25.01.2022 Good news! The postponed flares dispense training by an Air Force C-130J Hercules from RAAF Base Richmond will be happening today. Get your cameras ready to ca...pture this rare sight and watch this space! The best vantage point for members of the public who wish to view this training activity today is from the Tourist Centre on Hawkesbury Valley Way, opposite RAAF Base Richmond. One aircraft will dispense flares between 1pm and 1.30pm. A second aircraft will dispense flares between 3pm and 3.30pm. The Hercules will be operating from an altitude of approximately 1000 metres, which is above the burn-out height for the flares. This activity forms part of the final week of an intense training for aircrew from No. 285 Squadron, who have spent the past six months learning to operate the C-130J Hercules. These flares are a countermeasure system to defend the Hercules against attacks, and allow the aircrew to deliver cargo and personnel into some of the toughest environments around the world. We'd love to see your photos of this event today by sharing them on our page.
