25.01.2022 844 kilometers (525 miles) done today!!! from Milwaukee to Sioux falls. Sore hands. Sore neck. Sunburned wrists. But THANKS to my fantastic Airhawk, my little ass is still okay after riding a sportster 883 for more than 7 hours. Tomorrow: STURGIS!!! BIKES EVERYWHERE ALREADY!!
25.01.2022 Longreach to the Gemfields and then home, 3,600km traveled this week through Australia’s outback countryside. Great to spend a bit of time touring through our own beautiful country.I will post a map shortly showing the route we took.
23.01.2022 Greenvale to Hughenden. Well we were pretty happy to of survived the night.... long as it was... Don’t you hate it when the fan goes clunk, clunk, bang all night and your both too tired to drag yourself out of bed and turn it off. There is only 1 small stretch (about 10km) that is single lane bitumen between here and Charters towers. The rest of the road is brilliant. Our good friend Kev joined us at Charters for a run. From Charters we head west, with a lunch stop at Pentland pub and then a stop off to say hello to our old mate at the Prarie pub. Overnight at Hughenden.
22.01.2022 How the world can turn upside down in a short space of time. This time last year we were packing the bikes up ready for our roadtrip to Sturgis. We left Portland, Oregon and headed north in the pouring rain for a night in the historic Mt Rainier National Park Lodge. Our room was the size of a shoebox, but sitting around the giant log fire with a glass of wine was a fine way to end the day. The next day we head to the quaint little Bavarian town of Leavenworth in Washington... State. The streets are lined with Bavarian themed buildings and the restaurant serves up the best roasted ham hocks and sauerkraut! Continuing north we crossed the border into Canada at Osoyoos and followed the Hwy 3 which runs almost parallel to the border. We head north again up through Nakusp, Revelstoke, and Golden. This awesome stretch of road winds its way alongside rivers that are nestled amongst the glorious peaks of the rocky mountains. A few days in Banff then time to head south, where we have an encounter with a grizzly and her two large cubs. Back across the border and we have a few days around Glacier National Park and the magical Going to the sunroad. We have ridden this area several times over the years but never traveled south via Browning, Montana. We enjoy a day soaking in the hot springs at White Sulphur Springs, where the locals tell us about an old deserted ghost town that is nearby. Next day we head down 11 miles of rough dirt road to the abandoned town of Castle. The buildings and history are amazing and well worth the broken coffee cups and dust covered luggage. Another day of great roads heading south and into Livingston, MT, and the northern entrance of Yellowstone NP, before heading up the Beartooth and into Redlodge. (We have ridden through here many times so we didn’t detour south to the Grand Tetons). We have been to Cody several times so gave it a miss as we were running out of days. Down some backroads through Belfry, Badger Basin, and onto the US14A to Lovell. A friend had told me about the beauty of the Bighorn Lake and the Mountains. The detour out along MT37 took us through the Prior Mountain mustang range and we managed to get some brilliant photos at Devils Canyon overlook and Barry’sLanding. Backtracking along MT37 we continued along 14A and are amazed at the countryside opening up before us. We climbed our way up through the mountains and stopped for a quick look at the ancient Medicine wheel. Finally we are nearing Sturgis and drop in for another photo of Devils Tower while we are out this way. Even though we are 3 days before the official start of Sturgis the roads are still filled with all different types of motorcyclists from throughout the world, everyone is friendly and eager to share their journey and adventures they experienced to get to this iconic rally. Sadly none of us Aussies will be making it this year, but I know that this is one year that I would definitely rather stay at home in our beautiful AUSTRALIA. See more
22.01.2022 Our Reef n beef winter tour of North Queensland. We have ridden much of this area many times over the years, but hadn’t been up to Cooktown. We did the trip in a week but I would recommend 2 weeks as there is alot of places to see along the way. The coastline ride from Cairns to Port Douglas is some of the best in NQ. The Atherton tablelands are worth spending a few days in and a visit to the beautiful Paronella park is a must. Two days n Cooktown was plenty, unfortunately ...the museum was closed when we were there. Undarra Caves are great, you can stay in an old rail carriage or cabin and the also have tents for glamping. I highly recommend the bush breakfast in the morning. We skipped Undarra this time and overnighted in Greenvale at the famous (?) Three ways hotel. Charters Towers has alot of historic buildings from its goldrush heydays. Not alot out there between Charters and Hughenden but you must stop in at the Prairie Pub and say hello to Tom and Andrea. Winton is a really nice little town and a great place to overnight and head out to the dinosaur museum. The road from here to Longreach is very long and straight with only the Corfield pub in between. Longreach has the Stockmans hall of fame and the Qantas museum. There is alot to see and do out there to get a taste of the real outback. We skipped alot of the highlghts along the way on this trip, but I have shared some photos of previous trips so you can see them. See more
21.01.2022 This time last year we were winding our way amongst some of the greatest roads you can find. Damnit Covid-19 go away!
20.01.2022 Where is this one? It has some of the purest water on earth as it is only fed by rain and snow melt. You can ride almost completely around the rim of this 2148 ft deep caldera that was formed around 7000 years when the volcano Mt Mazama colapsed. If you are lucky you will see the old man of the lake bobbing around, this is a large log that has been bobbing around in there for over 100 years, because the water is so cold it is extremely slow to decompose. Hint: it is located in southern central Oregon and has a wizard of an island
15.01.2022 Well how’s this for the ultimate Harley accessory? Thought I would take the bike for a quick spin to grab a few groceries, bit of a shock when I went to turn the ignition. Not sure where it is so I was a little nervy on my ride into town wondering if he was going to come slithering out from somewhere
14.01.2022 Cooktown, we have arrived! Ohhh... Captain Cook beat us by about 250 years. The road up here was brilliant, much better than the Bruce Hwy! Place hasn’t changed much since I was last here 50 years ago (I was VERY young when I last visited). Paid a visit to my Great Uncle Bill, he hadn’t moved far since I last saw him, he used to live next door to the cemetary.
14.01.2022 Just love these mountains. Who knows where this place is? Do you know the name of the old barn? Hint: They are absolutly Grand!
13.01.2022 One of my favourite roads to ride. Can you guess this one? Hint: the sun was in front of us.
12.01.2022 Time to say goodbye to Cooktown and head down south. The road is fantastic, a mixture of many corners, some straights, undulating land, and mountain ranges. Down through the Atherton Tablelands. We were going to pull up for the night at Mt Garnet but pushed on to Greenvale. Make sure you ring ahead and check accomodation availability in these small towns. The road is fantastic and very little traffic. Two lanes of bitumen all the way to Greenvale. We have stayed at Undarra caves previously, so gave it a miss this time.
11.01.2022 Well America is out for the year, but winter is the perfect time to plan a ride to the Whitsundays and perhaps indulge in a little bit of fishing in our beautiful Whitsundays . Let me know if you need somewhere to store your bike while your out fishing.
11.01.2022 A little footage that reminds us why you don’t try and pat that cute little baby bison. This was yesterday in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
10.01.2022 One of my favourite roads around Sturgis. Needles. #sturgis #sturgisrally #needleshighway #harleydavidson #indianmotorcycle
10.01.2022 The road from Hughenden to Longreach (via Winton) is a looonnggg straight one. Winton is a great little town to drop into and they have the Age of Dinosaur museum about 24km out of town. There is also the Waltzing Matilda centre that is in the main street of town. Unfortunately this burt down several years ago but they have rebuilt it and are slowly putting together an awesome display of memorabilia. Longreach is worth spending a couple of days in as there is the Stockmans hall of fame and the Qantas foundation museum.
09.01.2022 We have been on the road the last few days traveling up to Cooktown in far Nth Queensland. The weather is amazing up here at this time of year! I must say the road is so much better than when I last traveled up here with my parents over 50 years ago to visit my great uncle. Over the next couple of days we will head back down the Savanah Way, past Undara Caves, then down to Charters Towers (bikes don’t like the 80odd Km from Lynd to Hughenden) and then out to Longreach and back home via the Gem fields.
07.01.2022 Another one to add to your bucket list for when the world gets a little better. Daytona bike week showcases thousands of customised bikes. Any wonder America can’t control Covid
06.01.2022 Sad to hear of the passing of BRUM. Many people shared their journey through America with Neale and his crew.
05.01.2022 A great road to ride and one that needs to be on your bucket list. Unfortunately I don’t think any of us will be riding it this year.
