25.01.2022 I was born blind, but I didn’t think I was any different from other people until I was about 12 and the teachers at St Paul’s School for the Blind started telli...ng us all this rubbish about how we were different from other children, that we had to behave a certain way when we went to school with sighted children. It was a load of rubbish. I finished secondary school at St Aloysius in North Melbourne, but I didn’t go to university because I wanted to help Mum. There wasn’t much money in our family, so I trained as a library technician and went to work in a Catholic School library. I’ve always been somebody who likes technology and has always taken advantage of technology. An opportunity came up to be a classroom assistant at Vision Australia and I did that for many years. The iPhone changed my life it has brought so many opportunities for vision impaired people. I remember first seeing a touchscreen on a Mac and I talked about it for months because I realised the difference it would make for blind people. The iPhone has made life so much easier. Everything is more accessible, easier, and faster for vision impaired people. I was born in the Royal Women’s Hospital and I lived in North Melbourne for 46 years. I’ve lived in Kensington for the past 24 and a half years. What I love about living in Kensington is the very interesting and diverse community. As I walk down the street, I meet all types of people and I never know what conversation I’m going to have. Being vision impaired is a bonus here, because people know that it’s ok to talk to me. I meet the old, the young, I meet people from all sorts of places and that’s what I really like. Everyone knows I’m a North Melbourne supporter. But when I was a young girl growing up in North Melbourne, I decided I was going to barrack for St Kilda. Well, the other kids wouldn’t talk to me, which really hurts when you can’t see. So I learnt that I had to barrack for North Melbourne and I’ve stayed very loyal. I think we’ll have a better year this year. We’ll come up the ladder a bit and we could make the finals. I’ve always been a hopeful person. We should never see a cup as empty or half empty we should use all the resources we’ve got and make the most of everything we’ve got, including our time. Make up your mind, each day, that it’s going to be a positive day and and say, I’m going to do the best I can. - Mary Wynne, Local Icon

09.01.2022 A Tribute For Our Heroes Written by Stefanie Harlow 5/01/2020 As a fellow Aussie, both born and bred, I’ve got something I’d like to say, it’s been going round... in my head. As I sit here safe in my own home watching all the media, I find myself thinking that some people have no idea. I was wondering how I can help, or even play a part, Then it came to me, why not spread the word from the bottom of my heart. Our country is suffering, its in a darn bad way, But our Aussie firefighters have come to try and save the day. The thing is battling a fire is not an easy task, But here are our Aussie heroes dressed up with a mask. It takes some courage and a selfless act, To jump right in front of fire blazing and have your mates back. Being in amongst those scorching flames, Is nothing short of a dangerous game. We know your all tired and have had lack of sleep. All of Australia are standing behind you, while your right there in the deep. The days are long and there’s more challenges ahead, Please take each day as it comes and make it to the end. We as a country have already lost so much, This beautiful land we call home is burning and only leaving dust. It’s sad and depressing all the stories we are hearing, About our loss of wildlife, homes and lives, its leaving us all grieving. Hear me when I say this, with no end in sight, That our hope, love and thoughts are with you during this big fight. We know your all doing your best and cant save everything in harms way, As long as you are all aware our prayers are with you to make it through each day. The work your doing and the lengths your going to, Will continue to leave us all appreciative and thankful for you. To the women and the men out there making the sacrifice, And the fallen heroes who’ve paid the ultimate price, We’ll be sure to remember in years to come, Your bravery, commitment and endless efforts you have all done. As a nation we are extremely proud of you all, for what its worth, You give us gratitude and sense of hope for our futures, left here on this earth. See this is what being Australian is all about, Showing all kinds of support towards each other through the bushfires and the drought. Lets show our Aussie spirit to the world and how we can bounce back, Our aussie pride and fighting attitudes are what puts us on the map. Through this tragedy of events, I only ask you one simple favour, If given the chance, please help out an aussie neighbour. Put your differences, opinions and politics aside, Focus on helping these communities get through this hard time. So Australia lets wrap this up and all band round, And also thank these true blue heroes that make us bloody proud. They’re going above and beyond their call of duty, To try and save our land and all of its remaining beauty. Thank you

09.01.2022 Thank you Melbourne! We've been overwhelmed by your generosity. Please note: the queue to get into our Yarraville warehouse is more than 1km long, with well ove...r an hour wait, and we won't be able to accept any more donations today. We are having to ask people at the end of the queue to head back home. It will take us the next few hours to process the existing queue of cars and we ask you to consider coming during the week. Foodbank Victoria is open each day from 10am to 5pm if you are able to choose another day. With heartfelt thanks for your support!

06.01.2022 In all his 32 years of service as an NSW RFS volunteer firefighter, Brian Newby has never witnessed the kind of #bushfires he’s fighting now. Brian who's also ...a Postal Delivery Co-Ordinator at Australia Post says: The hardest part is the waiting game. You have four #fires bearing down on you and you don’t know which one will reach you first. The biggest thing is the unknown. We can all lend a hand. Donate here: https://auspo.st/RedCross See more
