06.01.2022 VALE Colleen Trenwith It is with sadness that we share the news of the passing of Colleen Trenwith, the incredibly gifted fiddle player in the Hamilton County Bluegrass Band, and later a much loved and acclaimed teacher and instructor in Bluegrass, Old Time, Country Music Studies and Appalachian Studies at the East Tennessee State University. Colleen had only recently retired from the ETSU and returned to her homeland of New Zealand to spend more time with her family. She pa...ssed away on 24 January 2021 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer, aged 74. In 1966 Colleen (nee Bain) joined the Hamilton County Bluegrass Band and then very quickly became the focal point, and they gained much praise after regular appearances on the NZBC music show The Country Touch in 1968. She married the group’s banjo player Paul Trenwith in 1970 and a year later band moved to Australia to join the iconic Slim Dusty show's Travelling Country Band. It is Colleen’s brilliant fiddle playing that you hear in the original recording of Slim’s Lights On The Hill, released in 1972. The HCBB released their vinyl album Kersbrook Cottage in 1972, which was a huge influence on bluegrass musicians across both sides of the Tasman. The band broke up in 1974 but there were several reunions from the late 1990s onwards, often involving the Trenwiths' sons, their wives and Colleen and Paul’s grandchildren. The Hamilton County Bluegrass Band were the winners of the very first Instrumental of the Year in the inaugural Golden Guitar Awards in 1973 for their recording Ring A Ding, followed by a second Golden Guitar award in 1974 for EP of the Year with Live At Tamworth, and then a third Golden Guitar in 1976 for Instrumental of the Year with her husband Paul for their recording of Orange Blossom Special. Our thoughts are with Paul, their children, and grandchildren at this incredibly sad time.
