19.01.2022 Judie Alingou, sister in charge at Madang Town Clinic, knows the importance of regular health patrols. She has recently been able to start regular health patrols, allowing her and her team to deliver basic health care services including immunisation to remote communities. Sr Alingou and her team have not been able to conduct regular patrols for the past nine years. ... That changed last year when the Accelerated Immunisation and Health Systems Strengthening (AIHSS) program started in the province. The AIHSS program is a PNG Government initiative supported by the Governments of Australia, New Zealand and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance with technical support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. The rollout of immunisation activities will help protect babies under one year of age against diseases. The program is being delivered in Madang by World Vision International in partnership with the Madang Provincial Health Authority. #PNGAusPartnership

12.01.2022 A world first for PNG! Henao Rakatani, a medical laboratory scientist from Divine Word University has achieved a level one status from level four after successfully completing an external competency training for malaria microscopists in the country. She was among 12 other microscopists from around the country to participate in a World Health Organization (WHO) virtual malaria competency assessment in Port Moresby from November 9-13.... The virtual training was conducted by WHO consultant Lieutenant Ken Lilley with cofacilitation by Central Public Health Laboratory (CPHL) quality assurance manager Ernest Velemu and malaria scientist Dorothy Abala. He connected with the participants in Port Moresby via video link from the Australian Defence Force Malaria and Infectious Diseases Institute. The training included representatives from Modilon, Kundiawa, Vunapope and Tari hospitals, Yagaum and Butuwin health centres, the PNG Institute of Medical Research, DWU, and the CPHL Malaria and Quality Assurance units. Each year, CPHL conducts two external competency assessments of malaria microscopists supported through the Australia-China-PNG Trilateral Malaria Project. Through species identification and parasite count, the assessments allow them to grade, identify and map the gaps in malaria microscopists in PNG and to plan strategic approaches to address and improve malaria diagnosis throughout the country.

12.01.2022 Ace in Space That’s what they say on the footy field when they realise Hewago Ace Oea has bolted away from his defenders once again and is perfectly positioned to take the mark. With the announcement that he has joined the Gold Coast Suns he’s just made history by being the first AFL Papua New Guinea player to be signed to a top-tier #AFL club. ... In 2017, when Ace was just 15 years old, he received the best on ground medal when Papua New Guinea won its back to back AFL International Cup grand final. PNG remain international AFL champions. At 16 he became the first PNG player to join the AFL academy, and has worked his way with sacrifices made and support from PNG and Australian friends and family to professional player status. From Gordons to Gold Coast, Ace has come a long way. We can’t wait to see what magic Ace has up his sleeve in 2021. #PNGAusPartnership AFL

Stella first entered the Department of Transport as an Economics graduate in 2001. She won an Australia Award Scholarship in 2009 to study a Master’s in Project Management at The University of Queensland. On her return to the Department, she became the Assistant Secretary for Budget and Planning before accepting the promotion to her current role in 2018, making her the first woman to reach the level of FAS in the Department of Transport. You’ve got to be well prepared and on top of things because you have people out there challenging you when you are trying to introduce change.
