21.01.2022 The Ziggy Stardust Tribute Moth (Thalaina clara) is well camouflaged as an Acacia-feeding caterpillar, and an unabashed spotlight hog as an adult. This species ...is supposed to emerge in May but has clearly screwed up and arrived to the party early. Clara's Satin Moth (Thalaina clara). 20.01.2022 Today in insect fashion: Hats that eat you. This Orange Caterpillar Wasp (Netelia producta) parasitises caterpillars. Specifically, the female stings and paraly...ses the Freddy, the caterpillar host, laying an egg behind Freddy's head. The wasp hatches and sort of chills for a bit until the Freddy pupates, at which point the wasp larva eats him and takes over his house, telling all his friends that he's definitely absolutely Freddy. 16.01.2022 I'm up in our tropical Far North for these next two weeks, so watch this space to accidentally learn some science and see some incredible Beasties of the Northe...rn Wilds. This one is the rest of yesterday's Mr Burns caterpillar, the Four O'Clock Moth (Dysphania numana). The name references the tiny wristwatches the moths wear as adults, and also the fact that they are brightly coloured and diurnal, flapping around in the afternoon and tricking us into thinking they are super fuzzy butterflies. As larvae, the caterpillars strike this absolutely bizarre yoga pose illustrated below, sitting stock-still at a 45 degree angle for hours at a time. Before protractors were invented, the Four O'Clock Moth caterpillar was a highly sought-after commodity for measuring angles, and is still used by northern Australian schoolchildren today. 10.01.2022 The Bark Cockroach (Laxta sp.) is sometimes known as the Trilobite Cockroach, because trilobites are awesome and we wish they were still around. Instead we're s...tuck with our goddamn living native fauna, with such boring adaptations as impenetrable chitinous armour. 03.01.2022 This is what the hopes and dreams of the Rain Moth (Trictena sp.) look like close up. This is a huge lady moth that emerged as an adult after a torrential downp...our. Her wingspan reaches up to 160mm, and she lays record-breaking numbers of eggs (over 40,000 at most ... better get busy).
