22.01.2022 Is your surgeon a member of ASPS? The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons is a membership organisation with the mission to provide the highest quality plastic surgery care to all Australians. In order to achieve this, it is vital that our members uphold high ethical standards when providing care to patients and within their broader professional environment. All members sign a Code of Practice which provides specific guidance on the professional ethics and behaviour required of members of our society. Within those codes is the ASPS Ethical Framework read more here: http://ow.ly/5LdC50CaWQ8
22.01.2022 Considering cosmetic surgery? Here's why you should choose a Specialist Plastic Surgeon. Making a decision to undertake cosmetic surgery should never be undertaken lightly. Unlike a new hairstyle, cosmetic surgery is a permanent change to your appearance and is not risk-free. That’s why taking time to research your choice of surgeon may be the best investment you make, advises Dr Dan Kennedy, President of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). It may also h...elp consumers avoid the adverse outcomes, that, tragically, too many Australians have experienced from botched surgeries, cardiac episodes and even death. In Australia, anyone with a basic medical degree can perform cosmetic surgery without undergoing specialist surgical training and assessment accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC), the body that has oversight over all medical practitioners in Australia. 17.01.2022 When is a tummy tuck medically beneficial? Without a doubt, abdominoplasty offers plenty of cosmetic rewards. 14.01.2022 Did you know that Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world, with more than two-thirds of the Australian population likely to develop a skin cancer of some kind during their lives? Skin cancer usually occurs in people who have been exposed to too much ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. Skin cancer needs to be treated promptly as it can be just as life threatening as any other cancer if left untreated. The danger of skin cancer is that it can spread (me...tastasise) to other parts of the body if treatment is not undertaken. Most skin cancers are removed surgically, by a Specialist Plastic Surgeon or a dermatologist. To learn more about skin cancer and skin cancer prevention, please go to http://bit.ly/2N322xm
14.01.2022 Specialist Plastic Surgeons are accredited by the Commonwealth Government of Australia, through the Australian Medical Council, to perform all cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. All Specialist Plastic Surgeons must undergo extensive medical education and training in order to be accredited. 14.01.2022 Did you know that many ASPS members volunteer their time to support Interplast? Interplast is an amazing organisation that is changing futures through medical care and training. In Australia and New Zealand, we often take it for granted that if we ever need medical care, we will be treated quickly and effectively by highly qualified doctors, nurses, surgeons and other specialists. But right next door in the Asia Pacific region, a lack of resources combined with limited train...ing means people with repairable conditions are often not treated fast enough or well enough if they are treated at all. The numbers are almost impossible to grasp. An estimated 143 million people each year go without the surgical attention they urgently need, according to the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery. More than 99 million of those cases are in Asia and Oceania, where Interplast works. Plastic surgery has the power to change the future of entire communities, yet for millions of those who need it most, it is simply not available or not affordable. Of course, no single organisation could ever help that many people, which is why in addition to free reconstructive surgery Interplast delivers high-quality training for local medical professionals in each of their 17 partner countries, in response to their requests. "We do this in close collaboration with our local partners and a network of organisations in Australia and New Zealand. Our training programs help strengthen health systems by giving professionals the skills they need to restore function and hope to people affected by burns, tumours, hand and foot injuries, congenital anomalies and more. In the meantime, our volunteer medical teams work tirelessly to help as many individuals as they can." Read more https://interplast.org.au/learn-more/ See more

12.01.2022 No story better illustrates the powerful difference plastic surgeons make than little Maddox Porter. It was Easter Sunday 2018. Six-year-old Maddox Porter was sitting on his mum Shelleys lap on a ride-on lawnmower on the familys property in Gratton, Queensland. They hit a bump, turned too quickly and Maddox fell off. Shelley heard her son scream and knew something was horribly wrong. Maddoxs hand was caught in the mower blades. He was missing 3 fingers and his whole hand w...as almost detached. Panicked and desperate, Shelley managed to dial triple-0. An RACQ Lifeflight Rescue team arrived shortly after. As soon as the paramedics saw Maddoxs hand they knew they had to get him to Lady Cliento Hospital for an emergency operation. Maddox and his family spent the next four and a half weeks in hospital where he had surgery every second day. Maddoxs injury was extreme. If he had suffered it 20 years ago, he would almost certainly have lost his hand. But his plastic surgeons didnt give up on him. Using cutting edge procedures, they managed to save part of his hand. Hes still missing fingers, but the team have now turned their attention to one day rebuilding his thumb and top of his hand. Thanks to the work Maddoxs plastic surgeons have done, hes back to doing the things he loves: building Lego, swimming with his little brother and chasing his dream of becoming a professional BMX rider.

09.01.2022 Eyelid surgery, also known as a blepharoplasty, is a procedure that removes excess fatty tissue and/or loose skin surrounding the eyes to give the area a more rejuvenated appearance. The aim of eyelid reduction surgery is to improve facial appearance and reduce the signs of ageing by treating: - Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision... - Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids - Bags under the eyes - Droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris (coloured portion of the eye) - Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid Eyelid reductions are one of the most common plastic surgery operations. They can be done alone or at the same time as other facial surgery, such as facelift surgery or brow lift surgery. 08.01.2022 #plasticsurgery Is your selected surgeon qualified to be called a Specialist Plastic Surgeon? Currently in Australia, it is legal for any doctor with a basic medical degree to perform surgery. Only Specialist Plastic Surgeons, have a minimum of 12 years medical and surgical education, and 5 years of specialist postgraduate training.... IMPORTANT TO KNOW: When making your decision in selecting your surgeon, remember that the Medical Board of Australia states that the Specialist Plastic Surgeon title can only be used by Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) approved specialist surgeons in the recognised specialty of Plastic Surgery. 07.01.2022 The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons is working with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) to protect the use of the title of ‘surgeon’. While some may dismiss this as a turf war between plastic surgeons and cosmetic practitioners who use the title, this initiative is regrettably necessary because of an important public health issue that directly impacts patient safety. http://ow.ly/NpPy50CaW7a

05.01.2022 ASPS member Dr Moncrieff explains why signing the petition to see the Government reinstate access to the tummy tuck Medicare item number for women who suffer from life-long problems, including back pain and incontinence, from abdominal injury during pregnancy, is so important.
04.01.2022 One thing you may not realise is that in Australia a wide range of medical practitioners perform cosmetic surgery but not all have undergone the same level of training and assessment. So knowing more about the difference between practitioners can help inform your choice. Did you know that it’s not illegal for doctors with only a basic medical degree to perform surgeries? So while you do your research keep in mind that the title ‘cosmetic surgeon’ has no official recognition ...by government regulators, it is commonly adopted by practitioners who perform cosmetic surgeries but who may have no more surgical training than your GP. Essentially they are giving themselves a ‘made-up’ title. All ASPS Surgeons are FRACS qualified and they are the only doctors that can call themselves a Specialist Plastic Surgeon and earning that title involves many years of rigorous training and ongoing examination read more here http://ow.ly/Prdd50CeSH6 #specialistplasticsurgeon#patientsafety#FRACS See more

01.01.2022 Specialist Plastic Surgeons undergo years of training and ongoing assessment to qualify for their specialist title. They are highly trained, highly qualified specialist surgeons who can safely undertake complex procedures to repair, restore or enhance all parts of a patient’s body, says Dr Kennedy. In addition to a six year medical degree, a Specialist Plastic Surgeon, has undertaken and successfully completed 5 years post-graduate specialty training in Plastic, Cosmetic an...d Reconstructive Surgery and is qualified through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. We advise all consumers to look for the ‘FRACS’ title after a surgeon’s name to ensure they’ve had the highest level of specialist surgical training recognized by Australian medical regulators. This is effectively a ‘stamp of excellence’ that minimizes your risks and maximizes you opportunity for a positive outcome, says Dr Kennedy read more http://ow.ly/9yq150CrBXR See more
