14.01.2022 Large numbers of my constituents in Wills who are Pensioners are worried about the increasing challenges of living on a fixed income amidst the rising cost of l...iving. Many may not be aware of the dirty deal between the Greens political party and the Liberal party; voting with them in the Senate to pass laws that would tighten to the pension assets test. As a result, come January 1st 2017, many Pensioners will be kicked off the pension or have their incomes significantly reduced. If you manage to still receive some benefits, pensioners in Wills will still have to face the challenge of having their income eaten up by high rates in the City of Moreland. The final insult is the Turnbull Government ripping money off pensioners by failing to adjust deeming rates to take into account the drastically low interest rates that are also providing retirees with extremely modest returns on their nest eggs. Today I called upon the Government to act immediately and provide relief to those who have contributed so much throughout their lives. They can do this immediately by adjusting deeming rates to fall in-line with the current cash rate. Labor believes that a review into the pension assets test needs to examine the current interaction between the pension and superannuation systems, and how the pension system might be improved to more effectively encourage superannuation and other savings now and into the future.
