09.01.2022 This week we were invited to the Qld Weapons Meeting on the new Gel blaster related legislation changes. In reality no alot of changes for people with common sense. This also includes gel blasters, replicas and deactivated firearms. Deactivated Category D, R and H that were once real firearms still requires a collectors license. In brief this came about as a result of common sense not being applied by young males who thought it was right to run around in public with these it...ems and cause unwanted alarm requiring police intervention. Its always been an offence to cause alarm. An idiot with a gel blaster has that ability. The changes put gel blasters, deactivated and replicas as restricted items. You don't need to be licensed for a restricted item even fluffy hand cuffs fall into this area. You need to demonstrate a genuine interest. Which can include collectors license, clubs and personal interests. As they should, these items do require some security. This idea being that people do not get hold of them and run amok or get alarmed. Serious issues that led to police action included a teenager walking around with a replica strapped to his hip, siting on a verandah in full public and pointing it around, shooting at animals and people in the street and leaving a M16 type on the back seat of a car in a public car park. They do not need to be stored in a gun safe or vault. So kept in a secure house out of reach is acceptable. When being transported they need to be in a bag or case out of sight. Public places like RSL's can also display them by putting them in a glass display or similar. The weapons licensing web page will be updated when the items take affect.
