20.01.2022 Congratulations to ACS Tasmania members Andrew Quaile, Joshua Lamont ACS, Gerard Wood and Nick Hayward who picked up Awards at tonight’s Vic/Tas Awards for Cinematography. Andrew won Silver in the highly competitive Corporate Branding and Advertising category for his cinematography on Josef Chromy Chef. Andrew has won a number of Awards in recent years and continues to produce great work from his Launceston base at Ideas Banq. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUDaxxdlBIA&fe...ature=youtu.be In the same category Josh Lamont won Gold for his work on Defiance. Rewarded. This campaign, promoting the Tasmanian wine industry, was shot just prior to Covid. What a great month it’s been for Josh gaining ACS Accreditation and now receiving yet another Gold Award. https://vimeo.com/410019307 In the Corporate Branded Content, Educational and Events category Gerard Wood won Silver for Keystone for RED KOMODO. Many of us met Gerard at our AGM when he demonstrated the Laowa Macro Probe lens. Gerard used that lens to help achieve some amazing shots in this award winning work, promoting Ignite Digi’s new rig for the 6K RED KOMODO camera. https://youtu.be/LobV-Ufx-no Finally, Nick Hayward picked up his Award in the Nature and Wildlife Category. Along with Simon Plowright Nick has been forging a wonderful career in this genre. This Silver Award was for a film he shot called Cute Little Killers. A Numbat called Lena is the star of this film! Nick and Simon have a wildlife documentary screening on ABC TV soon. From what we hear Quolls will be another fabulous film. Can’t wait to see it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybiC7uQCNu8 The Vic/Tas Awards for Cinematography were held virtually, and streamed online tonight. A list of winners in all categories can be seen here, along with links to our Tassie winners work. With a record number of entries (233) across 23 Categories it made judging (also done via streaming) a very challenging process and to win any award in these circumstances is a mighty achievement.

18.01.2022 How the landscape of who’s in the crew has changed from last century! It’s been a long time coming keep going! The more inclusive and diverse your team, the s...tronger you become because everyone is invested, heart and soul. And that matters. The way we frame the story makes a difference for the audience, and part of our story is who we choose to have on the ground with us. I always tell my students this quote: Act as if what you do makes a difference. 12.01.2022 Thanks to Zoe White ACS, Mark Wareham ACS, Sissy Reyes, Toby Petch, Ben Allan ACS, Arri Australia, Taste Creative & Bus Stop Films and all others who posted to ...#whoisinyourcrew this week. Some very thoughtful words accompanied these images, so sharing those too. The last week of the campaign is coming up so please share more images with us, so we can repost them next Sunday! We are honoured that our friends at Imago featured the campaign on their website, hopefully we might see some posts from other parts of the globe soon! Pic 1: Zoe White ACS @zoewhite @lara.aqel Pic 2:@thanalee_@paulinegefin @rachelbatashvili @devon_catucci @meredithbugden Pic 3: Mark Wareham ACS @markbwareham @bekhawkey @johnplattphotos Pic 4: Mystery Road Series 1 Camera crew: @twalshcamera @muzzaj Pic 5 & 6: Sissy Reyes @sissy_reyes @velindawardell @bobby_lieeee Diversity now and always. If storytelling is the way in which we represent ourselves and our world, well it goes without say that we need diverse storytellers to be complete as people. We are all part of the picture. And how much richer will that picture become when we can all share in the making of it, together. Pic 7: Toby Petch @tobypetch @emmaelias__ As department heads we need to influence change in the people we are working with, encouraging the training required to input diversity through the full range of the crew. Training new people is a commitment, it requires time, patience and understanding. The choices made as to who is trained, when and why are in our hands. These are decisions that need to be made carefully if we want change, as change will never come without our conscious devotion towards it. Pic 8: Ben Allan ACS @benallanacs @velindawardell @nicdaleydp Supporting diversity in our industry is more than just hiring diversely. It’s also about giving people opportunities to progress their careers and supporting them as they forge their own path. These are two photos of Velinda Wardell ACS in my crew, 20 years apart. The first is in 1998 testing the new @kodak_shootfilm 800T neg stock and the other is camera operating for me on a job in 2018. In between she earned a Masters degree in #cinematography from @aftrs became National Secretary of @austcine and the 6th woman ever to receive her ACS letters. She is also a friend, mentor and inspiration to countless young female cinematographers around the world. Today you can see her work camera operating in the crew of Academy Award Winner @ddbeebe on @iamwomanmovie shot on the @arri_rental #Alexa65 Nicola Daley @nicdaleydp stood out to me as soon as I met her when she was a rental prep technician at @lemac_australia The first of these photos was taken when a newly freelance Nicola was camera operating for me on the short film la Palabra in 2002. Her sense of composition was then and still is exceptional. The second photo was taken 12 years later, the day after she became the 8th woman in history to ever receive the ACS letters. If people ever question the value of the push for gender equality I would point to Nicola, who in recent years has started to get work more in line with her talent and professionalism. This has included the TV series Harlots The Letdown Paradise Lost and Domina, the feature film Pin Cushion and documentary biopic of Manolo Blahnik The Boy Who Made Shoes For Lizards. She has been admitted to the illustrious ranks of @bafta and @theacademy - none of which has surprised me but I know that if she had been a man with the same talent, the opportunities would not have taken so long to come around. Very proud to know her and to have occasionally helped her along the way. 12.01.2022 As cinematographers we have the power to employ our crews. I believe that we have to be proactive and include at least 50% women in the camera department. On my... last production there were 4 women in a crew of 7, and one of the men was indigenous. It makes for a better and more balanced working environment and also a far better representation of the world we live in. The challenge now is to enable these women to move through the camera department and to be given the same opportunities as the men. 10.01.2022 The Camera Workforce Census 2021 is a world first research in the history of cinematography that will allow us to get a greater snapshot of the career pathways ...and overall working experiences of all camera crew professionals, so we can better inform policy and practice for the ACS and provide urgent insights into the important roles camera professionals play in the Australian screen sector. The census is led by an outstanding team of academics and researchers at Deakins University in partnership with the ACS and your participation is completely voluntary, anonymous, and confidential. The ACS will not have access to any of the individual responses or raw data. This is research with real impact and it only counts if all of our voices and input are taken into account. We invite you to have your say and let’s frame the future of cinematography together. https://researchsurveys.deakin.edu.au///SV_88iESSzxCmLGAex

08.01.2022 I always sit in the cinema at the end of a film to watch the credits, to see how many women were part of the camera team. Most times it is not as many as it sho...uld be. I want us to all think about how we can change this, and not just for women, but also for people of colour, for those who identify as LGBTQ+, for people working with a disability, to make our camera departments more inclusive, and more like the world we live in. I believe that part of my role as cinematographer is creating a place on set for open-hearted collaboration. Consciously choosing a diverse and balanced crew helps build a creative space that can listen to many perspectives. We can all do something concrete towards making change in our industry. 05.01.2022 When I was an assistant I often worked with female focus pullers and DPs. Now that I am a cinematographer it seems natural my own teams be diverse and inclusive....
