11.01.2022 CABAH (JCU Node)/TARL Seminar Series Friday 21 August, 1:00pm-2:00pm (AEST), CNS, TSV and Zoom The rise and fall of a North Queensland mining town: The cultural landscape of Mungana and its associated mines... Owen Ray, James Cook University Abstract: The project will record and analyse the cultural landscape of the abandoned mining and railway town of Mungana and its precursor, Girofla, in Queensland’s dry tropics. The purpose is to research the layout of the town in relation to geography, water sources and transport, and what the remains show about the lifestyles of the residents and how that lifestyle responded to economic and social changes over the period of the town’s existence. It will examine choices of particular artefacts and artefact types, and building materials and styles. These findings will be compared with archaeological analyses of other Australian mining towns in the same period. Bio: Owen Ray is a PhD candidate at James Cook University. Owen completed his Honours (First Class) in Archaeology at JCU in 2017 studying the Zillmanton mine in north Queensland. Owen’s PhD research is focused on the cultural landscape of Mungana in north Queensland.
