25.01.2022 Nice pictures from the Swedish Nationals Two weeks ago, the Swedish Nationals were held in Vejbystrand, near Torekov, the place where the 505 Worlds 2020 shou...ld have been sailed. 30 teams competed in quite a strong breeze. It became very clear which teams were ready for that challenge. Team Wolfgang Hunger/Holger Jess was outstanding in the regatta and won comfortably, 6 points ahead of their compatriots Tim and Finn Böger. The skilled Danish mixed team Fabiola and Michael Wonteerghem were in third place, only 2 points after Böger. Fourth Jan Sugman, DEN, with his new crew Christian Limbrecht Mogensen. Best Swedish team and thus crowned Swedish champions, Tomas Grundel/Johan Strömdahl from Stockholm. There are lots of nice pictures from the event. You find them on the home page of the arranging club SS Delfinen. https://idrottonline.se/SSDelfinenVejbystran//ImagesPhotos The small but very ambitious club made the regatta become a big success, both off-shore and onshore. The photos shown here are by Lars Lindgren, normally crewing for Tomas Franzén in SWE 9222
24.01.2022 Over the past two days, 5 x 505’s have been battling it out to become the King of Bramble Bay at Sandgate Yacht Club QLD. The first three races were held on Saturday with some exciting 15-18 knot winds. The first win of the day went to one of our favourite young skippers Chris Gregg and his dad Ian, with Nigel Lott and Bob Franks taking a close second. These teams switched it up for the next two races with Nigel and Bob taking the lead, while Chris and Ian nipped at their h...eels. Sunday brought very different conditions with light 5-8 knot breezes for a single long distance race where Chris and Ian Gregg came home with the win! Check out the pictures below to see the winners being presented with their trophy by Sandgate Yacht Club Commodore Chris Howell. Congratulations team!
24.01.2022 One of our very own 505 sailors has just begun one of the greatest adventures on earth. BorisHerrmannRacing from Hamburg, Germany, well known around the competitive international 505 scene, has embarked on the Vendée Globe aboard Seaexplorer - Yacht Club de Monaco. One of the greatest sailing races around the world, non stop and without assistance, the Vendee Globe is called the Everest of the sea. The 24,296 mile revolution was accomplished in 74 days and three hours during ...the last edition. This intense test of skill and perseverance has an added level of excitement this time, as hydrofoils have been implemented in a number of competing boats, including the Seaexplorer. The boats all measure 60 feet and with their large sail area, are classified as the most powerful monohulls on the planet led by a solo skipper. They can go over 30 knots in downwind conditions! Competing in the Vendee Globe has long been a dream of Boris Herrmann. During his sailing career, Boris has placed top 10 in the 2006 and ’07 505 World Championships and won the German 505 Nationals in 2007. He holds several records at sea, has completed three circumnavigations and won (with Felix Oehme) the Portimao Global Ocean Race in the Class 40, and has done so much more. Boris’ team, founded by his long time friend and keen sailor Pierre Casiraghi, Prince Alberts nephew, has an added component to the race project. Boris Herrmann will race with an ocean sensor while sailing through the Southern Ocean. This onboard laboratory measures ocean CO2, PH, salinity and water temperature. In partnership with the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik, Geomar and Ifremer, this data will be used around the world. Boris defines himself as a committed environmental activist so this twofold sporting and scientific challenge is particularly important to him. This Vendee Globe is shaping up to be one of the most exciting races in history so be sure to follow along with videos, a tracking map, photos, articles and much more on the official Vendee Globe website and app. www.vendeeglobe.org/en Let’s watch this thrilling adventure and cheer on one of our own 505ers!

23.01.2022 A hot weekend of sailing at Toronto Amateur Sailing Club as part of the 505 NSW State Titles series. Temps in the 40's didn't dampen the spirit of crews, includ...ing 3 boats from S.A. Sunday the breeze really kicked in and Marks Pt gauge took gusts of 50+ knots. All are safe and back on shore but not before some flying reaches and a swim or two. 21.01.2022 Sailor Spotlight! Allow us to introduce one of Australia’s top female 505 sailors Amy Mulkearns! Many of you will recognise her current boat ‘General Lee’ 8877. Amy’s 505 journey started in her final year of high school. She knew about the class as her dad used to sail them and praised the 505 as a ‘wonderful and well-balanced boat’. She had been sailing Flying 11’s before she attended the Combined High Schools regatta at Belmont where she and some friends decided to sail ...a 505 three-up for a bit of fun. Amy fell in love with the boat, thinking it felt like an oversized, faster Flying 11. Suffice it to say she was hooked. A few years ago she travelled to Annapolis to compete in the 2017 505 Worlds. Her first international 505 regatta only made her fall in love with the class even more. The friendly, social atmosphere in the boat park, highly competitive sailing on the water and making friends from all over the world made the regatta a memorable one. However, the moment that will forever stand out as the highlight of the regatta was when her now-husband Justin Mulkearns, proposed on the end of the sailing club wharf on their last night in Annapolis. Unfortunately, not every regatta can be quite as magical. In February 2017 at the annual Heaven Can Wait regatta held in Toronto, Amy and Justin started the race trawling for prawns with their spinnaker over the bow. In an effort to avoid repeating that first kite set, on the next set, Justin hoisted the kite VERY enthusiastically and appeared to require a lot of room for his swinging arms. BANG! Amy copped a fist to the face followed shortly by a bleeding nose. According to Amy, the best part of 505 sailing is the competitive racing and great onshore social and friendly atmosphere. Everyone always willing to share and help with rigging and sailing tips/tricks. Nothing is a secret. When we asked Amy what she would recommend about the 505 to upcoming young sailors, she replied, 505 sailors are always willing to get more sailors into the class. If you’re thinking about getting into the class, feel free to get in contact with the association and I’m sure we can arrange for you to have a go on a 505. When I first started sailing 505s after sailing 29ers, I was overwhelmed by the amount of ropes that were on board. Honestly, once you’ve been out a few times sailing it all starts to make sense and there’s always someone you can ask for help. Amy and Justin also recently welcomed their beautiful daughter Isla to the world! Little Isla is already spending time on the water, and from the looks of it loving it! Maybe there’ll be some 505 sailing in her future too
