The Victorian Branch is excited to have international guest Roger Horrocks joining us for a talk on underwater cinematography. Roger is an underwater cinematographer specialising in wildlife imagery for documentaries and features.... Since working with Didier Noirot on BBC’s Nature’s Great Events series in 2007, Roger has gone on to become arguably one of the most renowned underwater cinematographers in the world. In the past few years, he has worked with Netflix, BBC, Disney and National Geographic, shooting sequences for Our Planet, Blue Planet II, and most recently, My Octopus Teacher. In 2018, he won a BAFTA for his contribution to Blue Planet II, and in 2019, he was nominated for Outstanding Cinematography at the PrimeTime Emmys. In 2019 he was one of two cinematographers selected to shoot Apple’s screensavers for Apple TV. He is currently working on Planet Earth 3 and an ocean series for Netflix. 25.01.2022 A diverse crew is the way we represent a multitude of voices in storytelling and filmmaking. People always say to me well it should be a meritocracy" and I alw...ays agree and point out that the big problem is that right now it is far from a meritocracy. As a Head of Department you have a responsibility. Everyone can do their part to enact change. It's time to think about these issues. So let's all work together to make the film and TV industry just that; a place where numerous diverse voices can be heard. 25.01.2022 "I cast a crew like a director might cast an actor, I want the best person for the job. What Im looking for is a combination of skill, determination, attitude ...and personality. 24.01.2022 This NAIDOC week the ACS wishes to celebrate our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cinematographers and to acknowledge their invaluable and ongoing contribu...tion to Australian storytelling. Over the following seven days we will be sharing links to current viewing material on NITV/SBS On Demand. Please take the time to tune in and appreciate the great work. If you also wish to know more about NAIDOC week please head to www.naidoc.org.au/ NAIDOC stands for the National Aborigines and Islander Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. We recognise that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Always Was, Always Will Be.

24.01.2022 I always sit in the cinema at the end of a film to watch the credits, to see how many women were part of the camera team. Most times it is not as many as it sho...uld be. I want us to all think about how we can change this, and not just for women, but also for people of colour, for those who identify as LGBTQ+, for people working with a disability, to make our camera departments more inclusive, and more like the world we live in. I believe that part of my role as cinematographer is creating a place on set for open-hearted collaboration. Consciously choosing a diverse and balanced crew helps build a creative space that can listen to many perspectives. We can all do something concrete towards making change in our industry. 23.01.2022 How the landscape of whos in the crew has changed from last century! Its been a long time coming keep going! The more inclusive and diverse your team, the s...tronger you become because everyone is invested, heart and soul. And that matters. The way we frame the story makes a difference for the audience, and part of our story is who we choose to have on the ground with us. I always tell my students this quote: Act as if what you do makes a difference. 22.01.2022 If we are going to continue to grow as a culture with any meaning, everyone has to be an equal contributor. Creativity is beyond gender, race and disability. Fi...lmmaking is now a massive part of a culture that we share globally. We have been afforded a voice, and wouldnt it be a wonderful thing if we were able to share that voice with everyone regardless of race, gender, disability or religious persuasion? Of course it would. For me this is the key. I see cinematographers as active participants in the content of the films we make. We are not unfeeling technicians. Our culture grows slowly, its in us, and it infuses our world with all we hold dear. It will live longer than us. So lets get a grip on the wider picture, humanity demands we share the opportunity around. Now. 22.01.2022 After my nearly 60 years as a cinematographer both in Australia and overseas, I have worked with crews on movies and commercials that for the most part consiste...d mainly of men. I feel strongly that in todays world the cinematographer has the golden opportunity to make the gender numbers more equal around the camera. Of course this should extend to minorities of any race or persuasion. Its a no brainer really and it is an important issue to be addressed by the cinematographer who is putting a crew together nowadays and in the future. A more inclusive diversity amongst not only camera crew, but all crew, should lead to diversity in social and cultural expression. 18.01.2022 A committed individual can make a profound impact towards equity. DP Geoff Burton made a conscious decision to hire and mentor women in his camera team, and lau...nched the careers of several female cinematographers, including my own. We all need to continue this for the upcoming generation of female DPs. Being a woman in a camera team is just normal to me. Thats what a camera team looks like. The people on set that have remarked about my gender have mostly been actresses saying: Thank God there are women behind the camera. It changes everything about the culture of a set. 34 years after Jan Kenny was the first Australian woman to shoot a feature film Im gobsmacked that gender equity is still an issue in camera departments. Cinematography is a role that women have proven again and again they can perform creatively, technically, and physically at the highest levels of excellence. 05.01.2022 As a DP working almost exclusively in television drama, I am committed to a gender balance in the camera department. Equally important, is to think about the c...areer advancement and development of skills for female technicians who are interested in a career as a director of photography. The goal, as I see it, should be to have women better represented beyond the assistant level. Across the film and television industry there are many different career opportunities available, however in television drama it is possible to consider a persons career beyond a single job and I believe it is incumbent on DPs in this part of the sector to promote women into senior roles in the camera department. We need to support the career advancement of women while delivering exceptional television. 05.01.2022 Thanks to Zoe White ACS, Mark Wareham ACS, Sissy Reyes, Toby Petch, Ben Allan ACS, Arri Australia, Taste Creative & Bus Stop Films and all others who posted to ...#whoisinyourcrew this week. Some very thoughtful words accompanied these images, so sharing those too. The last week of the campaign is coming up so please share more images with us, so we can repost them next Sunday! We are honoured that our friends at Imago featured the campaign on their website, hopefully we might see some posts from other parts of the globe soon! If storytelling is the way in which we represent ourselves and our world, well it goes without say that we need diverse storytellers to be complete as people. We are all part of the picture. And how much richer will that picture become when we can all share in the making of it, together. Pic 7: Toby Petch @tobypetch @emmaelias__ As department heads we need to influence change in the people we are working with, encouraging the training required to input diversity through the full range of the crew. Training new people is a commitment, it requires time, patience and understanding. The choices made as to who is trained, when and why are in our hands. These are decisions that need to be made carefully if we want change, as change will never come without our conscious devotion towards it. Pic 8: Ben Allan ACS @benallanacs @velindawardell @nicdaleydp Supporting diversity in our industry is more than just hiring diversely. Its also about giving people opportunities to progress their careers and supporting them as they forge their own path. These are two photos of Velinda Wardell ACS in my crew, 20 years apart. The first is in 1998 testing the new @kodak_shootfilm 800T neg stock and the other is camera operating for me on a job in 2018. In between she earned a Masters degree in #cinematography from @aftrs became National Secretary of @austcine and the 6th woman ever to receive her ACS letters. She is also a friend, mentor and inspiration to countless young female cinematographers around the world. Today you can see her work camera operating in the crew of Academy Award Winner @ddbeebe on @iamwomanmovie shot on the @arri_rental #Alexa65 Nicola Daley @nicdaleydp stood out to me as soon as I met her when she was a rental prep technician at @lemac_australia The first of these photos was taken when a newly freelance Nicola was camera operating for me on the short film la Palabra in 2002. Her sense of composition was then and still is exceptional. The second photo was taken 12 years later, the day after she became the 8th woman in history to ever receive the ACS letters. If people ever question the value of the push for gender equality I would point to Nicola, who in recent years has started to get work more in line with her talent and professionalism. This has included the TV series Harlots The Letdown Paradise Lost and Domina, the feature film Pin Cushion and documentary biopic of Manolo Blahnik The Boy Who Made Shoes For Lizards. She has been admitted to the illustrious ranks of @bafta and @theacademy - none of which has surprised me but I know that if she had been a man with the same talent, the opportunities would not have taken so long to come around. Very proud to know her and to have occasionally helped her along the way. 04.01.2022 As cinematographers we have the power to employ our crews. I believe that we have to be proactive and include at least 50% women in the camera department. On my... last production there were 4 women in a crew of 7, and one of the men was indigenous. It makes for a better and more balanced working environment and also a far better representation of the world we live in. The challenge now is to enable these women to move through the camera department and to be given the same opportunities as the men. 02.01.2022 When I was an assistant I often worked with female focus pullers and DPs. Now that I am a cinematographer it seems natural my own teams be diverse and inclusive.... Putting together a great team means finding the people who are the best at their job and have a good working dynamic, which always seems to be well represented by a diverse crew. This is the way it always comes out for me. 02.01.2022 Ive always thought of filmmaking as like having a microphone in a room. And for so long that mic has been in the hands of a few. Imagine what will happen when ...we put the mic in the hands of those who havent yet spoken? Imagine the adventures theyll tell, the laughs well have, the scares well get and the inspiration well gain from hearing from them. Isnt that exciting? So its up to us now, the ones whove had the mic, to make sure we hand it around the room. To work with people on how to use their voice and encourage them to get on stage. Our lives, our work places and our stories will be better for it and I cant bloody wait. 01.01.2022 A culture of equality: Nicola Daley ACS - "People always say to me 'well it should be a meritocracy' and I always agree and point out that right now it is far f...rom it." Matthey Chuang ACS - "No one wants to be hired simply because of their gener or race. We want to be hired for our work ethic and what we bring to the production. All we want is the opportunity to show our worth." Lucas Tomoana - "I've always thought of filmmaking like having a microphone in a room. Imagine what will happen when we put the mic in the hands of those who haven't yet spoken?" Tania Lambert ACS - "Don't underestimate your power as a Head of Department. Actively leveling the playing field moves us closer to equality." Martin McGrath ACS - "If we are going to continue to grow as a culture with any meaning, everyone has to be an equal contributor."
