious udder that is obviously holding up extremely well with her high milk production. This milky cow’s udder still sits nicely above her hocks, and she has such a great fore udder attachment. She places over my 2nd placegetter who seems to demonstrate great longevity, this cow is so wedgy or shows great dairyness and has a great strong top line. I really like the constitution of this cow. Our 3rd placegetter is also powerful, with a strong top line and such a brilliant udder with superb teat placement for a mature cow. All the cows in this class have done our breed proud, and every farmer who entered a cow in this class should be commended on how well they look, and the exceptional job that these matriarch cows have done day in day out for many years in their herds. Congratulations to Graeme and Michele Hamilton for winning Class 6. Results for the Overall Champion and the Top Placed Cow sired by a bull from each of the sponsoring companies will be released tomorrow.

03.01.2022 Australian Red Dairy Breed 2020 National Photo Competition Judge: Ron Graham Class 5: 5- & 6-year-old in Milk Red Cow. Kindly sponsored by ABS.... 22 exhibits entered. 1st 3058 Llandovery B-Jurist Lauurel 1557TH, sired by B-Jurist (Andrew and Vanessa Hibberson) 2nd Cluain 4075 Gee, sired by AR Oper (Graeme and Michele Hamilton) 3rd Paco Foske Evie 181, sired by V Foske (Paul Cocksedge) 4th Paco David Georgia 143, sired by R David (Paul Cocksedge) 5th 2202 Moyola Roanbow 35, sired by Tosikko (Warren Gallagher) 6th Glenview GG Hexer 1502, sired by GG Hexer (Glen, Anne and Kathryn Drury) 7th 9788, sired by V Foske (Tim Humphris and Marie Clark) 8th 912, sired by Tosikko (Jody Boyd) 9th Glenview AR Impalu 1555, sired by AR Impalu (Glen, Anne and Kathryn Drury) 10th Glenview AR Linz 1459, sired by AR Linz (Glen, Anne and Kathryn Drury) Comments from Ron: The more I looked at the photograph of the winner of Class 5 the more I liked her! She is such a powerful cow, her front legs are so wide, and she has so much body capacity. Her udder attachment fore and rear is exceptional. Her teat size and placement are both spot on. She stands on a beautiful set of legs, and is simply a tremendous cow. She places over the cow in 2nd because of that superior fore udder attachment, but this 2nd placegetter demonstrates such a powerful head and oozes dairy strength throughout. The 3rd placegetter is another cow with great constitution, she also has a good top line, strong feet and legs and has a very well attached udder. There were so many cows in this class that looked like they were such amazing productive cows that were built with resilience, to be able to withstand the rigours of our tough Australian environment, often in large herds where they have to graze day and night year round without special individualised treatment. Congratulations to Andrew and Vanessa Hibberson for winning Class 5.

02.01.2022 Thanks Scott and Angela Burtt from MacKenzie Valley, Tasmania, for sharing these photos. Scott and Angela are super excited as their herd is achieving a goal to become all Aussie Red. They have made the change to an Aussie Red herd to have efficient pasture-fed cows, that are easy to manage on less grain with lower cell counts and better fertility. All the best as you achieve your goals!

01.01.2022 Well done to Phil Stasiw from Mount Gambier on this cow placing 12th in the 3 to 6 year old cross bred class in the ARDB National Photo Competition. Sired by NYMOEN P, cow 705’s production last season on her first lactation was 628kgs of milk solids with 4.1% fat, 3.5% protein and a PI of 125 in 322 days. So far in the first 32 days of this, her second lactation is producing at 2.7 kgs of milk solids per day. Phil currently milks 325 cows with around 70 being Aussie Red or Aussie Red/Jersey cross. Cow 705 was bred by Phil from a Jersey/Red cross that he originally purchased as a Yearling from Jan Raleigh in Timboon with the Granddam being a daughter of G Edbo that Phil bred whilst sharefarming for Jan.

01.01.2022 Australian Red Dairy Breed 2020 National Photo Competition The results are now in for the National Photo Competition. Over the next few days, we will release the top 10-12 places in each class, with photographs for the top 3 cows, and then announce the Overall Champion. Judge Ron Graham was extremely impressed with the overall quality of cows photographed in this competition. Ron says The Australian Red Breed has come a long way since its inception in the 1980’s. We now have... so many tremendous cows with great commercial type. Cows with excellent udders, very correct feet and legs, and capacious cows, which are essential for walking the long distances that many Australian herds have to track, to efficiently graze and produce quality milk. Ron Graham was not given any details of the owners or sires of the cows when he judged them. Board Members of the Australian Red Breed have collated his placings and endeavoured to accurately list your cows name, sire and photograph. If we have made a mistake, we do ask for your pardon, and would prefer if you could contact Breed Chairman Sam Graham via email on [email protected] with the correct information, and we will endeavour to rectify the mistake promptly.
