25.01.2022 Australian Galleries Sydney invites you to the opening: Belynda Henry ‘to paint is to love’, Saturday 28 November 11am to 5pm, 15 Roylston Street, Paddington. All are welcome! To ensure the safety of our guests visitor numbers will be monitored and sign in will be required. . Belynda Henry’s latest exhibition, ‘to paint is to love’ is a personal and emotive response to the beauty, resilience and the vulnerability of our Australian landscape. Working en plein air around Syd...ney Harbour and from her studio lodged within the landscape, this exhibition includes Henry’s largest and most unrestrained paintings. The works range from small and intimate to a large 4 metre long triptych. . In this exhibition, Henry continues to experiment with and push her process of mark making as she documents emotive scenes of coastal Sydney landmarks such as Camp Cove, Shark Island and Seven Shillings Beach. Henry skilfully balances free flowing harmonies of colour and composition to create fragmented landscapes that are both vibrant and serene. However, this exhibition also speaks to Henry’s newfound leaning towards abstracted painting and the keen observer may also note sensual forms emerge. . The show also features the sounds of recorded bird calls from around the artist’s studio as well as a suspended sculptural installation by floral artist Tracey Deep. ‘to paint is to love’ is a sensory and immersive experience for audiences that provides a glimpse into Belynda Henry’s creative process as an artist embedded within nature of which she has a deep reverence for. . As New York art critic Nixon Marters said, ‘An abstracted landscape is a metaphor for the artist’s emotional landscape, not the physical one’. I must admit there is a lot of truth to that for me for now, particularly with this series of works, the exhibition and the subsequent book ‘To Paint Is To Love' these are my most revealing paintings to date. 24.01.2022 A FAMILY SELECTION - ONLINE EXHIBITION A Familys Selection presents a poignant collection of artworks, curated by the next generation of the Purves family during this recent time in isolation. . From a room weve become all too comfortable in, we reminisced on days and nights spent all together at the gallery. Some sat quietly contemplating, others turned to our online stock room and another took to the walls in our home for inspiration. Together we compiled a list of w...orks that spoke to us in the moment. . Creating this collection together not only helped the Purves family to stay connected, it provided them with a source of creative expression and inspiration during lockdown. We hope this very special exhibition will ignite your own imagination and inspire feelings of upliftment, connectedness, and hope. . 21.01.2022 FINAL WEEKEND Visit us in Sydney to see Bruce Latimers luminous exhibition Travel Paintings. Open today and tomorrow from 10am to 6pm, 15 Roylston Street, Paddington. This exhibition will conclude on the evening of Sunday September 27. . "I made these paintings in response to things seen on my travels in Europe. 21.01.2022 ARTIST FEATURE - DANIELLE CREENAUNE I work mainly with stone lithography, Mokulito and watercolour. For me,with stone lithographythere is a flow between the process, materials and image making. It’s very tactile, sensory and requires awareness. The materials have a history, the stone has had a life before you existed, there’s a sensitivity with marks and meditation in the pace of working, an attention to detail and patience required. It offers a very direct way of makin...g painterly and graphic marks within printmaking and possesses a rich gamut of tones and textures such as the reticulated washes. . Around 5 years ago I also started using plywood as a plate for the lithographic process. It’s a technique called Mokurito/Mokulito originating in Japan and it offers some elements of traditional lithography with an organic wood grain and the option to carve into the plate as with woodcut. I approach processes with curiosity, find out what works best for my imagery and then push and refine until I’m content with the results. These techniques offer me a way to work intuitively onto the matrix considering the use of a broad range of textures, strokes and implements to suggest the energy, light and contemplation I feel in landscape. @daniellecreenaune . Danielle Creenaune ‘Fragile States’ is now open for its final week, every day from 10am to 6pm until the evening of Sunday 6 December in our Print Room Gallery 28 Derby Street, Collingwood, Melbourne. 12.01.2022 ‘Ddraig’, ‘Roberto Fortuno’ and ‘Bluey’ are just three of the dynamic characters you will encounter in Rona Green’s current exhibition ‘A little bit’. This wonderfully vibrant show is open 7 days a week from 10am to 6pm in The Viewing Room, 1st Floor 28 Derby Street, Collingwood and can also be viewed via our website! . @ronagreenart will be in the gallery to meet and talk with visitors about her show on its final day: Sunday 6 December from 3pm to 5pm. To ensure the safety o...f our guests visitor numbers will be monitored and sign in will be required. . Rona Green’s technique is accomplished, but uncomplicated as she strives to maximise the impact of her images through simplicity of means. Although there is flippancy, humour and whimsicality in the work, her prints are incredibly seductive images, funky in their aesthetic and slightly menacing and confronting in their presence. Yet for all of their light-heartedness, they do hint at a secondary role as social commentary with a generous dose of satire and with the touch of the absurd. I suspect that each of us will bring to Rona Green's images our own emotional and cultural baggage. - Emeritus Professor Sasha Grishin, AM, FAHA . . . . . . . #art #ronagreen #printmaking #linocut #contemporaryart #anthropomorphism #tattoo #animals #modernart #visualart #artgallery #exhibition #melbourne See more

12.01.2022 After many successful years in Woolwich, the HarbourSculpture Award has found a new home in Balmain. This years exhibition will be located indoors at the historic Balmain Rowing Club overlooking Parramatta River on the edge of Elkington Park. Submissions for this award are open until 30 September 2020. Visit @harboursculpture for details! . The Judge for this years HarbourSculpture Award is celebrated artist Michael Snape. A selection of images his dynamic works from are... featured above. . Michael spoke with HarbourSculpture about what he is looking for in the winning artwork: . What am I looking for? What makes a submission stand out? Like everyone, I am looking to be moved, inspired, taken away. I am looking for signs of life. Art takes us out of it. That sounds kind of obvious, but it is rarer than youd think. I would prefer not to be shocked into taking my attention, and political intent is probably mostly better applied elsewhere. One-liners are out. Two sentences ok, but three-dimensional paragraphs are preferred. I would be moved by the depth of feeling expressed in a work. I would be absorbed by that which required being absorbed to make it. Anything too licked is out. The sculptor speaks on behalf of the capacity of the culture to be conscious and alive. The more that culture is reflected, the better the show will be. A good sculpture reflects a cultured community. Sculpture is not new. Its ancient. A work which reflects hard-won values will be noticed!... In summary: Signs of life. A voice. An urgency. Anything which catches, holds, from which I cannot turn away. Anything which employs the principles of unity, harmony, and clarity. That has genuinely asked itself, What does it mean to be alive? . 12.01.2022 FROM THE ARCHIVES Australian Galleries was established in Melbourne by Tam and Anne Purves in June 1956. The space was originally the Purves pattern manufacturing business in the bustling inner working class suburb of Collingwood. They supplied the all-important patterns to the local fashion industry which was a thriving industry in the warehouses of the surrounding streets. Together their vision and driving force resulted in the development of what was then, an extraordi...nary idea. They started a commercial art gallery to show the small group of culturally important post-war Australian artists emerging in Melbourne who at the time had nowhere to seriously show and sell their work. The first painters to exhibit at Australian Galleries included artists who went on to become some of Australias greatest ever, such as Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan, John Perceval and Albert Tucker. 11.01.2022 MARGIE SHEPPARD - ONLINE EXHIBITION Margie Sheppard’s new paintings and etchings show a transition to the most simple forms, leaving behind the figuration of her previous work. Simplicity and strength dominate. Some of Margie’s paintings are simply suspended rectangles of colour. They are spacious and transcend the everyday. The colours are luminous and become the subject of the paintings. . Her layered abstractions reveal surfaces hovering over more surfaces, densely colou...red yet pulsing radiantly. It is a world into which the viewer can fall, absorbed by its depths. Her many years as a printmaker informs her decisions and powerful sense of colour structure. . The etchings are purely abstract but have more visual elements for the viewer to read. Shape, texture and colour all play their part to give visual meaning. . This works on paper exhibition highlights the importance of drawing in the artists practice, with each beautiful tableau blurring the lines between imagination and memory, allowing us to see alternate perspectiv...es and endless possibilities. . 10.01.2022 Sydney photographer Greg Weight is blurring the boundaries between the reality of the photograph and the impressionistic act of painting in his current exhibition Big Tree Notes. The age-old tension between the two art cousins, photography and painting, has been resolved in a new way through Gregs creation of a unique series of paintographs. . The NSW coastal forests have replaced Weights previous muses, the night skies and landscapes of Central Australia. In these new wo...rks the textures and details of the colonial landscape of Hill End were followed by a celebration of coastal trees enhanced by the application of paint over photographs on canvas. ~ I dedicate this exhibition to my sister Diana Tansley Webber, 10.12.1934 - 30.8.2020. @gregweight . 09.01.2022 After 40 years working as an artist, I do not feel as a tourist or a visitor in the landscape but as a native, one who is part of this land and one who knows that if we do not look after it, we will destroy it and in turn it will destroy us. My works, while denoting elements such as earth and sky also speak of a ‘presence’, that is part of the day and night of our existence, part of a known reality but also an unknowable, timeless one." - G.W. 07.01.2022 MARGIE SHEPPARD - ONLINE EXHIBITION Abstraction allows me to glimpse a deeper truth and I now love to immerse myself in large abstract paintings, putting colours and shapes together in unusual combinations. Getting the colour, shapes, spacial relationships and surfaces ‘right’ is completely absorbing and inspires me to keep creating, innovating and experimenting. - @margie_sheppard_art, 2020 . Margie Sheppard’s new paintings and etchings show a transition to the most simp...le forms, leaving behind the figuration of her previous work. Simplicity and strength dominate. Some of Margie’s paintings are simply suspended rectangles of colour. They are spacious and transcend the everyday. The colours are luminous and become the subject of the paintings. . Her layered abstractions reveal surfaces hovering over more surfaces, densely coloured yet pulsing radiantly. It is a world into which the viewer can fall, absorbed by its depths. Her many years as a printmaker informs her decisions and powerful sense of colour structure. . The etchings are purely abstract but have more visual elements for the viewer to read. 07.01.2022 Danielle Creenaune ‘Fragile States’ is open 7 days a week from 10am to 6pm until Sunday 6 December. Print Room Gallery 28 Derby Street, Collingwood, Melbourne. This beautiful show can also be viewed in its entirety via the Current Exhibitions page at our website. . ‘In this exhibition, I work in the techniques of stone lithography and mokulito, because there is a flow between the process, materials and image making. Lithography offers me a very direct way of making painterly... marks within printmaking and carries with it a rich gamut of tones and textures such as reticulated washes and wood textures which mirror forms also present in nature. I walk and observe places while making quick sketches that later serve to situate myself back there with the movement, sounds and sensibilities. Back in the studio, I work on the matrix of stone or wood in a visceral manner creating a new landscape which taps into the feeling of being in that place.’ - @daniellecreenaune 2020. . 06.01.2022 Bruce Latimer Travel Paintings is open 7 days a week from 10am to 6pm, 15 Roylston Street, Paddington, Sydney until Sunday September 27. . "I made these paintings in response to things seen on my travels in Europe. At the time I dont think of them in terms of subject matter. Its only when I get home and examine my mountain of photos that possibilities appear the peculiarities of flamingos in the South of France, an unexplainable dried orange light fixture in a Berlin s...hop window or simplicity and power of Gerhard Richters stained glass in Cologne Cathedral. The process of visual improvisation begins by looking for some kind of sense by juxtaposing friendly but disparate components. Hopefully the combination succeeds in making the impossible seem possible. . These are oil paintings on copper a slippery and non-absorbent surface. I prefer to paint thinly so that the warm reflective metal at times appears, a reminder of the physicality of the object." - Bruce Latimer, 2020 . 03.01.2022 G.W. Bots deep connection to the Australian landscape resonates poignantly throughout her work. She conveys with masterful skill and great sensitivity the beauty, power and vulnerability of the bushland she has observed and explored for many decades. . Recently, Bot has been working in the studio, printing 15 linocuts to accompany the poem, Requiem by Anna Akhmatova. The elegy is one of the great literary works of the 20th century, written over three decades, between 1935 ...and 1961, in which the poet transformed her personal grief into a universal lament. . These images will be used to create an artists book in collaboration with Peter Pounder of Polar Bear Press. It will be in an edition of 10 copies so far 6 copies have been printed. Bot writes,It took me a year to come to terms with the poem and be able to create my own parallel requiem before I could say, in Akhmatovas words, Could one ever describe this? and I answered, I can. These images can be read as a requiem for the loss and devastationof our land through droughts, fires and floods, rampant development and the weakness of governments that refuse to acknowledge and act on climate change and now a pandemic for the loss of our culture here in Australia and universally. . 02.01.2022 Jimmy Rix’s beautiful sculptural exhibition ‘Domestic and Feral’ instills in the viewer such a sense of hope, joy and connectedness to the natural world. This exhibition is open 7 days a week from 10am to 6pm, 35 Derby Street, Collingwood, Melbourne until Sunday 6 December and can also be viewed in full via our website. . I have a love of all animals and the domestic animals in this exhibition are of our own pets, as well as pets I have encountered in the past. I like to ske...tch, making a lot of small images on a page. These become my sculpture. With this show I have gone from drawing into fabrication very quickly as I wanted to be in the moment; you could say that I stayed in the flow. . Often something gets entombed inside the sculpture during the making and can be heard when one shakes the work. Other times I like to place objects inside sculptures, I believe this give the work a soul. - Jimmy Rix, 2020 . . . . . . . . . . #art #jimmyrix #sculpture #contemporaryart #animals #nature #birds #cortensteel #steel #bronze #modernart #pets #contemporaryaculpture #artgallery #melbourne See more
