12.01.2022 'Trust is mission critical' - Dr Hugo Slim, Head of Policy for International Committee of the Red Cross, spoke at the Australian Civil-Military Centre's roundtable regarding the challenges humanitarian action faces in the 21st century. With 2019 marking the 70th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, Dr Slim also discussed how these protocols remain relevant in todays complex international environment. This event was a unique opportunity for Australian policy makers and Defence stakeholders to hear from and question one of the ICRCs most senior diplomats.
11.01.2022 This week the Australian Civil-Military Centre partnered with the Asia-Pacific Centre for Military Law by delivering an Inter-agency (Civil-Military-Police) Module to the Armed Forces of the Philippines Command and General Staff College. A fantastic week working with the skilled and professional Class 65, sharing practices, lessons and experience. We also celebrated Australia - Philippines Friendship Day, celebrating 73 years of diplomatic relations and friendship.

08.01.2022 MAJGEN Ellwood opened a table top exercise on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief run by the Australian Civil-Military Centre with Timor-Leste and the United States. Australia was pleased to support this important activity to help build resilience to natural disasters and ensure governments, civil society organisations and regional partners are prepared to respond together.
07.01.2022 To celebrate the launch of the Defence-RAP, the Australian Civil-Military Centre held a staff Indigenous Cultural Day. We started with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Tina followed by the naming of our Training Room to 'Daramulum', the Ngunnawal word meaning 'Higher Learning'. The afternoon saw us taking part in an Aboriginal Cultural Tour at Mt Majura where our guide and local Ngunawal traditional custodian, Tyronne Bell interpreted the landscape, pointing out the areas natural resources and how these were expertly used by Aboriginal people.
06.01.2022 ACMC staff were proud to participate in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Civil-Military Coordination Workshop. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the civil-military coordination mechanisms for our ASEAN colleagues and the value of partnerships between civilians and militaries throughout South-East Asia. The workshop promoted open discussion through the facilitation of a table-top exercise and provided the ability to share lessons learned from previous Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) responses. The emphasis was that relationship building is the key to a stronger region and promoting a united ASEAN response to disasters in the region.

06.01.2022 ACMC has held our latest two-day Civil-Military-Police Interaction Workshop this week in Canberra. The Workshop was designed to explore the concepts, interaction and challenges faced by government departments and the non-government sector when responding to a humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters overseas. The Workshop exposed participants to the best practice principles of leadership in a multi-agency environment (Leading Together), as well as the different organi...sational cultures and work styles employed by responders. Participants from the Australian Government included the Australian Federal Police, Department of Defence, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Emergency Management Australia. New Zealand Government was represented by the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, New Zealand Police and New Zealand Defence Force. Civil Society was also represented with participants from RedR and the World Food Program. All organisations actively contributed to understanding each others roles, mandates and organisational cultures. Presentations covered topics ranging from emerging threats, operationalising whole-of-government cooperation through to Women, Peace & Security and working with Civil Society. See more

02.01.2022 A great pleasure to host the High Commissioner of New Zealand to Australia, the Hon Dame Annette King along with the High Commission's Defence Advisor, Capt. Shaun Fogarty at a reception held here at the Australian Civil-Military Centre. In recognition of our strong bi-lateral relationship with New Zealand, the Australian Civil-Military Centres position of Deputy Executive Director is seconded from the New Zealand government, military or police. Last weeks visit provided a timely opportunity for an introduction of our current deputy, Ms Angela Fitzsimons to the High Commissioner and for our staff to engage in informal discussions around our strong ties with New Zealand and the New Zealand High Commission here in Canberra.
