25.01.2022 Here at Inter-fish we see community engagement and awareness as an important and valuable component to the future of the Great Barrier Reef. It was great to have Kepnock High school come through our facility last week.

24.01.2022 This video is the scientific viewpoint on how Coral Reefs do recover from mass bleaching events over time

23.01.2022 Here at Interfish Bundaberg we are closely following Jamie Craggs efforts in captive coral spawning research to begin our own spawning program. We have more ground to cover with our captive spawning systems, however recently, we were lucky enough to have some newly collected torch (Euphyllia glabrescens) colonies spawn in our system. To aid our learning we collected what larvae we could and attempted to settle them...here are some development and progress photos of our efforts

23.01.2022 Some of the Nudibranchs we have found eating our coral in 2018. Whilst not all Nudibranchs are coral specific feeders- (some prefer Jellyfish or sponges). Coral eating Nudibranchs are very destructive to coral as you can see from the photos. The brown Nudibranch seem to be specific to Duncanopsammia, and we have not found them on any other corals. They imitate the polyp, and this makes them difficult to spot.... We have only found the vivid red Nudibranchs on Dendrophyllia and Tubastraea. Both of these Nudibranchs are Aeolids, some of which are able to incorporate the stinging cells of corals into their own bodies as a defence mechanism. Pretty cool hey? See more

19.01.2022 At Oceanfest 2019 we had the privilege of displaying a small piece of the Great Barrier Reef and promoting the marine aquarium industry. While Oceanfest is primarily a festival showcasing the areas seafood, tourism and local businesses, more and more interest is being shown in environmental issues that affect the Great Barrier Reef and local marine areas. Our display was set up in the The Reef Room where local experts discussed our amazing animals, the risks they face, and what the average person could do to help.

16.01.2022 What exactly is coral? The answer might surprise you.

16.01.2022 Very interesting watch! We believe that this is a realistic and balanced view of what is happening on the GBR

12.01.2022 We are pleased to announce that our new SPS dominant holding system is achieving desirable results. Now that we have an Alkatronic installed we are maintaining brilliantly stable dKH. Thanks to Eric Tang, David Burnett and ABS technologies for getting us this awesome piece of kit. #focustronic #Alkatronic #SPS

08.01.2022 On the 6th Of December 2018, we had the pleasure of having the Bundaberg Rotary Organisation come have a look through our facility. Australian Rotary Clubs are part of an international network of business, professional and community leaders who strive to make the world a better place through practical efforts. Through Rotary International, the reward of "paying it forward" unites men and women from different backgrounds, cultures, religious and political beliefs the world over, allowing ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

05.01.2022 Last week we had the pleasure of having the wonderful ladies from Legacy come and view our facility. Everyone had a great time and we were very busy answering all their questions. Legacy is an Australian organisation, established by ex-servicemen with the aim of caring for the dependents of deceased Australian service men and women.

04.01.2022 We have made some new additions to the video page on our website. For anyone new to the page please also take this as an opportunity to have a look through our official website and have a read about how we operate and what industry initiatives we are involved in. There are also a lot of pretty pictures :)

04.01.2022 This is a very informative Q&A on coral bleaching by the Dr. Russell Reichelt, the chairman of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park

01.01.2022 Bad weather mostly caused by tropical cyclone Penny has made life difficult by preventing us from collecting since the beginning of the new year. Some good news that has come out of it though is Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has reported: "Tropical cyclone Penny peaked as a Category 2 system in the Coral Sea on 3 January 2019 before downgrading to a tropical low and turning back towards the Queensland coast. The system entered the Marine Park and crossed the coast ...around the Bowen region on 9 January 2019. Heavy rainfall (and associated cloud cover) affected parts of Eastern and Central Queensland. This helped to cool sea surface temperatures over most of the Marine Park down to average or slightly below average and decreased the current risk of coral bleaching across much of the Reef. As a result, much of the Marine Park is currently no longer on bleaching watch, apart from the Far Northern management area (above Princess Charlotte Bay). While this cooling effect has provided relief in many areas in the Marine Park, a close watch for bleaching and other impacts will be maintained. Heat waves across Queensland during December 2018 saw a rapid accumulation of thermal stress in sea surface temperatures. As a result corals in some parts of the Reef, particularly in the Northern and Far Northern regions, may still be experiencing the impacts of that heat stress, despite the recent short period of relief from above average temperatures. Regional and local weather conditions over the remainder of summer continue to be critical in determining the outcome for the Reef this season."
