25.01.2022 Looking for design inspiration? Check out the Academy of British Cover Design’s 2020 shortlist!

23.01.2022 Victoria Hannan’s novel ‘Kokomo’ has a stunningly evocative cover, the result of a successful collaboration between book designer Alissa Dinallo, publisher Hachette Australia and Victoria herself. We asked Alissa to shed some light on the process and share earlier versions that led to the final cover (last out of the ones below) In two sentences, ‘Kokomo’ was described as the story about two generations of women trying to understand love. It’s about finding your way in a ...world that wants you to stay put. Robert, the publisher, and Victoria, the author, had a pretty strong idea of what they were after for the cover of this gorgeous novel. Something contemporary and photographic with bold, clean typography. They also had a good idea of the type of photography they wanted too, and gave me a few images to work with and photographers to have a look at. With a clear direction, I really wanted to try and capture a sense of the modern woman, and the realities of life and love. Something I think ‘Kokomo’ as a novel absolutely embodies. I really enjoyed exploring this aesthetic. After a few meetings and tweaks, we landed on our final cover, with photography by Chantal Convertini. Which I love. Just perfect for this novel. We at ABDA certainly agree, and we suspect we’re not alone! ‘Kokomo’ by Victoria Hannan was published by Hachette Australia Books in July 2020. Hachette Australia was a sponsor of the 2020 ABDA Book Design Awards and ABDA is proud to feature their work in our Sponsor Series. #ABDAAwards2020 #ABDA2020Awards #BookDesignAwards #BookDesign #AustralianBookDesign #AustralianBookDesignersAssociation #ABDA

21.01.2022 Black Inc.’s latest blog post offers a fascinating glimpse into Regine Abos’ book design process, along with a beautifully fitting quote from Jhumpa Lahiri: ‘The right cover is like a beautiful coat, elegant and warm, wrapping my words as they travel through the world, on their way to keep an appointment with my readers. The wrong cover is cumbersome, suffocating. Or it is like a too-tight sweater: inadequate. A good cover is flattering. I feel myself listened to, understood. A bad cover is like an enemy; I find it hateful.’ We think ’Factory 19’ has found itself a very comfy outfit indeed!

21.01.2022 "Designers Against Coronavirus was first launched as a digital archive and Instagram account back in March 2020 by Milan-based brand design studio Carosello Lab. 10.01.2022 In need of some bibliotherapy? Want to know what it is first? Put simply, the word ‘bibliotherapy’ is derived from the Greek words for book, ‘biblio’ and healing, ‘therapeia’. So, basically: book therapy. Bibliotherapy with State Library Victoria is a free, facilitated self-reflective approach, using stories and poems read aloud over a series of podcasts, to give everyone access to literature’s healing power.
