15.01.2022 LET'S TALK TLC: with Teneille Angland 1. How important is it to you to give your horses some TLC? I am a huge believer in loving on horses in general. I honestly believe all of the horses Ive had over the years try so hard for me and have become successful because they know how much I love them! 2. What therapies do you use on your horses and why? ... I try to get Bruce Marsh to work on my horses whenever I cross his path; he is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the equine body. I recently purchased Back on Track boots and really love them! I also have an old Dick Wicks magnetic rug that Ive had for over 15 years and I still use when stabling overnight. Whenever Im near someone who does PEMF Therapy I try to get that done too, I like it because Ive had it done on myself and I believe it helps circulation and pain as it works on a cellular level. 3. What supplements/feeds do you use and why? I am a huge believer in SweetPro and EquiPride, my horses spend a lot of time in the paddock on grass and with the SweetPro I know theyre getting everything they need and they always look a million bucks. Im a long time feeder of Prydes EasiFeed, so leading into events I use their extruded grain feeds. And finally good quality lucerne is always a must! 4. Have you seen any therapies out there that you are yet to try but would love to? The one thing Id love to have access to is Cold Spa Therapy, its a treadmill in cold salt water. It looks like an awesome low impact way to keep an older competition horse fit. 5. If you were stuck on a desert island with just you and your horse what would be the one thing you would take to make sure he get's his TLC? Definitely great Lucerne and SweetPro.

15.01.2022 Mental game with Katina Elle Racheal Matthews (published March 2020) Often in the sport of barrel racing, when we think of strength being important in the industry our minds only jump to physical strength. However, the mental game arguably plays one of the most important roles in being successful in our sport. I sat down with past ABHA 1D Champion and 2 x ABCRA Australian Barrel Racing Champion, Katina Matthews and discussed her mental game in the sport and why it is key in b...eing successful. I definitely think mental strength is important in our sport, if you walk into the arena doubting yourself, chances are youre not going to have your best run. Barrel racing is a tough sport on your mental strength, its so easy to have a couple of bad runs in the past to change your level of positivity when entering the arena, next minute you are worrying and struggling and this can have an affect on your horse. I find that making sure, you do the hard work at home, and having a very short memory and only looking at the runs ahead really helps me mentally. I highly encourage everyone to get a game plan, set an achievable goal such as a clean run. This may sound silly but when Im walking into that arena, I tell myself over and over again that I can do this. We all have doubts but like anything in life its a habit so make it a healthy one. I have a routine when I struggle with confidence or not feeling mentally strong. I do slow work at home and adjust anything that is in need of it, I listen to fearless motivation podcasts, and go to the gym to release any stress. On the day of the event, Im usually pretty excited so I listen to my podcasts on the day, and listen to rock music before I run so Im pretty pumped by the time I walk my horse into that gate, I feel like this gets me really focused. Due to this routine, Ive almost eliminated my nerves, and now when I get butterflies instead of worrying, I tell myself Im excited to win. Whats your top two podcasts for motivation? 1. Fearless Motivation Feed your mind with success 2. Fearless Motivation Hungry for success Favourite rock songs to get you pumped? 1. Song 2 Blur 2. Mudshovel Staind 3. Born for Greatness Papa Roach

07.01.2022 Behind the Reins with the 2018 National Finals Patsie Holder Memorial Classic Winner Wendy Caban & Jay Lo Working (Published May 2019) Tell us about Jay Lo, the horse you won the 2018 Patsie Holder Memorial Classic Barrel Race on at the ABHA National Finals? Jay Lo is a funny horse she only like me can be all fire up one minute then walk on a loose rein the next minute. She tries her heart out every time she runs. Do you think the AELEC environment complements Jay Lo runn...ing & turning style? Well I think I ride her better there as I know the ground is going to hold her, she runs really hard and needs some ground underneath her. Do you have any specific goals or intentions for this years season? No. Im just doing a few rodeos and Im going to do the futurity on a couple of young horses I have. Do you have a preferred bloodline, running style, body type, or personality you prefer and look for in your barrel horses? Yes, I like a nice type with a big motor under them there have to want to try and be willing. Morn Deck is one of my favourite breeds and SLR Mojo Workin. What motivates & inspires you to keep going and stay positive through all the ups and downs of rodeo/barrel racing life? I have my best friend Tania Schiller who I will call for advice from time to time, she is my idol and the person I have always wanted to ride like but most of all I just love it when I ride my horses and I feel like have a purpose. It feels like this is what I am meant to be doing. What products and therapies do you depend on most to keep your horses healthy, happy, sound and competitive? I use a chiropractor, massage, and keep her on a clean diet. What piece of tack or equipment is one you cant live without? My snaffle bit. What do you think is the key to making the transition from a jackpot divisional barrel racing horse to an open barrel racing horse? It all depends on the horse at the time I feel like my horses tell me when they are ready and then I will see how they go with the big kids. Can you share one of the most memorable and/or funny moments from last years season? Jay Lo winning both rounds at Mt Isa and getting a big fat cheque $7234.00 for one rodeo was pretty impressive from my beautiful mare. If there was one theme, or one message that your barrel racing journey stands for or represents that is a positive message to others, what would it be? Be a good sport. What individuals or aspects of your support team have been absolutely crucial to your success? My husband Troy and my beautiful little girl Dekota are my support team.

06.01.2022 TRAINERS TOP TIPS: Pat Collins (published January 2020) The road to training a barrel racing horse, or any horse for that matter, as many know can be a rollercoaster, a very rewarding rollercoaster ride to be precise. We often come across numerous drills at clinics or by word of mouth, some of which we dont know what we did without. There are many top trainers in our industry, one of which we were able to glean a small insight into their training program and favourite drill,... and that is Pat Collins. Pat is often seen with a truckload of Classic horses at numerous ABHA events in Victoria and NSW every weekend, and was happy to let us know his top training drill, the Ian Francis Flower Pattern. This drill is certainly my favourite and most used exercise, it incorporates all barrel racing manoeuvres, without making your horse sour on the drums, said Pat. Executing the Flower Pattern You will need to ride in approximately a 75-foot circle, and therefore need that space in either an open paddock or arena; you could use a cone as a guide for the centre. To start, ride your horse through the centre of your circle and towards the outside edge, begin to frame your horse in the bridle as you move through the circle. Once you approach the outside edge, prepare for the turn by sitting down in the saddle and make a half circle to either the left or the right hand side, then double back through the centre of your circle and ride towards the opposite side of the circle. Repeat this seven or eight turns each way. The path of your horse will make a flower pattern. Members can also find an example of this pattern demonstrated on video by Deana Kirkpatrick here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wyba2ALuSAo

04.01.2022 TRAINERS TIPS: Trainers Tips with Vicki Schiller Rating Exercise (published in Australian Performance Horse Magazine May 2020) This is a great exercise for many disciplines and getting your horse to listen to you through body weight control. When you are barrel racing this exercise will allow your horse to rate coming into the drum when you sit back in the saddle.... Start off by trotting big circles in a large area, when I want to rate (slow down) I will sit, and if Im on a horse that is only young or is learning how to rate I will use my reins to slow my horse simultaneously to sitting down in the saddle. Your horse should slow for three strides, while youre at a sitting trot, and then move them out by rising to the trot again and speeding them up using your legs, then move to a different spot in the circle and repeat. The exercise is the same concept at a canter. If you are riding a young horse, you will need to go at a fast lope in the circle so they get used to the feel of your weight in the seat when asking them to rate. Once you have them used to slowing when you are seated, try putting them in a small circle once they rate, and then mix it up around the circle, just rating and then add a circle and so forth. Eventually your horse will slow, by just feeling your weight in the saddle rather than a pull on the reins, and will really benefit you in the barrel pattern. Give it a try!

04.01.2022 Behind the Reins with 2019 Patsie Holder Memorial Classic Champion Brittany McVicar & Full Throttle Ta Fame aka Epic (published in the Australian Performance Horse Magazine May 2020) Tell us about Epic, the horse you won the 2019 ABHA National Finals Patsie Holder Memorial Classic title on? Epic was born and raised on our family property. I won a free service at a roping to the sire Seconds ta Fame, kindly donated by the Matthews family. Nevielle McCarthy and Stephanie Ble...Continue reading
04.01.2022 Brittany McVicar & Full Throttle Ta Fame (Published August 2019) Young horses can be so rewarding and very humbling. Epic has quite an interesting story so we should start from there, she is a five year old mare sired by Seconds ta Fame and out of a Spinifex mare. I was lucky enough to win a service fee to Seconds ta Fame at a 10 head Breakaway Roping and didnt own a mare that I could use it for. However, thankfully Neville McCarthy and Stephanie Blewitt loaned me a mare,... Kelly who is by Spinifex. Epic was broken in by Scott and Lindee McNaughton, and then went to mum and dads who built further foundation son her whilst I was overseas. She is small for a barrel racing horse, only 14.1hh with her shoes on so I really didnt think shed be big enough to run drums, so I told mum to sell her whilst I was in America. Thankfully, the sale fell through and we kept her. I started her on the pattern only a year ago, and I could feel she was something special. She is extremely feely; quick footed and has a tonne of try and heart. She has a quirky personality and shares traits of a Dash ta Fame mare. With only a year on the pattern shes now clocking in the first division and picked up her first cheque at Coonamble rodeo and took out both rounds and the average at the Warwick Classic and won second in the 1D. Top training tip: A drill that I use a lot, which benefits my horses of all levels and myself, is doing the pattern all one direction. I will start on a barrel and in no particular order and go back and forth between barrels. I do it from a walk through to a gallop depending on what stage of training the horse is at. I can work on a number of different problems without my horse getting flustered about being on the actual pattern. I also recommend enjoying the training process and always remember to look back on your progress. Young horses can be so rewarding and very humbling.
