25.01.2022 Sensei Matsunawa demonstrates bunkai from Matsumura Rohai. Sensei uses his striking hand to grab and control the take down of the attacker.

23.01.2022 "Either you karate do "yes" or karate do "no." You karate do "guess so," (get squished) just like grape." - Mr. Miyagi

22.01.2022 Congratulations to Hats for her silver medal! Great work.Congratulations to Hats for her silver medal! Great work.

22.01.2022 Now that football has finished for the year, why not think about a sport which allows you to sustain your fitness through the off season and at the same time pick up some new skills and learn self defence. With a range of morning and evening classes to choose from, check out aama.com.au for more information.

22.01.2022 This drill continues to build on the current theme of striking with potential. The attacker is walking forwards and backwards, the defender is constantly adjusting their distance to ensure that all attacks can be delivered on target, with potential. The attacker is working at 50% speed to allow them to focus movement and striking from the correct distance.

19.01.2022 Never put passion in front of principle, even if you win, you’ll lose - Mr. Miyagi

18.01.2022 A reminder that we have five competitors representing AAMA at the Qld State Titles today: Sensei Trevor (kata), Sempai Tom (kumite), Hatsuho (kata), Tahlia (kata) and Kate (kata). Normally we would be encouraging you to head down and show your support, but COVID-19 restrictions mean there are limited numbers allowed in the venue. So please click the likes below to show your support! Best of luck team!

18.01.2022 Sensei Matsunawa demonstrates bunkai from Matsumura Rohai. The key technique in this sequence is the simultaneous block and strike.

17.01.2022 Sensei Matsunawa demonstrates bunkai from Seienchin. The attacker uses two hands to grab the gi/shirt; Sensei steps forward and uses his body weight as he pushes into the attacker's sternum.

17.01.2022 Sensei leads the Basic club students through a movement drill to practice sliding forwards, backwards and sideways. Good footwork is one of the key components of kumite and self defence.

14.01.2022 The senior class practices bunkai from different segments of Pinan Shodan. Each segment has a key learning point for us to focus on and helps us develop skills for different self defence scenarios.

14.01.2022 And that's a wrap for AAMA's 2020 training calendar for the year. And boy what a year! Although it feels like ages ago, we formally opened our dojo at the beginning of the year (yep, that was still in 2020!). But opening the dojo is only the beginning and I think it is important that we acknowledge all the behind the scenes worker bees at AAMA which keep our dojo ticking along, even when you are not there (and usually do it whilst training themselves). So, to our tireless ...and dedicated volunteers we thank you for the odds and ends jobs in the carpentry department, gardening, stocktaking, managing tradies and other service providers, answering the phone, stocking the kitchen, keeping the vacuum cleaner on the go (very thankful for that one!), doing the accounts, writing grant applications, organising the first aid updates, liaising with the community in and around us, attending the committee meetings and generally herding the cats! And then there are the coaches who not only turn up to take the classes, but attend their own internal and external coaching update dates, write the curricula and this year even had starring roles in our "training from home" videos. A big, big thank you to our wonderful and tireless crew which keep AAMA ticking along. Enjoy your well-earned break!

13.01.2022 Sensei discusses a foundation concept of karate and self defence: moving on the attacker's movement, rather than waiting to see what the attack is.

12.01.2022 Congratulations to Sempai Tom Foreman for taking out gold in the Kumite Male Open division! Sensei Trevor competed in the veterans men's kata playing off for bronze.

12.01.2022 "Better learn balance. Balance is key. Balance good, karate good. Everything good. Balance bad, better pack up, go home. Understand?" - Mr. Miyagi

09.01.2022 Several partnered kihon drills from last Saturday's class. We are always meant to visualise our opponent when performing kihon drills, but having someone charging at you makes it easier to understand the purpose of drill!

09.01.2022 At the Qld State Titles tomorrow, AAMA have three referees volunteering their time for the love of their sport. We thank Sensei Shuichi Matsunawa, Sempai Vesa Pekkarinen and Sempai Errol Jonathan for their contribution. Sensei Matsunawa and Sempai Pekkarinen have also been dedicating time to coach our three kyu grade kata competitors. https://www.aama.com.au/about-aama/our-officials/

08.01.2022 This video demonstrates two different ways of performing jodan mawashi geri. The first is following a clinch in a kumite bout; we're trying to deliver the kick from short distance as a surprise attack. The second way allows the technique to be delivered from long distance using tsugi ashi footwork.

04.01.2022 "You trust the quality of what you know, not quantity." - Mr. Miyagi

02.01.2022 Congratulations Tahlia on your bronze medal for kata! Well done.

02.01.2022 It’s ok to lose to opponent. It’s never okay to lose to fear" - Mr. Miyagi

01.01.2022 First learn stand, then learn fly. Nature rule Daniel san, not mine - Mr. Miyagi
