25.01.2022 Incredible Thank you The Lottery Office!

25.01.2022 Our cafe Chances Cafe is now serving a full breakfast menu Head over and check the page out for opening times etc. Thank you for your support in allowing us to employ people who are experiencing homelessness.

24.01.2022 Once again, our crisis accommodation funds are running low. We are actively seeking funding for this, however in the mean time if you are able to help donate a room, please do. We have had 13 referrals this week so far, and it's only Wednesday! It's also getting much harder to get people into hotels and motels without ID, and many places are refusing company/charity bookings. We are working on a solution

24.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago this note made our day at the Cafe. This person is working so hard and was in a much better position, however they have now through no fault of their own found themselves thrown back into homelessness. We would love to be able to help them for a night or two as they have been rough sleeping and are in need of respite and recharge. Can you help male this happen by donating a room for the night or by providing a quarter or half contribution? Thank you https://www.austreetaid.org/collections/donateitem

23.01.2022 ASAP is now taking registrations of interest for our volunteer drive. We are so grateful for each & every person that has volunteered in some way. Now with Chances Cafe up and running and other programs & events in the pipeline, as well as our Outreach we are in need of volunteers for a range roles & positions. Email our development Director Shelley Wyles [email protected] for a volunteer application form or message us on face

22.01.2022 *Accommodation Request* We have several people in need and NO funding for accommodation. One gentleman in particular is in great need and we would really like to help him if possible. We have exhausted every option in town with no luck. This gentleman has physical and mental disabilities and is very scared of his recent nights on the streets. He is also very vulnerable due to his mental and physical impairments. As always we ask that you don't spend what you cannot afford, but we have also given more affordable accommodation options on our website. You can now contribute 1/4 or 1/2 price towards a room for a person experiencing homelessness. We thank you for your help and support #homelessness #charity #roughsleeping #Accommodation #mackay #homelesspeoplematter #homelessnothopeless #kindness #randomactsofkindness

22.01.2022 This is just absolutely heart wrenching for all involved

20.01.2022 Our CEO Kayleigh has a chat with Jarryd and Jodie on their amazing Homemade Heroes podcast. Listen to find out more about who we are, what we do, why we do it and how you can help! Thank you Jarryd and Jodie for this opportunity to spread the word about ASAP, Chances Cafe & Chances Furniture & Op Shop and delve into some of the complexities of homelessness. 18.01.2022 We want to tell you a little story, and this is just one of many that we have here at ASAP. Some are heart breaking, and some are heart warming. This one is thankfully heart warming. We have been working with a lovely gentleman for a while now, as we do many here in Mackay. This gentleman presented to us with severe anxiety. He would stutter while he spoke and never gave eye contact. In his assessment it was discovered that he had been rough sleeping for a long time, was fac...ing severe grief, did not have drug or alcohol problems and hadn't had a mental health assessment before. In fact, he was very reluctant to the idea of it due to the stigma that surrounds mental health concerns, and a fear of medication. He was too fearful of staying in a shelter due to suffering from such severe social anxiety. This man has been into Chances Cafe almost every day since we opened. We have provided him with relief accommodation (thanks to your generosity) a couple of times, and daily meals through our Pay It Forward scheme (again, thanks to you, Mackay). We have noticed a huge improvement in his confidence in the cafe. He now gives eye contact, smiles and stops for a chat with several of our employees. Today, for the first time, this gentleman agreed to enter a hostel. Finally, his confidence and trust in people had improved enough for him to accept help from a wonderful service here in Mackay. We largely put this down to the relationships he has been able to form with us. Whats more, he has agreed to see a GP for a mental health care plan, and to also see a counsellor. Our point is, every single person is worth fighting for. They deserve our patience, our kindness and our guidance even when they don't appear to be wanting it very much. With time and care we can help to improve the lives of people who others deem a lost cause. We will always have time and patience for our homeless friends, no matter how long they might need, because homeless does NOT mean hopeless. *This story has been shared with the permission of this client, and we have respected his wishes of not personally identifying him

18.01.2022 Scott is such an inspirational, brave man.

18.01.2022 OCTOBER BABIES - we need your help We do a lot for our homeless friends... - Street Kits & swags - Medical appointments - Meals and food packs... - Employment opportunities in Chances Cafe - Referral pathways - Crisis/relief accommodation We simply can not do any of it without YOU. 18.01.2022 Our wonderful team of volunteers have worked in the heat all day today with our development director Shelley Wyles in order to raise much needed crisis accommodation funds. We can't thank everyone enough for turning up and working so hard. It is greatly appreciated by not only us, but by the people who these funds will directly help out. You are all INCREDIBLE PEOPLE Thank you to Bunnings Paget for allowing us to host a sausage sizzle, and to Anya for all of your hard work and help.

17.01.2022 Can you help? We are seeking a rental property for three young people who have been experiencing homelessness due to no fault of their own. They have been through a lot together and do not want to separate. These young people have been staying in our share house (Chances Cafe employees house) for a while and we absolutely can not fault them. They have not only followed every one of our strict rules, but have kept the place 100% immaculate. I personally would put these young people into my own property in a heart beat. We require a 2 or 3 bedroom unit, preferably close to town. These young people are so deserving of a chance for stability and safety If you have a rental available and want to not only make a differencre, but also ensure that your property is cared for and respected then please get in touch with us.

15.01.2022 Great little video. Mick represents most people we meet on the street.. friendly, grounded and up for a chat.

14.01.2022 Todd & Magnus They say a dog is a man's best friend and these two are evidence of that. Todd and Magnus have been experiencing homelessness in Mackay since October last year. Despite being offered a position in the men's shelter, Todd remains rough sleeping so that he does not have to give up his best friend, Magnus. Now that is loyalty! Magnus repays Todd by keeping him safe at night and being his protector. You can see from his beautiful shiny coat that Magnus is wel...l looked after, despite Todd having lost a lot of weight in recent months. We are honoured to be able to offer Todd and Magnus a pet friendly motel room until Monday. Todd also has a trial at Chances Cafe on Saturday where no doubt Magnus will be waiting patiently for him to finish If you are in a position to help offer Todd and Magnus a nights accommodation then please visit our website and gift a room. https://www.asap-co.com.au/gift-a-room.html#/ See more

14.01.2022 For those with access to the Daily Mercury this is an informative article with St. Vinnies highlighting the current homelessness situation in Mackay. 700 people currently facing homelessness in the region 0.7% rental vacancy with only a small handful in the affordability bracket for those on pension Homelessness is not limited to people with lower income with a wide demographic of people currently in tents, motels, rough sleeping, sleeping in cars

12.01.2022 Our friends at the Mackay shelters are at full capacity again. We have already had such an influx of requests for assistance this week and are gearing up for a big weekend. If you can help, please do! From single males to mothers and children, homelessness does not discriminate and we hate having to turn people away when we are usually their last resort. Thank you

11.01.2022 This morning we had the assistance of the loyal Nova, and she loved being a volunteer with us. Plenty of pats and kisses were exchanged She has decided to take on the role of Homelessness Outreach Services Dog. A huge thank you to every person who donated a room for the night this week. Not only were we able to assist the two people in need, but we now have funding for more people when the need arises. You are all INCREDIBLE.

11.01.2022 We are very pleased to announce that the amazing Mackay Community Foundation have generously donated $10,000 towards medical care for people who are experiencing homelessness. Alongside another generous donation we recently received from Queensland Xray, this means we can now commence assisting those who are homeless with much needed care such as GP visits and transportation, ophthalmology, basic dentistry and filling scripts. In Mackay, bulk billing is not common and it is ...almost always at the discretion of the GP which means that a lot of people prolong or go without medical care. This in turn results in many complications. It also puts extra pressure on our ED Department which is at most times at capacity. Already we have been able to assist two clients in desperate need - one who has been sleeping rough whilst having severe sight problems (you can only imagine how scary this would be). We sincerely thank Mackay Community Foundation and Queensland Xray for their generosity and for allowing us to make this happen! You truly are making a huge difference in the lives of people who are very vulnerable. See more

09.01.2022 Sadly, one of our homeless friends recently had a backpack stolen as he slept rough in the Botanic Gardens area of Mackay. This backpack contained many important items - photos of his children, his only clothing items, identification and more. He has been distraught beyond words about this. It's a long shot, but if anyone has seen any items laying around the West Mackay area please let us know. We will of course replace what we can, but some of these were irreplaceable

09.01.2022 We are in desperate need of accommodation for several people. If you can help, please do via the following link https://www.austreetaid.org/collections/donateitem

08.01.2022 We have had two accommodation assistance requests in the last hour but yesterday used the last of our crisis/relief accommodation funding. One single male One single male with dog If you are in a position to donate, we would love to be able to fulfill these requests. Both are asking us as a last resort and have exhausted other options. https://www.asap-co.com.au/gift-a-room.html#/... Thank you to all those who have donated recently See more

08.01.2022 Hi Facebook, We have had a call this afternoon from a woman who is seeking relief accommodation. She has been sleeping rough in Mackay CBD area for a few days and is in need of relief for a night or two. Our crisis accommodation fund is dry, and we aim to get her a tent and street kit by the morning, but if anyone is able to help by donating a room for the night, she would be very grateful. As always we ask that you don't put yourself out and only donate if you are in a goo...d position to do so without affecting your own financial situation. Thank you https://www.asap-co.com.au/gift-a-room.html#/

08.01.2022 Hi Mackay We have so many people in need of accommodation today - from families of 3 or 4, singles and even a lady in her 70s who is receiving hospital treatment. Can you help donate a night's accommodation? https://www.austreetaid.org/collections/donateitem Thank you so very much

07.01.2022 The impact is yet to be felt at it's fullest, with government set to reduce the covid supplement by 50% at the end of this month, and then completely remove it by December. We can only hope it is extended soon. For those on disability support payments, there has been no increase in payments at all during this pandemic, besides a small one off supplement. Crisis housing is top on our list of priorities, and we are working hard to raise the money needed to support people who a...lready are in a desperate situation. Every donation helps us. Every birthday fundraiser, every purchase from Chances Cafe. None of your help goes unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank you for caring https://youtu.be/zi3V1D35Dwc

07.01.2022 Thank you Mackay

07.01.2022 $1338.44 - that's the amount we have spent on crisis/relief accommodation in the last 7 days. These are people who literally have no other option, usually referred to us only as a last resort. This doesnt include food and transport costs either. This is a lot of money for a small charity with no government assistance. Our crisis accommodation fund is now empty, and don't worry we are looking for ways to raise funds. For now, though, we simply have to say no until we can fill... the bucket a little more. This breaks our heart of course, and we will do our best to provide swags/sleeping bags to people. In the meantime we would like to thank those who donated to this fund throughout the week. It's been a huge week that's for sure, and your contribution made all the difference. Again, if you can help at all: https://www.asap-co.com.au/gift-a-room.html#/ Thank you See more

06.01.2022 With the opening of Chances Cafe recently, our small team has been swamped and not able to do as much outreach work as we would have liked. We also have not had time to get to our volunteer applications which is now a priority for us. This weekend we will be hitting the streets to offer meals, swags and care kits to those in need, thanks to the following wonderful wonderful people who have recently donated... Louise Mackay Claudia Summers of The Chef Sisters Maggie Bell... Bronwyn Merrick Anouska Lyons Maxi Ramsay Karen Preisig Lesley Duffy And a very generous mystery donor Thank you to each and every one of you. We would also like to thank all those who have done birthday fundraisers recently, your support is phenomenal. We unfortunately are not notified of the fundraisers and do not receive details so please tag us when you do See more

06.01.2022 It's been a little cold outside lately and it's only going to get colder. We have an elderly indigenous gentleman who comes in to Chances Cafe regularly. He is so humble, kind and appreciative of any assistance we can offer. This man has been homeless for a while now yet he hasn't let it grind him down - and that takes a strong and grateful person. He is working very hard to gain employment and may have an opportunity coming up on a farm in a few weeks which he is very e...xcited about. We truly hope this is the beginning of a new journey for him. In the meantime, we would love to be able to put him into accommodation for a few days to give him some relief from the streets and a chance to relax and recharge his batteries. We were able to do this a short while ago and he was so happy and thanked us every day for a week. If you would like to donate a night (and are in a position to do so), please visit the link below. https://www.austreetaid.org//donateitem/products/crisis-ac Thank you for your kindness

02.01.2022 Update: THANK YOU to each and every person who has contributed! Together as a community you have gifted 34 nights of accommodation to this family. This kindness gives them some room to breathe and much needed time to work out a longer term solution. They are so thankful for your help in this time of need. Please note that as of 8pm all donations made will be used in our general pool to help the many other locals experiencing homelessness. Please, if you were thinking of mak...ing a donation don't let this stop you. We have people presenting in need on a daily basis - in fact we have between 4 and 12 new people per day. All donations between when this post was uploaded and 8pm tonight will go directly to assisting the family mentioned below. Again, thank you so much for your compassion and generosity. What an incredible community we have Hi all, we are trying to find funds to assist a local Mackay family with a young child who have had no choice but to sleep in their vehicle for a while now and fingers crossed have a better option lined up tomorrow. We were able to assist last night but are struggling to find funds for tonight. Can anyone assist with a nights accommodation (or contribution towards this)? If so, please use the link below. https://www.austreetaid.org/collections/donateitem *image is used to extend reach of this post and does not depict their actual vehicle

01.01.2022 Father of three says the notion of people starving in Australia due to poverty was very foreign to him until he experienced it himself. Hungry tonight 8:30pm on SBS.

01.01.2022 Please get on board and help us to raise much needed funds! Thanks Chances Cafe team
