14.01.2022 THIS SUNDAY 19th May, 3pm - The Consort of Melbourne presents 'Between worlds' featuring Bach's 'Jesu, meine Freude' and Chaconne in D Minor with violist Phoebe Green in Melbourne's best choral acoustic: Our Lady of Mt Carmel, 210 Richardson Street, Middle Park. Tickets $35 full/$25 Concession available here: https://www.trybooking.com/BCFXM Bach wrote 'Jesu, meine Freude' as a funeral motet, and in this programme it is heard alongside György Kurtags 'Signs, games and messag...es', many of which are written in memoriam or as a hommage to other composers. Also on the programme is Melbourne composer Wally Gunn's 'Arches and shadows' for viola and voice as well as the Australian premiere of Pulitzer-prize winner Caroline Shaw's 'Its motion keeps'. The finale of 'Between worlds' will be Bach's celebrated Chaconne in D minor. Originally for solo violin, German musicologist Helga Thoene theorised that the piece is based on a series of hidden chorale melodies as an epitaph to Bach's first wife, Maria Barbara. The Consort of Melbourne will perform these chorale melodies while violist Phoebe Green plays an excerpt from this incredible multi-layered piece. Book now to hear some of the secrets of Bach's masterpiece laid bare.
