25.01.2022 You would expect numbers to be important to someone with more than 30 years experience in the finance industry, but when it comes to hunting, David McNabb isnt so worried about the count at the end of the trip, hes hooked on the experience.
25.01.2022 An early morning pre-season scouting trip before work provided a very brief view of a mob of velvet antlered bucks. There were eight in total with two good ones in the group. Both the big ones were red in colour. One was very even with lengthy, straight antlers and long palms, an animal which potentially would rub out to reveal a 240DS-plus trophy, but it was the other buck my binoculars focused on. This one also had long antlers. One curled in, and the other went straight up. The straight side had an impressive guard tine clearly visible through the Zeiss 15x binoculars from 600 metres away. Very uneven and non-typical. Just how I like them. Don't miss the rest of Stephen Kirkman's feature trophy yarn: bit.ly/32wXiJG

22.01.2022 Its been said time and time again, the dialogue around ethical hunting and conservation needs to be based around science and education, not emotion. No-one understands this better than Tasmania-based Senior Wildlife Management officer Ellen Freeman.
20.01.2022 2020 has been a year unlike any other. A year I thought was going to be full of hunting turned into a year of wondering when we’ll be able to cross the border again.

17.01.2022 Its been a couple of weeks since the lifting of what was considered the corona-cough essential travel only edict, and with that my daughter who lives hours away announced she wanted to come home for a visit and of course she also asked if there was any venison in the freezer for her.

16.01.2022 A great yarn by Richard Timms in the latest Australian Deer. This would probably be my last hunt for a fair while as my knee replacement operation is only a few weeks away. I was tossing up; either a sambar or a fallow deer hunt. In the end I opted for a fallow hunt as it would not be so hard on the knee. Leaving home in the darkness on Father’s Day morning it was clear at home and a very brisk 1C with a frost. It was a 45-minute drive to the property, and I ran into heavy fog with only 15 km to go. I was thinking I would have to climb high to get above the fog and possibly spook the deer but we’d give it a crack.
14.01.2022 Don't miss ADA's latest review on Dog & Gun Coffee. Dog & Gun Coffee entered the market last year with an innovative drip filter coffee for backpackers and travellers. Its a really nice concept fourteen grams of real café quality coffee, sealed for freshness in a package that can easily be carried in the field.

11.01.2022 It was 18 months ago but feels like yesterday when, on the back end of a winter sika hunt, Troy vowed to me that we would be coming back to find a trophy fallow buck to add to his growing collection.
10.01.2022 Every hunter in Victoria (and a lot outside of the state) know of the Game Management Authority Victoria. When asked what it does, many reply with ‘they regulate hunting’. This is true, but often the detail in how the department does so is unknown. The Australian Deer Association has decided to pull the curtains back on the inner workings of the GMA to learn more about the intelligence capabilities of the department. After sending a list of questions about the details behind the department’s intelligence capacity, the GMA responded with the following...

09.01.2022 Seizing an opportunity to work more effectively for deer during a challenging period in wildlife conservation, the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) and the National Deer Alliance (NDA) revealed on Tuesday a joint venture that unifies their two organisations into what will soon become a new super-group in deer conservation.
08.01.2022 Thirty years ago if you sat down at a campfire and had someone tell you what the deer scene would be like today you would have commented: Maaaate, what are you putting in those rollies you are smoking. The deer scene now is nothing like it was back then.
07.01.2022 What did you think of the 50th spread in the December 2019 edition? Here's a sneak peak of the young guns page. Keep an eye out for more to come.
06.01.2022 When I said to Dad last year that the 2020 hunting season was going to be one to remember, I had no idea just how right I was.
05.01.2022 Recently I had a look at research in the United States on the drivers and motivations behind hunting. The research indicated that there are a number of distinct stages of hunter development. One such stage is described as the experienced or sporting stage.
05.01.2022 Catch Les Kowitz's feature - A call to Poland here.
05.01.2022 Red stags roaring brings out the hunter in me. There is nothing more surreal than sitting high on a mountain ridge watching several stags challenging each other in the thick bush on a foggy morning.

03.01.2022 Tim Koschade takes a look at what happens after the shot. The boom is still resounding through the forest, but quite likely you can still hear the thump of your heart as the recoil subsides and you briefly catch sight of your deer before it vanishes into the scrub.

02.01.2022 As Rinella explains in the opening chapter, Meat Eater is not a how-to book. It is a book that attempts to answer the questions why I hunt, who I am as a hunter, and what hunting means to me.
02.01.2022 An excellent piece by ex-young guns author Michaela Shirley, and the latest installment to Hunting with Mic. Interested in reading more from Michaela? Make sure you keep an eye out for the latest Australian Deer Magazine.
02.01.2022 Robert Butterworth takes the time to walk readers through a favoured dish of his.
01.01.2022 It was a long, hard rut this year on the South Coast rusa. Every opportunity I could get I was on my blocks trying to figure them out, to the point where I think the owners got a little sick of me messaging them. But their desire to get deer off their property kept them saying yes.
01.01.2022 Over the years my friends and I have been deer hunting we have managed to solve all the problems of the deer hunting world while sitting around the camp fire.
