She spoke at the National Press Club of the devastating escalation of domestic and family violence during the pandemic particularly during lockdowns. She wants the government and public to act to stop the "slaughter in the suburbs". "The statistics she reeled off about that violences escalation during the COVID-19 lockdowns were devastating. A 600 per cent increase in reports of... revenge porn just on the Easter weekend. Nearly one in 20 women were assaulted sexually or physically by a current or former partner between March and May two-thirds of them for the first time. A two-thirds jump in demand for emergency accommodation in South Australia. A 130 per cent rise in new family violence matters in Canberra.," "There has been more violence in more Australian homes. The severity of violence has increased and COVID is actually being weaponised within the home as a tool of abuse. How could we not be haunted by this violence, Australia?" 22.01.2022 Its National Reconciliation Week and this years theme In this Together. As part of NRW 2020, Reconciliation Australia are asking everyone to take to social media to acknowledge Country. We cant be physically together to show respect but we can show respect to Country where we are. Take the time to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Land that you are on, wherever you are. Consult the AIATSIS Map of Indigenous Australia for a guide to the Traditional Owners of the Lan...d you are on https://aiatsis.gov.au//a/aiatsis-map-indigenous-australia The vision of Reconciliation Australia is based on 5 interrelated dimensions: "historical acceptance; race relations; equality & equity; institutional integrity & unity" Underlying this is Respect for Indigenous Australians and the need for structural changes to enable these dimensions. What is Reconciliation? Reconciliation Australia states: "For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Australias colonial history is characterised by devastating land dispossession, violence, and racism. Over the last half-century, however, many significant steps towards reconciliation have been taken. Reconciliation is an ongoing journey that reminds us that while generations of Australians have fought hard for meaningful change, future gains are likely to take just as much, if not more, effort. In a just, equitable and reconciled Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children will have the same life chances and choices as non-Indigenous children, and the length and quality of a persons life will not be determined by their racial background. Our vision of reconciliation is based and measured on five dimensions: historical acceptance; race relations; equality and equity; institutional integrity and unity. These five dimensions do not exist in isolation, but are interrelated. Reconciliation cannot be seen as a single issue or agenda; the contemporary definition of reconciliation must weave all of these threads together. For example, greater historical acceptance of the wrongs done to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples can lead to improved race relations, which in turn leads to greater equality and equity." https://www.reconciliation.org.au/national-reconciliation-/

21.01.2022 Watch New York Congressmember Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezs full address from the floor of the House when she excoriated her Republican colleague, Congressmember Ted Yoho of Florida, after he verbally attacked her earlier in the week on the steps of the Capitol and used a sexist slur overheard by a reporter, calling her a fucking bitch, then issued a non-apology from the House floor. Ocasio-Cortezs remarks on Thursday, widely shared online, amounted to a stunning indictment ...not only of the words of Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Florida, but a culture of abusive language against women that can lead to violence. Her speech resonated with many women in politics and out, supportive of her politics or not who said the language had been tacitly accepted for far too long. Ocasio-Cortezs response came after Yoho offered a non-apology from the House floor on Wednesday saying, I cannot apologize for my passion, and never naming Ocasio-Cortez directly. https://www.democracynow.org//7//aoc_ted_yoho_full_speech

19.01.2022 Australias existing climate policy continues to remain inadequate. ABC TVs Four Corners episode on 18 May 2020, Climate Wars: How brutal politics derailed climate policy in Australia highlights how Australian political parties on all sides of the spectrum have failed to meaningfully tackle climate change. Yesterday a review chaired by energy industry executive Grant King into new low-cost sources of emissions reduction was released. ... In response, Frank Jotzo, Director of the Centre for Climate and Energy Policy at the Australian National University explains that changes to Australias emissions reduction policies may do little more than channel taxpayer money to industry. He adds, "to create real demand for emissions credits... emissions baselines would have to be drastically lowered and no more exemptions granted." "At least for now, we will probably only see a government-funded carrot given to some, and no stick. Government handouts to individual companies will continue to be the measure of Australias climate policy." Mahuta previously worked as minister for Mori Development and Local Government, according to NPR, and has worked in politics for about 25 years. She is one of 16 Mori ministers in New Zealand's cabinet. Mahuta will be part of one of the most diverse parliaments under Ardern, after her landslide win in last mon...th’s general election. New Zealand's government has made a marked change by bringing in younger members of parliament. Ardern herself was the youngest female head of state in the world after winning the 2017 election at 37. PM Ardern: I think it’s an important point to make these are individuals who have been promoted for what they bring to the cabinet, they also reflect the New Zealand that elected them. I think as a country we should be proud of this. 18.01.2022 Class action to stop planned coal mine extension filed by climate action-focused Australian teenagers is a first for Australia. 8 youth are involved including Avav Princi, Izzy Raj-Seppings, Veronica Hester, Laura Kirwan and Ambrose Hayes. Rather than making the claim under environmental law, the class action claims the Federal Minister, Sussan Ley, has a common law duty of care for young people and cannot approve actions that will make climate change worse. The class action ...argues that by digging up and burning coal, climate change will be made worse and that will harm them in the future. An expert says it could break new legal ground with widespread ramifications, causing problems for any new coal mine in Australia and possibly any fossil fuel project, if it is successful. The mine at the centre of the case is Whitehavens proposed extension to the Vickery Coal Mine north of Gunnedah in NSW. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.abc.net.au/article/12640596

10.01.2022 'Many are called, few are chosen' An analysis of ASX 300 boards from 2005-20 by Ownership Matters Ownership Matters (OM) analysed the pool of 1777 executives and 4143 non-executives who have served on ASX 300 company boards from 2005 to the present day. "The ASX 300 director pool has increased since 2011 as a consequence of companies appointing more women. However with more than one in three appointments made from within the existing group of ASX 300 directors, it is clear th...at experience counts. Over the last three years the pool of women who are selected as first-time candidates to be ASX 300 directors is not growing at the same rate as the opportunity for women to be ASX 300 directors. Men still dominate the cohort of NEDs who enjoy more than 10 years service at the same company and who have a workload (adjusting for the responsibility of the Chairperson) of four or more seats. Only 22 women are currently chairpersons of ASX 300 companies and during the period of the study only 48 attained that position. It is clear that some board candidates have an advantage on the basis that they are ‘known’ through other directors or ‘known quantities’ on the basis of their service on other ASX 300 companies...Our analysis presents evidence that NED tenure is lengthy and that board turnover in the last 15 years is largely independent of company performance. If a high performance culture does not exist in the board, investors should ask how one can prosper within the company’s workforce? "How do you break in?...you need more than...a fancy qualification. What you need are connections. And the best connections come from within." writes Ian Verrender in his analysis of the Report available at https://www.ownershipmatters.com.au//category/downloadabl/ Ian Verrender's article 'Company director is the one job where pay and performance don't matter': https://www.abc.net.au//company-directors-study-p/12811810

07.01.2022 The number of women running Fortune 500 companies hits a new high However, a lot more work is needed. Even with a record high of 37 female CEOs, women make up just 7.4% of the leaders on the Fortune 500 list. There are also just three women of color on the list. Furthermore, against the unprecedented economic and health crisis we face in this moment, as Lorraine Hariton, president and CEO of Catalyst observes, women are losing their jobs faster than men and managing to a gre...ater extent than before, childcare and household responsibilities. In the U.S. data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that women are disproportionately feeling the brunt of these losses. In April 2020 alone, women accounted for 55% of the 20.5 million jobs lost. In leisure, hospitality, education, health care and retail, women are the ones who are falling victim to the first massive waves of this economic crisis. Women are disproportionately employed in the lowest paid jobs in the U.S. economy. urrently, there are more than 23 million workers in the low-wage workforce, with women making up roughly 67% of this population, reports the National Womens Law Center (NWLC). These jobs, by NWLC definition, pay $11 per hour or less. Emily Martin, VP for education and workplace justice at NWLC, advises employers to take a close look at who is being laid off at their company and who is being brought back, making sure that equity is part of the frame they are using to make these decisions. Lorraine Hariton emphaises that in a post Covid19 workplace, "with more women CEOs in the Fortune 500, we need to be proactive to create more equitable, inclusive and fulfilling opportunities and workplaces for everyone...This includes, she adds, having a post-Covid-19 workplace where leaders are "intentionally [doubling] down on supporting women at every level to continue to advance women in the workplace." https://www.cnbc.com//the-number-of-women-running-fortune- https://www.cnbc.com//coronavirus-job-losses-disproportion

06.01.2022 World Press Freedom Day is celebrated annually on 3 May. This year, during an online Dialogue on Press Freedom and Tackling Disinformation in the COVID-19 context. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay set the tone of the debate as she welcomed participants saying, It is particularly important to mark World Press Freedom Day this year during the global COVID-19 pandemic and to keep press freedom on the agenda in the present situation. It takes journalism to communicate the ...findings of scientists and disseminate real and reliable information and counter fake news that is dangerous to peoples lives and to efforts to contain the spread of the pandemic. Unfortunately, Ms Azoulay added, in all too many places this is not the case and journalists, particularly female journalists, are prevented from doing their work. The Director-General went on to call on governments, major corporations that also have a role to play in the dissemination of information in todays world, and on members of the public to promote freedom of the press and counter fake news. Highlighting the gravity of the issue at stake, Secretary-General Guterres quoted UNESCOs tally of 57 journalists who were killed around the world last year. Along with the new challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic we are seeing a dangerous outbreak of misinformation, from harmful health advice to wild conspiracy theories. The antidote lies in verified, scientific, fact-based news and analysis. It lies in media freedom and independent reporting. It lies, as UNESCO rightly says, in journalism without fear of favour. This is much more than a slogan, it is a matter of life and death. https://en.unesco.org//media-freedom-and-independence-time

03.01.2022 The U.S appears to be on track for roughly 160 million total votes cast, which means a turnout rate of 67%, according to University of Florida Professor, Michael McDonald who compiles data from across the nation. Last time the turnout was more than 65% was 1908 according to the U.S. Elections Project. The stakes for the 2020 U.S. election are high for everyone, but particularly for Black women. They have been hit disproportionately hard by the coronavirus pandemic, both in ca...ses of COVID-19 and in jobs lost and financial hardship. In the November 2018 election, women continued to vote at higher rates than men, just as they have in every midterm election since 1998. In the 2018 midterm election, 55% of eligible Black women voters cast ballots, 6% above the national turnout, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. A record number of women were elected to the House of Representatives in the November 2018 election. This election a record number of Black women are running for Congress.
