24.01.2022 A good win for Australia Over 70s at University of Auckland Cricket Club today. Chasing Australia’s 3 for 240, Auckland finished on 7 for 114 off their 40 overs. All of the Australian bowlers were effective - Colin Cooke (0 for 19 off 5) and Ron Kasputtis (1 for 18 off 6) opened the attack, Phillip Smith (1 for 18 off 7) and Jim Geltch (1 for 5 off 4) bowled great lines. But it was Ross Calvert and his off-spin who did most of the damage, taking 4 for 16 off his 7 excellent o...vers. Two were bowled, one caught by Phillip Smith and one stumped by Ian Gibson. The other bowlers - Warren McWilliam and Kerry Emery - were also tidy. Harry Solomons opened the batting for the Auckland team, making 6 before being bowled by Ron Kasputtis. It’s been a beautiful day in Auckland, with a cricket match against fine opposition. See more
22.01.2022 It’s lunch at Hutt District Cricket Club, in the ODI against New Zealand. The game has been reduced to 40 overs because of substantial overnight rain, with bowlers limited to a maximum of 8 overs each. A highlight of the day was the presentation of Australian caps to Kerry Emery, Warren McWilliams, Harry Solomons, Ron Redford, Ian Rowland and Jim Geltch, making their debuts for the Australian Over 70s side. Sent in to bat on a good wicket but slow outfield, Australia compiled... Ian Rowland and Harry Solomons opened the batting, with Solomons caught in the covers for 6. Rowland was next to go for an entertaining 26, followed by Ian Petherick caught and bowled for 19, Jim Geltch a patient 14, Ron Radford LBW for 6, Ian Gibson run out for 7, Warren McWilliams another LBW for 17, Phillip Smith LBW for 3, and Colin Cooke LBW for 2. Roger Edmunds remained not out for an invaluable 17, with Ron Kasputtis on 1. While not a large score, it may still be competitive with tight bowling and fielding. See more

19.01.2022 We’re at the beautiful Parnell Cricket Club in Auckland, for the last game of the tour. Winning the toss and batting, Australia’s batsmen played a fine team game, making 5 for 209 in 40 overs. The game is being played under social rules, with retirements at 40 balls or 40 runs. Roger Edmunds and Ian Gibson opened the batting, with Edmunds caught off Gavin Chatfield for 12. Ian Petherick was LBW for 11, and Gibson retired on 16. Ron Radford was caught for 26, Jim Geltch retired on 29, Garry Clarke retired for 41 and Phil Smith remained not out at the end on 31. The other batsmen, Colin Cooke (6) and Ian Rowland (9), were contributors, while Ross Calvert faced only one ball for his 1 not out. It’s a true wicket and a fast outfield, so the game is in the balance.

05.01.2022 It’s 3 for 240 for Australia at the University of Auckland Cricket Club, as we settle down to a magnificent lunch. Ian Petherick won the toss and batted, on a good wicket and a lightning fast outfield. Roger Edmunds missed the game, while Harry Solomons filled in for the Auckland team. Ian Rowland (42), Warren McWilliams (42) and Garry Clark (40) all retired, with Clark making a welcome return from a calf injury. Ron Kasputtis made 25 before being out LBW, while Phillip Smith (19 no), Ross Calvert (17) and Jim Geltch (13 no) all made significant contributions. Ron Radford was LBW for 5. Wides were a bonus for the Australians, with 33 for the innings. And Harry Solomons took a catch for Auckland to dismiss Ross Calvert.
03.01.2022 We had sunny skies, Wellington winds and finally rain at the Petone Cricket Club this afternoon. In reply to Australia’s 2 for 224, Wellington batted well against an Australian attack that struggled in the windy conditions. Phillip Smith took 2 for 26 off his 4 overs, and Warren McWilliams 1 for 30 off 6, as Wellington reached 3 for 133 in 29 overs. Ron Kasputtis, Kerry Emery, Jim Geltch and Roger Edmunds all bowled steadily without taking wickets. Wellington had played well, needing 92 off the final 11 overs when the match was called off. Ian Gibson was pleased to receive a bottle of Otago pinot noir for man-of-the-match for 43 retired off 36 balls.

02.01.2022 It’s been a fantastic win in a great game of cricket at Hutt Districts! Chasing Australia’s 9 for 141, New Zealand batted with grit and skill, but fell short at 8 for 126 off their 40 overs. Ron Kasputtis and Colin Cooke opened the bowling economically, with Cooke taking the first wicket in the sixth over. New Zealand’s number three, Tony Penny, played a fine innings of 56, but periodically lost partners. Jim Geltch created a superb run out of the New Zealand captain, Bevan Guthrie, for 2, then wickets fell to Roger Edmunds (1 for 19 off 5), Warren McWilliams (1 for 26 off 7) and Phillip Smith (3 for 36 off eight). Kerry Emery bowled 4 tight overs and Ian Petherick one. Colin Cooke won the player-of-the-match for Australia with 2 for 11 off 8 excellent overs. Celebrations are continuing.
