12.01.2022 ONLINE ZOOM EVENT THIS SATURDAY! "Understanding the Score; How a Historical Teaching method, 'Partimenti', can unlock both Freedom and Form in 21st Century Teaching and Performing Practises. " ACT, NSW, TAS, VIC: 2.30pm... QLD: 1.30pm NT: 1.00 pm SA: 2.00pm WA: 11.30am AUSTA Members: $15.00 Non-Members: $25.00 Tickets here: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=679847 Session Description: As an upper string player, I have often observed in myself a lack of thorough awareness of the harmonic grounding of the repertoire I’m playing. Conversely, I have also often observed in my lower string playing colleagues a reticence to explore more melodic freedom. In this session I will discuss my attempts to address this imbalance through an exploration of a historical teaching method called ‘Partimenti’. Partimenti was one of the primary compositional teaching methods used for much of the 17th - 19th centuries to assist students to develop high levels of musical understanding and fluency, and provide clarity in areas including harmony, voice-leading, melodic variation, and musical form and structure. This method, forgotten until very recently owing to its aural nature, is as relevant today as it was in the 18th century. Although historically a keyboard method, I have developed techniques for adapting the Partimenti ideas and concepts into string performance and pedagogy, allowing me to explore musical analysis, composition and performance with far more depth and freedom than ever before. About Simone Slattery: Australian violinist Simone Slattery is one of the country’s most versatile young musicians and performers, with a passion for music from a wide range of eras. Simone has appeared as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician throughout Australia and overseas, and regularly performs with ensembles including the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Antipodies, and the Australian Haydn Ensemble. Simone began her formal violin studies at the University of Adelaide Elder Conservatorium of Music, before moving to Melbourne to study at the prestigious Australian National Academy of Music. She is the recipient of awards from the Kevin Taylor Legacy, the Ian Potter Cultural Trust, the Thomas Elder Overseas Fund, and the Elder Conservatorium of Music. Simone is a 2019 Churchill Fellow and recently completed PhD studies at the University of Adelaide with a Dean’s Commendation. Her performances have been reviewed as ‘virtuosic’ and ‘infinitely expressive’. Share the event with your friends! https://www.facebook.com/events/1795108663979840

10.01.2022 *Some news re: new AMEB Violin Syllabus* The launch of the new AMEB Violin Syllabus has been postponed to November 2021. This difficult decision was made due to the constantly evolving COVID circumstances around the country and inability to be able to hold launch events. When the new syllabus is released in November 2021, the AMEB will hold supporting workshops and events for string teachers. AUSTA looks forward to welcoming the AMEB to the (postponed) AUSTA National Conference in July 2022.
