25.01.2022 With the resumption of domestic travel firmly on the National Coalitions agenda, airline and airport representatives have come together to work on nationally-consistent policies and protocols that will enable safe air travel in the COVID-19 and post-pandemic environment. The Australian Airports Association (AAA) and Airlines for Australia & New Zealand (A4ANZ), convened the Australian Aviation Recovery Coalition, with representatives of airports and airlines all participati...ng in its inaugural meeting last week. The AAAs A/CEO Simon Bourke said, The aviation industry was one of the first and hardest hit as a result of unprecedented but necessary travel restrictions. As these restrictions are eased in line with the Governments three step framework, the safe resumption of domestic travel is a goal shared by all in the travel and tourism sectors. 23.01.2022 The AAA has welcomed the extension of the JobKeeper program to the end of March 2021 saying it will help support thousands of essential aviation positions. Aviation was one of the first sectors to be significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and will be one of the last to fully recover, AAA Chief Executive James Goodwin said. There has been a significant decline in aircraft and passenger movements over the past six months, but despite this, airports have remained ope...n to allow repatriation flights and for essential freight and medical flights, he added. However, some regional airports that are operated by local councils are ineligible for JobKeeper and they still need support. Mr Goodwin said: The airport sector is disappointed that in revising the eligibility criteria, the Government has missed an opportunity to extend JobKeeper to hundreds of skilled airport workers in regional communities. 21.01.2022 Building a new aerodrome is never easy but spare a thought for the unique challenges facing a world-first project to build Australias most remote paved runway in the pristine environment of Antarctica. Just the delivery of materials and infrastructure to build a proposed 2700m runway at Davis research station in East Antarctica is expected to take place over many years and require a combination of a large icebreaker and ice-strengthened freighters. This would include the tra...nsport of some 11,500 pre-cast concrete pavers made in Australia and weighing about 10 tonnes each. The concept is to transfer the 220mm thick, 5m-by-3m pavers from cargo ships to barges, transport them to the aerodrome site on trailers and lift them into position using cranes. 18.01.2022 Yesterdays announcement of further job losses and cuts to long-haul international routes by Virgin Australia highlights the need for the Government to develop a recovery strategy for the aviation industry as the economy adapts to COVID-19. Our thoughts are with those affected by Virgin Australias announcement, AAA Chief Executive James Goodwin said. There are few industries hit harder by the pandemic than aviation and this is another blow for the sector, he said.... There is deep concern amongst the airport sector at the flow-on impact of the significant job losses and service reductions outlined by Virgin Australia, This highlights the need for the Government to develop an aviation industry recovery strategy as the economy adapts to COVID-19. 14.01.2022 A move by Canberra Airport to capitalise on the ACT’s strong record of suppressing the coronavirus has paid off with a cluster of new services by smaller airlines. The strategy was designed to cater for pent-up leisure demand from Canberrans as borders opened thanks to the city’s good COVID record. Beach escapes include destinations such as Port Macquarie and Ballina-Byron Bay in NSW as well as Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and Cairns.... The Alliance Airlines twice-weekly Fokker 100 flights to the Sunshine Coast are a first for Canberra Airport and the hope is they will continue beyond the pandemic. Canberrans will also be able to fly direct to Hobart for the first time since 2013 when Link Airways commences operations. 14.01.2022 Today AAA CEO James Goodwin represented the airport sector at a Parliamentary Inquiry into the Federal Governments handling of COVID-19. James told the committee Australias airports have been good corporate citizens during this pandemic by keeping runways and terminals open to support the movement of people, including health workers and military personnel. Airports have also kept open essential freight supply chain but all of this has come at a significant cost to the s...ector. He provided evidence to the Senate that the lack of direct government support for airports during this period means there is a growing risk airports will need to cut services, operating hours or close on certain days unless there is financial support.
13.01.2022 The same technology that had already begun playing an important role in alleviating passenger congestion at airports prior to the unprecedented COVID-19 traffic slump is poised to be equally valuable as the industry emerges from lock-down into a new normal. 11.01.2022 Sydney Airport is keen to take on a critical role in getting Australias shell-shocked tourism industry moving again with what chief executive Geoff Culbert describes as a sustainable and scalable strategy. The nations busiest airport moved quickly to protect its workers and balance sheet as government travel restrictions due to the coronavirus demolished 98 percent of its passenger traffic. It had been hoping COVID-19 would follow the track of the 2002 SARS outbreak that ...saw a 25 percent fall in total traffic over three months. But it soon became evident the industry was facing an unprecedented catastrophe, a fact underscored recently by new International Air Transport Association figures showing airlines expect to lose a record $US84.3 billion in 2000. 08.01.2022 The biggest Australian solar power array of its type is set to be completed at Melbourne Airport by the middle of next month and will further boost the airports environmental credentials when it fires up. 07.01.2022 With the nation desperate to limit the economic damage from COVID-19, Perth Airport has been working hard to keep essential resource industries operating smoothly in its vast home state. 06.01.2022 An operational mix that includes emergency services flights has helped buffer Essendon Fields against the coronavirus crisis and now the airport is returning the favour with a campaign acknowledging its airborne heroes. 02.01.2022 For Whitsunday Coast Airport, the coronavirus pandemic has been a case of being deserted one day, flat out the next. The airport serving one of Queensland’s premier tourist spots has shot from zero flights in mid-June to 23 flights a week from Brisbane from October 24. Subject to border closures, it also has three flights a week due to start operating from Sydney on November 1 and expects to quickly get back to pre-COVID levels of 10 a week.... To put that into context, pre-COVID we were 24 flights per week, so this is two flights more than we had pre-COVID,’’ says Whitsunday Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer Aviation and Tourism Craig Turner. We have flights locked and loaded out of Melbourne once they get themselves organised and we’re in strong conversation with Adelaide about three flights a week. 01.01.2022 Virgin Australia still sees a long-term future for its regional operations and is looking for alternative ways of servicing airports affected by its decision to axe ATR turboprops as part of its wider restructuring. That was some of the solace that could be taken from the Virgin Groups grim announcement that it would add to the 6000 job cuts already announced by Qantas by shedding 3000 staff as part of restructure that will also see the groups international services shelved... for the immediate future. The staff cuts provoked a strong reaction from an industry already reeling from a precipitous fall in passengers and profits, including a call from the Australian Airports Association for a government-backed aviation industry recovery strategy amid worries about flow-on impact of the Virgin cuts. The restructuring will see the airline, which went into administration in April with $6.8 billion in debts, suspend long-haul operations and simplify its fleet by removing ATRs, Boeing 777s, Airbus A330s and Tigerair Australia Airbus A320s.
