23.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will Be. It’s National NAIDOC week (@naidocweek) and ACP recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our upcoming exhibition ‘Truth in Fire’ featuring work by Amanda Jane Reynolds and Tim Georgeson, reflects on the catastrophic bush fires of 2019-20. Drawing on the knowledge and experiences of Yuin Elders and other members of the community, the exhibition explores traditional fire techniques, as well as... presenting the sacred and practical role fire can play in managing the environment. In the aftermath of last summer’s devastating fires in Australia, there is an urgency for communities to adapt and negotiate extremes in human-created climate change. This exhibition recognises the significance of First Nations knowledge and practices as the foundation of living in greater balance within Country by managing ecologies and resources for the continuity of life. #alwayswasalwayswillbe Image: Tim Georgeson @timgeorgeson, Still from Pyrogenesis, from the Truth in Fire series, 2020. 13.01.2022 ACP alumni Shawn Hollbach has spent the past few years building his darkroom practice to create some truly phenomenal work. Many of our students have achieved incredible feats since taking their first steps at ACP, and it's been such a joy and privilege to watch their photographic practices develop and their craft flourish over the years. Shawn says: My darkroom practice started at the ACP. After learning the foundations of photography through the ACP’s Camera Craft courses,... I enrolled in a film processing course taught by Michael Waite. I was lucky to find such a gifted teacher with a vast knowledge of film and darkroom practices. From Michael I learned the importance of patience and good process, and well as a respect for darkroom materials (including not wasting paper). My visits to the ACP darkroom quickly became the highlight of my week, and I repeated some of Michael’s courses a number of times. Film photography offered an escape from being online, and has enabled me to develop more discipline and mindfulness in the way I make images. I love the simplicity of mechanical cameras and the sense of anticipation that comes from developing film and exposing silver gelatin paper in the darkroom. I also enjoy working in a medium that is physical and tangible, and being able to hand craft a photograph from the initial exposure of the film through to manipulating light on the paper, and toning and washing the final print. Being in the darkroom also gives me a sense of connection to the history of photography and the great photographers I admire most. Since the pandemic, I have continued darkroom printing at home, and am working towards expanding into alternative printing processes such as platinum palladium. There is a world of things to learn and I am only just starting to understand the possibilities of analogue print making." Thank you to Shawn for sharing your work with us
