25.01.2022 When auscultating the chest, listen for lung sounds before listening to the heart, as the louder sounds of the heart make it harder to hear the quieter sounds of the lungs. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

25.01.2022 Correct loading of the autoclave is essential for effective air removal and steam penetration, so no matter how tempting when you have all those packs needing to be processed, dont overload it. Minimal resistance is key, as steam is passive and will not actively penetrate tight spaces, voiding the whole process. #ACVN #VetNurse#Facts

25.01.2022 Friday funny. An oldie but a goodie. Enjoy your weekend! #Friday #TGIF

25.01.2022 Signs of fear and anxiety in dogs can include cowering with head and body low, tense muscles, tembling, head down with ears back, brows furrowed, panting / yawning / lip licking, salivation or apparent lack of control over urination and defecation, hypervigilant or looking distracted. It is best to put some time and effort into winning the confidence of these patients. Spend time with them, talk quietly and encourage them to come to you. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

25.01.2022 Performing pre-anaesthetic blood tests helps the vet to determine the kidney and liver function of our patients, as well as some other parameters. These organs are responsible for the metabolism (elimination) of the anaesthetic drugs we use, so checking that they work properly helps the vet to decide on the drugs to be used with that particular pet. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

25.01.2022 This is a great tool from the BSAVA!

24.01.2022 Many veterinary clinics have a policy to re-process and re-sterilise items that have been left unused for a period of 3 months. It is very important to note that package integrity is the main factor in whether an item can be considered sterile or not, and this is not affected by time, but rather by handling, storage and of course correct processing and packaging to start with. So your item may be unsterile within a week, or even before it is put on the shelf, negating the three-month protocol! All items should be inspected before use, and if there are any signs of being unsuitable for use it should be put aside for reprocessing. A regular maintenance task (weekly, monthly, etc.) by which all items are inspected for package integrity is recommended so you can reprocess anything not sterile. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

20.01.2022 Hands up (well, Like!) who gets excited over a good abscess?! One of the ones where you lance it and drain lots of pus?! I think Id be hard pressed to find a vet nurse who didnt like the satisfaction of tending to such a wound! Maybe youre a rare breed of veterinary nurse who doesnt like pus, but doesnt mind the challenge of a degloving or dog attack injury? Have a read of Jess Males blog on wound management! http://vns.vet/2rMc266

20.01.2022 Mannitol can form crystals when it cools; if this happens, gently warming the fluid will dissolve these crystals. For this reason, mannitol should always be administered through a blood giving set to ensure that any crystals are filtered out. Alternatively an inline IV filter can be fitted to the administration line. A new filter or giving set should be fitted for each separate dose of mannitol as the filters can clog up with the crystals. Prior to administration of mannitol, the IV catheter should be checked for patency as extravasations may cause oedema and skin necrosis. A large bore and vein should be utilised for mannitol administration due to its hyper osmotic nature. Thrombophlebitis can also occur. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

18.01.2022 Surgical instruments must have no viable micro-organisms on them. Any dirt and foreign particles (even sterile) left on instruments and materials can cause very dangerous complications if they enter a patient through a surgical incision. The body tends to reject any foreign matter, and a result may be the delay of recovery and healing with extra suffering for the patient. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

13.01.2022 As you may already know, every single patient that presents with a toxicity will differ in some way. No two patients ever ingest the same amount of toxin or are the same breed, weight or age as one another. For this reason, preparing for a patient with a suspected toxicity always starts with triage. Lara outlines some of the important considerations for handling these cases in her blog. http://vns.vet/2rMuBa5

12.01.2022 Well, thats kinda scary (and cute) isnt it. #Cuteness #Dinokitty #ACVN #ACAC

11.01.2022 De bakey Forceps These forceps have been designed to be atraumatic not damaging to tissues. They have a grip pattern that allows the surgeon the same control that the rat tooth forceps provide without causing damage to the tissues. All instruments should be cleaned with a cleaner designed to clean instruments, other cleaning agents such as chlorhexidine, can cause irreversible damage to expensive instruments #ACVN #VetNurse#Facts

09.01.2022 There are foods that are toxic to birds and should never ben fed! Never allow a bird to eat dairy, alcohol, soft drinks. lollies, salt, chocolate, avocado or any item in the onion family. Contrary to popular belief, apple seeds are not toxic and when fed in normal amounts (i.e feeding a whole apple to a large bird for example) is completely safe. It is not recommended to remove the seed and feed the seeds alone though. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts #birds

08.01.2022 Confused about surgical terminology? A procedure which ends in -tomy or -otomy involves cutting, but no removal. For example, in a Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO) the tibia has a cut made right through it that allows the surgeon to change the angle of the stifle, but nothing is actually removed from the joint. An "-otomy" is literally an "incision." These types of procedures are often used in exploratory surgery to get an idea of what is going on in the body without removing anything, as in the case of a gastrotomy, where the stomach is opened to allow a doctor to see the inside. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

07.01.2022 It makes sense to remove retained deciduous teeth at the time of desexing, both for the pets health and financially for the owner. Depending on how many retained teeth there are and how hard they are to extract, the cost can vary. You should always inspect an animals mouth for retained teeth on admission for surgery, and if you are unsure, get the vet to check. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

02.01.2022 Gloves act as a barrier that protects staff and patients. Gloves protect staff from coming into contact with the potentially infectious microorganisms that can be found in blood, other bodily fluids, and waste. During examinations and clinical procedures, gloves also protect patients from infections that can be caused by the micro-organisms normally found on the skin of service providers. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

01.01.2022 Unlike many other small businesses, we are lucky that our normal operations already have 80% of our employees working remotely from home and from tonight, our office staff are joining them. For the last 10 years, we have been working remotely as a team and delivering online education. Despite the challenges we are all facing as a community, we expect very minimal disruption to our services and assessment of work within our normal timeframes. All our standard student support c...hannels are open as normal. Students can continue to study their theory from the safety of their own home with our full support. Were still open for new enrolments :) We are putting extra support measures in place for students, including expanding our Employee Assistance Program to cover all our 600ish students. Contingency plans are underway for clinical placement requirements to be postponed as necessary for students affected. As a small family owned business ourselves, we feel for all the small businesses affected out there by this crisis, especially our fellow veterinary services. Where we can, we are diverting all our supply ordering and needed services to other small family owned businesses. We are open to talking to any veterinary employers about the tools we use for working remotely, or the policies we have in place. You just need to reach out and send us a message :) We are happy to share how we make things works with staff working from home. We will soon release a range of professional development related options for veterinary nurses and clinics affected by the various closures and self-isolation policies. These are in addition to the short courses we already offer that can be studied from home. Well keep you updated when these are ready. Personally, Id like to thank all the students and veterinary professionals over the year who have supported us. Please, continue to support small businesses as much as you can, we do appreciate it! Stay safe everyone, and please remember to wash you hands frequently, like you just snuggled a ringworm kitty. ~Harrie Phillips Managing Director and Veterinary Nurse.
