22.01.2022 Vale Dr Alan Brissenden AM We are very sad to hear of the passing of our friend Dr Alan Brissenden AM, long standing committee member, and former President of T...he Friends of the State Library of South Australia from 1994-2000. His Presidency had a significant effect on the direction and approach the Friends adopted. He was also a key member of the Friends’ Australiana Publications sub-committee. Before joining the Friends as President, Alan taught English at The University of Adelaide (1963-94), and edited Bibliofile between 1997-2008. A Shakespearian scholar and dance writer, he was a Governor of the Adelaide Festival of Arts (1981-94) and was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1996 for services to the arts. Geoff Strempel, Director State Library of South Australia, says Alan was a true friend to the State Library, who gave his time and expertise as a valuable member of the Friends. He is very highly regarded by all those who worked with him and he will be missed greatly. Our deepest sympathies to his family".

20.01.2022 Martha Berkeley, c 1854, 'The artist and her family, Adelaide'. Reproduced in our new book TRAILBLAZERS: 100 inspirational South Australian women, by Carolyn Co...llins and Roy Eccleston. 'Martha Berkeley’s work was little known during her lifetime and remained so for decades after her death. This changed in the early 1990s when 40 of her works were discovered. A retrospective exhibition of her work, along with that of her sister Theresa, was held at the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1994, curated by Jane Hylton. 'Today, Martha Berkeley is recognised not only as one of South Australia’s most significant early colonial painters, but as one of Australia’s most important portrait painters of the colonial period.' You can read Martha Berkeley's story, along with those of many other memorable women, in TRAILBLAZERS.

08.01.2022 Our bookbinders do such amazing work!

07.01.2022 Make sure you pick up a copy of our next publication "Adelaide, Queen City of the South". First published in 1907 this charming glimpse of an Edwardian metropolis reveals a city with much to be proud of architecturally, socially and economically after a mere 70 years of settlement. The main pleasure is visual with over 400 photographs of major public buildings, churches, and parks and gardens, alongside advertisements for wine, soap, furniture, leather goods, biscuits, glass, timber mills and motor works. The book is a delight to explore because it reminds the reader of Adelaide’s elegant form and a rich history of manufacturing which has sadly declined only in recent years.

05.01.2022 "....And sometimes you find books with yellowed, stiff pages. The old dog-eared folds break off in triangles, flutter to the floor. These books can’t be helped by simple repairsthey’re acidified, dying, and the opposite of unique. In fact, they’re examples of a large-scale catastrophe that’s been quietly building in libraries for decades....".
