When the new syllabus is released in November 2021, the AMEB will hold supporting workshops and events for string teachers. AUSTA looks forward to welcoming the AMEB to the (postponed) AUSTA National Conference in July 2022.

15.01.2022 ONLINE ZOOM EVENT THIS SATURDAY! "Understanding the Score; How a Historical Teaching method, 'Partimenti', can unlock both Freedom and Form in 21st Century Teaching and Performing Practises. " ACT, NSW, TAS, VIC: 2.30pm... QLD: 1.30pm NT: 1.00 pm SA: 2.00pm WA: 11.30am AUSTA Members: $15.00 Non-Members: $25.00 Hosted by our friends from AUSTA SA. Tickets here: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=679847 Session Description: As an upper string player, I have often observed in myself a lack of thorough awareness of the harmonic grounding of the repertoire I’m playing. Conversely, I have also often observed in my lower string playing colleagues a reticence to explore more melodic freedom. In this session I will discuss my attempts to address this imbalance through an exploration of a historical teaching method called ‘Partimenti’. Partimenti was one of the primary compositional teaching methods used for much of the 17th - 19th centuries to assist students to develop high levels of musical understanding and fluency, and provide clarity in areas including harmony, voice-leading, melodic variation, and musical form and structure. This method, forgotten until very recently owing to its aural nature, is as relevant today as it was in the 18th century. Although historically a keyboard method, I have developed techniques for adapting the Partimenti ideas and concepts into string performance and pedagogy, allowing me to explore musical analysis, composition and performance with far more depth and freedom than ever before. Simone began her formal violin studies at the University of Adelaide Elder Conservatorium of Music, before moving to Melbourne to study at the prestigious Australian National Academy of Music. She is the recipient of awards from the Kevin Taylor Legacy, the Ian Potter Cultural Trust, the Thomas Elder Overseas Fund, and the Elder Conservatorium of Music. Simone is a 2019 Churchill Fellow and recently completed PhD studies at the University of Adelaide with a Dean’s Commendation. Her performances have been reviewed as ‘virtuosic’ and ‘infinitely expressive’. Share the event with your friends! https://www.facebook.com/events/1795108663979840

13.01.2022 Its time to be heard, and tell Parliament how COVID-19 has impacted you! To say that arts, media and entertainment has taken a hammering from COVID-19 is an understatement. A Senate Committee inquiring into Federal Governments response to COVID-19 needs to hear from workers in the arts and entertainment about how the public health restrictions have impacted on our industries.... These two industries were among the first and hardest hit, with tens of thousands of workers ineligible for JobKeeper and no sign of a rescue package from the government. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that between March 14 and April 18 the industries which lost the most jobs were accommodation and food services (-33.4%) and arts and recreation services (-27%). This was against an overall loss of 7.5% of jobs across all sectors in the economy. Wages for employees in arts and recreation also decreased by 17.4% over the same five-week period. The ABS data builds on the desperate picture presented in April, when it reported that the arts and recreation sector had only 47% of businesses still trading. It is likely the situation has worsened since that report was released. Last week, the iconic Sydney visual art and performance space Carriageworks was placed in voluntary administration - and the fear is this is the first of many such cases. How have you been impacted by COVID-19? Tell your story by making a short submission to the Senate inquiry. Send your submission to [email protected], but act fast as submissions close on May 28. (This important notice comes via the Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance. You can follow them here: MEAA)
