24.01.2022 Have you heard the word about our friends at @seaweedery? They are one of two successful teams to pass through Austral Fisheries search for the next innovative seafood solution. They are now in their crowdfunding stage and need your support! "We see food as a powerful argument for change from both personal and economic points of view - we eat and buy food daily. Here at Seaweedery we are fusing great flavour and nutrition with sustainable principles, making sure our food prov...ides better health for you and the planet. When you buy frozen prawns their shells are often missing have you ever wondered about what happens to them? Well, usually they go straight to the landfill, sharing the same route as almost 50% of seafood catch, which includes prawn shells, fish carcasses and heads. And these parts hold the most flavour and nutrition, used by chefs at the restaurant kitchens to create delicious meals! We set our mission to rescue these flavours and nutrition and bring them to your table starting with tasty prawn oil, made from discarded prawn shells!" Icefish from the Heard Island & McDonald Islands fishery Toothfish from the Macquarie Island fishery Banana, Tiger and Endeavour prawns from the Northern Prawn Fishery We also catch a variety of snapper and mixed species in the joint-Commonwealth-NT managed Timor Reef Fishery. If you want sustainable seafood, ask for Aussie seafood!

14.01.2022 Last night we farewelled the Cape Arkona as she departed for Mauritius and took another step toward her maiden fishing voyage. We would like to take this chance to recognise and thank some of the people from our team and our collaborators who have worked closely on this history-making project for the last four years and more. A snippet from the article linked below:... https://lnkd.in/eNCtwSj "Firstly, a big thank you to our Southern Fleet General Manager, Peter Stevens, who has overseen the project from the idea and concept stage through to completion. Pete spent months away from home in Poland and Norway at various stages, finalising the drawings, hull fabrication and design features among many other things. It has been a labour of love and to come out the other side with a state of the art fishing vessel that is a world first in many aspects is testament to the commitment and vision shown by Pete and his team throughout the build. Pete has been ably assisted by his Southern Fleet team; Janine Philbey, Greg Jones and Theo Verios, who each spent plenty of time away from home in Poland and Norway as well." 12.01.2022 Happy 1st Birthday Climate Active! It's been a year since the Climate Active brand was launched, and we're proud members - alongside dozens of other leaders - all doing their bit to voluntarily offset and reduce their emissions. Together the Climate Active Network has offset more than 22 million tonnes of carbon, and for Austral this means we've planted over a MILLION trees since we became the first seafood business in the world to be carbon neutral back in 2016. For us, we ...just knew it was the right thing to do. The health of our oceans depend on us and our peers taking action today, to ensure that the future is full of fish! We look forward to seeing the Climate Active Network grow, and more organisations taking another step in their sustainability journey in this space. 06.01.2022 Today is World Maritime Day. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the professionalism and sacrifice of the two million seafarers who serve on the world’s merchant fleet. Shipping has continued to transport more than 80% of world trade, including vital medical supplies, food and other basic goods that are critical for the COVID-19 response and recovery. But hundreds of thousands of seafarers, including those on fishing boats, face a humanitarian crisis as they have been stra...nded at sea, unable to get off the ships they operate with contracts extended by many months. This needs to be addressed urgently, through Governments designating seafarers as essential workers and ensuring safe crew changes can take place. Austral Fisheries support the call from SeaBOS, comprising the world’s 10 largest seafood companies, in urging governments to support boat crews and ocean workers. https://seabos.org//SeaBOS-calls-on-governments-to-support Listen via the link below to Austral Fisheries CEO David Carter speak to 6PR’s Gareth Parker on this critical issue. https://www.6pr.com.au//why-thousands-are-still-stranded-/ We encourage you to support the fishermen and maritime industry workers who catch the fish we eat, and transport more than 80% of the goods we enjoy.

05.01.2022 It's the first official World Manta Day and we at Austral are proud to have supported Project Manta - The manta rays of Australia along with others. Manta rays are highly intelligent creatures, but unfortunately also highly threatened. Project Manta, based out of the Coral Bay Research Station, was the most comprehensive study of Manta Rays to date, and it still relies on community support to ID and share sightings of Mantas in the wild. These organisations are doing vital work to understand and protect manta rays now and in the future.
