16.01.2022 Every piece of plastic ever made still exists in the world somewhere in some form. With 8 million tons of plastic entering our ocean every year it is estimated ...150 million tons is currently circulating in our marine environments. Over time plastics that enter our oceans become degraded from the sun, salt and water and break down into smaller plastics - microplastics. These smaller plastics are making their way into the stomachs of our sea birds, our marine life causing harm death and further up the food chain, us. Microplastics are now bring found in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. Plastic pollution knows no boarders in our oceans and it requires global action. We need action from governments, manufacturers, businesses and communities - working together. Working together for change. Be part of the change. Do not litter. When you see it pick it up Share to help us spread the awareness. #coastalwastewarriors #globalaction #donotlitter #circulareconomy #globalcommitment #globalcitizen #recycleright #saynotosingleuseplastics #plasticoceans #inthistogether #plasticfreeocean #keepourbeachesclean #environment #community #thereisnoplanetb #reducewaste #beachcleanup #reducereuserecycle #endplasticpollution #nature #oceanlitter #choosetoreuse #cleanupaustralia #marinedebris #keepaustraliabeautiful #keepmandurahbeautiful #mandurah #westernaustralia
13.01.2022 The amount of platypus habitat in Australia has shrunk by 22% in 30 years and the animal should now be listed as a nationally threatened species, according to new research.
11.01.2022 WIRES volunteer Natalie from Nimbin was caring for 2 Tawny Frogmouth orphans, they were out in a flight aviary learning to fly when she noticed that an adult Ta...wny Frogmouth was talking to the little orphans in the aviary at night. Having observed the adult sitting very close to the aviary first on a star picket just 2 meters away from the aviary, then the following morning sitting on a chair leaning against the aviary where it spent the rest of the day assuming it's "I am really a tree branch" pose. After Natalie went into the aviary to feed the fledglings they soon moved down to a branch that was at the same level as the adult sitting on the chair outside. It seemed that the adult Tawny Frogmouth really had a serious interest in these juveniles! Since the little ones were also trying to get closer to the adult Natalie figured, despite not speaking fluent Tawny herself, it wasn't saying anything mean to them. Natalie named the adult Big T. That night at dusk Natalie decided it was worth seeing if Big T would adopt the little ones, they were now capable of flight. She put the 2 fledglings outside the aviary. Big T flew to a nearby tree and called them up. They both managed to fly up to Big T and soon all 3 were sitting together. As soon as it was dark Big T took off. The two orphans flew around and ended up in different trees. Natalie held her breath, but soon after observed Big T fly to each chick and feed them, then fly off again. A flurry of activity ensued as the orphans practiced flying and landing as they tried to follow Big T around. At one point Natalie saw all 3 perched right on top of the roof of the house! Since that first night the three have been inseparable, Big T is feeding them, teaching them to hunt, how to pose to look like a stick, safe to say they have formally been adopted by Big T.

04.01.2022 Join EEV for a day of professional learning at the VCE Environmental Science Teachers Conference 2020 where we'll hear from professionals with expertise in all ...things soil! From the ancient nature of Australian soils to the use of microorganisms, you'll be fully immersed in this diverse topic. On the day we will hear from four experts including Associate Professor Vanessa Wong from Monash University. Associate Professor Vanessa Wong is a soil scientist in the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment at Monash University and Vice President of Soil Science Australia. Her research focuses on understanding how soil biogeochemical cycles are altered in natural and agricultural environments by land management activities and other processes such as sea level rise. She is passionate about teaching and communicating the importance of soil for society and why we should think more about the world beneath our feet. The morning sessions will be a mix of technical instruction and general interest and will be followed by an afternoon of workshopping the information into usable classroom content. The conference will be held on on Wednesday 16th of December, and tickets are $50 for EEV Members and $75 for Non-Members.
