25.01.2022 Songwriters Night - 25th July - Fabulous! What a great night of entertainment had by all. 10 songwriters shared their view of the world through lyric and melody. Songs about loss, anger, explaining how a man needs to forgive, being careful with your own personal data on line, love, family, dogs, life, the bush, the land, change, and more. Congratulations to those who came along for the first time....and for some, the very first time to perform......let alone perform their... own song. As a pub gig person, I have spent years not really being able to play the songs that I write, because we all know that pub gigs are for singing along and playing what others know. I am very proud to be able to present the songwriters night so that the song becomes the focus. Thanks also to the audience who supported the singers ..and each other. Pictures to follow. See more
23.01.2022 Congratulations Gippsland....from all walks of life...passion for telling stories. John, Phillip, Peter (accompanied by Penelope), Arthur, Alex, Warren, Penelope, Lisa, Peter (and his daughter on harmonies), Rose (accompanied by Dan). Just a note - sometimes I put up video's - sometimes they turn out ok and other times they do not. At no stage are they put up because they were the ones that were best or worst. Just trying to share. If, however you do not want yours shared, let me know. Maria. P.S. Huge shout out to the participants from the Wild at Heart Community Arts group - Thanks for sharing.
22.01.2022 Hello to all- due to a variety of reasons - the songwriters night tonight will not be going ahead. Please continue writing and preparing and I look forward to hearing your creations in 2020. Enjoy the Christmas season, notice all the wonderful things/ people you have in your life, spare a thought for those who have lost it all this year and keep those individuals who will go without family time to serve those in need this summer in your thoughts. Thank you for your talent and your willingness to share. Maria
21.01.2022 Friday night I went to Jak's Music in Warragul. What a little gem! Looks like a very large shed...go in, music shop! Behind the music shop (still inside the shed), is a performance space that is intimate enough to feel like your lounge room whilst hosting many people as the audience. I am told by the folks who own it, that they are developing the other half of the space as a band performance space. Anyway, they have a monthly open mic night and we are in discussions about a potential Saturday night Songwriters night later on in the year.......if you are in Warragul on a Friday night, do yourself a favour and check it out. 20.01.2022 Hey all, I am heading to Warragul to check out a venue for a potential songwriters night down there - Will let you know how I go.
17.01.2022 I would like to write something inspiring such as.. fall down 7 times and stand up 8.... or... when you choose what you want to be when you are grown up, choose kind- but I can’t think of anything inspiring so instead I will say that I will attempt to host a songwriters night this month - not sure if that will be live on zoom type of link or if you will submit your own video- internet speed etc might be issues for some. I will let you know more information when I know some. Perhaps some amazing music has been written in the beginning months of 2020- I look forward to listening to some stories- stay safe! Maria- please let me know if you would be interested in this opportunity and if you would prefer to submit something or attempt to be live -
16.01.2022 If you are new to this process, come along, put your name on the board and sing your songs. You have time for 3 songs - if you only have one, that is great. If you have limited time, let me know and I will attempt to pencil you in for a time. There will be a PA system, and 2 microphones. (room for guitars to be plugged in if necessary). If you know others who write - no matter if professional or amateur, invite them along and share the journey.... Remember, this is a new initiative in the Gippsland area. If we can support it, we can perhaps keep it. Keep writing. Maria.
15.01.2022 Happy Father's Day to all those dads out there. I have been a little tardy in regard to loading images/ footage from the most recent Songwriters Night. Some of the tartiness is due to internet issues, but unfortunately....some of it is all mine. Sorry! So...the night was great. There were not a heap of people for audience, and not a lot of people as songwriters. But, we filled the night with originals and the people who were there stayed, or went for dinner and then retu...rned. We had some fun and some silliness and talked a bit about the business of songwriting and the market that we become part of. We chatted about copywrite, APRA, royalties and the difficulties in protecting your songs. We laughed quite a lot in regard to clapping all over the room, but that is between those of us who were there. I personally enjoyed the company of Peter and Phillip and after the night was over, the small audience that came and went, commented on the fact that they had not been to something like this before and really liked it. They were surprised at what they heard, appreciated that songs have to be written, and were glad they accidentally found us. Peter and Phillip, thank you for your attendance. Congratulations on owning the stage. Hope to see you all next time. Maria. See more
14.01.2022 Hey there one and all. Just a shout out to remind you that this Thursday night at Flangans is our next songwriters Open mic night. If you are coming along, please respond to the post. If you have a friend who has not come along yet, and you bring them to perform, I might even shout you a drink. Don't forget that if you have written lyrics, you are more than welcome to perform them on the stage as well. I so look forward to the stories that go along with each song. We ...are still tying out the venue. Please come along and give feedback about this space as a songwriter. Thank you so very much to those of you who have already graced the stage at Flanagans and have moved us with your stories. You are the people who change the world by doing... Finally, keep writing. Every person has a story to tell..painful, joyful, uncertainty, sadness...everyone of them different yet unite the listener whilst connecting in a way that no other form of art work can. Keep creating and enabling people to say ...'you know, that song.....I think they wrote is about me......." See you Thursday night. Maria.
14.01.2022 Songwriters sharing their wares on Thursday night.
10.01.2022 Hey there. I hope you have had lots of time putting pen to paper and coming up with lyric after lyric. This Thursday night come along and share your talents at the monthly Wax Lyrical songwriters night. If you have lyrics and no music, that is ok. You never know when there might be someone with music and no lyrics. Just wanted to say a huge thanks to Hilary Reynolds from Gippsland FM for the interview space on the radio this morning. Always a pleasure to chat to such a ...positive lady. So...Thursday night 7-10, Flanagans Bar. See you there! Maria
09.01.2022 Hello! this is just a short message to let everyone know that the songwriters night is not on this month but should resume in November. Keep writing and keep believing that what you want to write about, others may want to hear. Maria.
06.01.2022 What a great group of people turned up for Thursday night at Flanagan's. Whether it was Johns stories about his daughter, job and music, or Jack's traditional style, people listened carefully. Kevin, Arthur and Fred sang originals about a variety of Gippsland and beyond, Karla sang one original but assures me that she will come prepared next time with more. Marya presented 2 originals and felt them deeply. Rob had been to a songwriters workshop, and bravely shared his initi...al attempts at writing lyrics. Congratulations to all songwriters- We all know that music makes the world go round, and we- the entertainers can take people on an emotional journey....but, we can't without the songs. Thank you all for whatever stage you are in your journey of writing. You are more valuable than you know. Thank you also to the supporters of the writers - the audience. It truly would not be the same without you. Remember, that success is not about who gets the contract, but the person who truly values what they write. Thanks again and I look forward to hearing new material (and some old) next time. Oh yeah, I sang a couple of originals as well. Finally a huge thank you to the songwriters who are reaching out to other songwriters to say come along and sing. If we continue to reach out, we build a strong network of support. Huge thank you's all round - hope to see you next time. Maria. See more
06.01.2022 Hi all - Don't forget to sharpen the pencils and finish the lyric...next songwriters night is this Thursday at Flanagans. Thanks so far to those committed songwriters who have graced the stage and ensured entertainment. Some of you have said that you are attending this week - if you can confirm that via fb or any other way, I will 'lock you in.' I look forward to hearing the new and the old. Without the song, there are no singers........songwriters are essential! Keep writing, keep believing, keep enjoying!
