24.01.2022 As some of my family and friends may already know adoption has touched my life and the lives of sisters, Bev Bartlett & Hazel Hodge very deeply. Over the past 8... plus years it has been a huge eye opener to us all. We have been reunited with 2 of sisters Eve Thompson & Sue Baulmanan. When our mother placed them up for adoption she believed that she was doing the right thing by them. Her greatest wish was for them to have good lives. But in our case the Government really did our mother huge injustice in at least one of these cases. (the other sister case seems to be a straight out adoption). Government bodies deciding to place one child with a family with no fellow up what so ever. This child could of been placed with her aunt & uncle but they were told the child had already been adopted out. We now know at the time our aunt & uncle applied to adopt her she was still in the care of the government. (Mum also applied to get her back and in the end had to sign adoption papers twice). Then my sister was placed in Forster home for 7 years before they adopted her. I for one feel that time has been stolen from us. Our right to have a relationship with this sister was taken from us. A home for the child with her mother or her aunt and uncle were all denied. I know good stories and bad stories about adoption. I fully understand both sides of the story. Lots of children have been placed in good loving homes. I for one know at least 2 case of friends who have adopted children out and have had their children find them once they came of age. Their adopted parents had the courage to tell them they were adopted. Both these young women now enjoy relationships with their birth mother and siblings. Really lovely to see these women interact with their birth mothers and family. But there is another side to adoption I am reading about now. A darker side that a lot of us are unaware of. Some parts I have been made aware of through my own interaction with my sisters and also reading my sister's adoption papers. What mum went through is unacceptable to us as her children. This book was sent to me by a new and dearly loved friend Vicki Lee Small and it is her story in her words. I am only half way through the book. Just wow!! Another side to consider about how and where a child is placed. (My new and very dear friend has helped me in more ways than she will ever know and for that I am truly grateful) Anyone looking for a great personal read about adoption, this will give you greater understanding of the road blockes that can be placed in front of child who is adopted. Further to what I have previous written which above. This is a wonderful read. I found it to be open and honest and spoken from the heart of the person writing it. As a child of a family who has been affected by adoption I am always interested in hearing opinions of adoptees. I know the author personally and even I was surprised to read some of the problems she faced in her journey to find her true family roots. I have always known the problems and road blocks that have been placed in the way of adoptees trying to find their birth families. However I must admit I found a lot of it surprising. (That doesn't happen to me too often). I do also feel what Vicki Lee Small has done with her work into the adoption world has made it much easier for the rest of us who have followed her. My sister did find some aspects of collecting information from the government difficult and tiresome but her journey has been by far much easier than Vicki Lee Small. For that I say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.
