25.01.2022 Late last year, Biogen announced the Biogen EMBARK study to assess the long-term safety and efficacy of aducanumab for those previously enrolled. This study was initiated after the previous studies showed such encouraging results. On August 27th the Australian Alzheimer’s Research Foundation enrolled the first patient onto Biogen EMBARK, officially the first participant in Australia. A great achievement for our Clinical Trials Division!

20.01.2022 Biogen has completed the submission of a Biologics License Application (BLA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the approval of aducanumab, an investigational treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. If approved, aducanumab would become the first therapy to reduce the clinical decline of Alzheimer’s disease and would also be the first therapy to demonstrate that removing amyloid beta resulted in better clinical outcomes. The Australian Alzheimer’s Research Foundation has been a part of the Biogen ENGAGE study since it commenced back in 2017 and also took part in the Biogen EVOLVE study early in 2019. We are thrilled that there have been such promising results for aducanumab. We will soon be starting the Biogen EMBARK study, allowing continued access for those who previously participated in the earlier ENGAGE study.

13.01.2022 Did you know #dementia is still the overall leading cause of death for women in Australia? This #WomensHealthWeek, is an important time to encourage and empower all women to take control of their health. It’s also a good reminder that you can’t take care of others if you aren’t taking care of yourself. A yearly preventive checkup with your doctor is a great time to see how you’re doing and discuss your cognitive health!

10.01.2022 The holidays are a time when family and friends come together, but the holiday season can cause mixed feelings for a family affected by Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia. While typically a time for celebration, families may experience a sense of loss for the way things used to be. Sadly, nearly 450,000 Australians will be suffering with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia this Christmas. Without a medical breakthrough, the number of people living with dementia ...in Australia is expected to increase to 589,807 within the next 10 years. We hope our ongoing research will play a vital role in the continuing journey towards an Alzheimer’s free world for the benefit of our whole community. Thank you for helping us in our fight to save memories this year. We wish you all a safe Christmas and a Happy New Year.
